Rick’s Targets

You think Slazinski can play center? He’s a stretch 4 with legit perimeter skills. He brings the ball up and runs secondary transition. He can actually handle. I think this is the craziest take you’ve had!
I think it is much more likely he is the biggest kid on the court for a stretch then playing alongside two guys less prepared to guard the 3.

If we got Ware, you think we would see Soriano, Ware, Quinn at the 5/4/3? What other big combo could we have that would ever put him there with the other options on the wing and guard we will have?

Not a blind faith guy, but it appears Rick is putting together a deep, competent team that will compete in tough BE out of the gate in year one and position itself quite well going forward.

Crazy to worry about why he chose some guys early in process and whether they stay or not. Competition in practice will determine minutes and if there is fallout going into next season, so be it. Pitino knows the clock is ticking and is aggressively working to get the program Dance worthy next season and very successful in it year 2. That is laudatory, not pie in sky and highly unusual at SJU for a long time.

A HOF HC dropped in our laps, enjoy the ride. I still fear a world ending meteor with all the positive vibes I feel.

Agree and frankly believe if, and it's a big if, we were fortunate enough to get Dingle, Luis & Ware with our last three scholarships, we'd likely be picked in top 5 in Big East pre-season Coaches poll. Other coaches certainly know the difference Pitino makes.

What a kid did at a mid major is a better measuring stick then what a kid did in high school(with some rare exceptions), JC or anywhere else. In fact it's the closest measuring stick to a high major. Also, this will not be an all-mid major team. Soriano, Alleyne, Taylor, etc are not mid-majors. Dunlap was a high major recruit. And we still have 3 slots to fill.

Anyhow, not knocking you for voicing your opinion, and I'm the last person to have blind faith in a coach, but between Rick and the staff, they know way more about these kids then any of us. So, I'll continue to trust that they are getting the best kids they can based on the NIL money we have, and I'll wait till the season starts to judge.
Very fair post. And I have no problem having basketball discussions. I am not the one getting mad on here. When people go at me I usually respond with jokes.

Since the days of Norm people on this site pick a side and wrap their hands around that side like death and won’t let go. It is a basketball site and yes I am questioning what the coach is doing. I know he is a great coach never questioned that, I am not even saying this won’t work, literally just saying I don’t think it is a given that roster as constituted makes the tournament. And I was raised on Louie so making the tournament is enough for me, anything else is gravy.

Legit question. I know everyone has lives and levels of attention come and go. But you were silent for pretty much the entire Anderson tenure on here. But since Pitino you’re back and with a vengeance. What’s the story.

I don't think he does that EJ, and I would be disappointed if he does.
Yeah, Pitino spoke a lot about culture and singled out Traore. What kind of message would that send if he started rescinding schollies at the last minute to upgrade talent?

In any event, let’s get Luis, Dingle and Ware before we start lamenting about not having enough spots. Neither are sure things.

Can’t we cap Larry Wright’s posts at like 20 per day. Seeing his name is like getting a rain delay with three outs left in a ball game.

Don’t know who you are but can honestly say the fact that you took time out your day to post this makes me feel really really really sad for you. I mean isn’t there anything else you could have done with that time?

Think the biggest take-away are what guys like Quinn and Dunlap spoke about in their statements following their commitments. Pitino doesn't 'make promises' when it comes to minutes/roles/etc... It's re-assuring to know that we have kids coming in with that intangible mindset of 'eat what i kill'

the guys we will see out there will be the guys that earned it.

I'm not trying to be a sh*t stirrer but I was thinking the same thing DK...if we get Dingle & Luis, does Coach have a discussion with Drissa or Keita, knowing Ware & possibly MM are coming or within our grasp. It's a tough call.
I doubt we will get both MM and Ware. Think it will be one or the other (if either pops for St. John’s).

Again took him a year and everybody hated him the year before.
Btw and I am sure Mase jr can pull this up I blamed Anderson for his struggles but most on here hated him.
But what does the amount of time it took for him to develop into a top player in the conference matter? It happened. And your argument is against players coming from that level. He's the proof against it. Along with Souley Boum and a billion other examples from last year.

I understand the genesis of your point. You want high major talent, but we've seen that can come from anywhere these days

All the great coaches preach competition and they don’t make promises. They don’t have too it’s the coaches living on a wing and a prayer that make promises (like a lot of posters on here that are always concerned about playing time-it’s simple the best play and if others leave don’t worry they won’t be missed).

"Kante has a physically imposing frame with good size, broad shoulders, a strong body, and reported 7-foot-4 wingspan. He can be a dominant rebounder and active shot-blocker. He rim-runs well, is just starting to utilize his big body to seal for easy buckets inside, and has made a lot of progress with his hands and reactions in quick catch-and-finish situations. Kante also has good touch and footwork, but becomes less efficient when trying too hard to prove his face-up skill set. He has become a consistent free-throw shooter and isn’t incapable of knocking down an occasional open rhythm three, but too often picks-and-pops instead of rolling hard to the rim, settles for tough-twos in the mid-post area, or stops the ball with too many fakes and pivots trying to create his own shot. Defensively, he’s physical in the post and fairly mobile hedging ball-screens for a player his size, albeit a true center and not overly switchable. Overall, he has good size, measurables, a college ready body, and is an asset on the glass and defensive end. His offense continues to develop, but will likely need to be simplified at the next level."

Kante would also really intrigue me instead of Ware, if he's willing to be a backup at the 4/5 and grow into the role next year. The description sounds like he fits the Pitino mold.

At minimum, it would be great to get a visit in so he's familiar with us in future recruiting cycles.
