Rick’s Targets

At the risk of being despised, what makes anybody think we have a chance with either of those kids? I mean why would Dingle choose us over Indiana or Kentucky? Makes no sense.

Why would Mgbako choose us over Kansas? We are not winning recruiting battles over mediocre schools. Now we’re suddenly going to beat out the likes of Kansas and Kentucky? It’s nice to dream but those of you who are getting excited about this are setting yourselves up for disappointment. It’s not happening.

In fact, I’m so sure it’s not happening that if it does, other than a single post to express my happiness/congratulations and admit that I was wrong , I won’t post on this site again until the season starts.
Actually, you should do two things if you're wrong here: Post that you're ecstatic AND admit you were wrong; and then tape that half-empty glass you look into and at least stop it from leaking.

Again with that pessimism, er, I mean realism? 😆 😆

Both those teams have stacked rosters. There’s more guaranteed playing time here. Plus you get Pitino.

There's only one reason elite kids would come here, and that's why SJU made him their coach:
RICK PITINO! Kids know what he has done.

Nice reverse psychology there Boo!

Because of your last sentence, contributions to Storm Marketing are set to break NIL records.

Maybe more that the facilities stink, then they go to top p6 schools and see state of the art facilities.

Then again if you're a top elite baller and you'll be one and done, then that shouldn't really matter.
Not maybe.
If Rick can’t get the kids here Robin Williams can come in and hug Pitino and tell him it’s not his fault over and over again. Because it won’t be his fault!
My worry is not sure anyone can consistently recruit here.

But let’s look at this realistically.
Dwight Gooden had no idea who Ralph Kiner was. Reporters had to tell Derrick Coleman that Willis Reed was a HOF basketball player.
Pitino was at Iona for 3 years and in Greece or somewhere before that. He now coaches at a school that has been relevant 3 times in the last 38 years. Kids probably don’t view him with same reverence that those on here do.

If we don’t get great players we will be fine, just not as fine as some of you seem to believe.

Then again, Steve Lavin was out of coaching for awhile, not well known on the east coast, and did really well from the get go.

Of course that was before NIL changed everything.

First off that is a decent argument.
But let’s take a deep dive into it.

Though a far inferior coach, Lavin was still visible doing the games on TV. Pitino basically had to go into exile for everything to blow over.

Lavin also had the one monster class and Jordan. Otherwise the recruiting was uneven as I recall.

Lastly my understanding was that helped obviously by being at UCLA Lavin was always a recruiter. Pitino I don’t remember having the classes that Duke, UNC, Kansas and Kentucky after he left were getting. He got good players that fit what he wanted to do.

Look I am not saying he definitely can’t recruit here eventually. Just saying it will not be easy and he MAY NOT be able to. And AGAIN that is not a knock on Pitino but a realistic view of ST John’s basketball.
My only criticism of Pitino was not trying to keep 2 or 3 specifically Storr from last season roster. But now not even sure he had full say in those decisions. As of now in any way you choose to quantify it the roster is worse.

Bottom line is if given the choice I would want Rick with a mediocre roster over almost any other coach with a better roster.

Every single one of your posts has a praise for Pitino followed immediately by a criticism and ending with a praise. You’re pretty predictable.

And to say the roster is worse is totally inaccurate as the roster is not yet complete. And even with this incomplete roster, I would argue it is better than last year’s roster.
