Rick’s Targets

Boosters always paid players before NIL without any ROI. They will continue to do so now that it’s legal. That’s all there really is to it. The minute this benefits SJU no one will have an issue with it. Pitino seems to have gotten the top booster for SJU on board so it looks to be moving in the right direction. Everyone on here is old enough to know that money makes the world go round. A lot of these guys don’t come from money like that so 10k/20k is a pay day for them.
I'm sure in a couple years the market will be set and everyone will know everything, until then we can have fun speculating. I tend to think the majority of players are that are in Division 1 are in the 10k - 20k range from a collective. This article suggests $75k for high major starter, but that come from NIL brokers so they are going to push the value bit. Either way it's an interesting read.

$75k for high major starter is nowhere near what these kids have been going for. Timberlake can buy a house in his hometown with the money he commanded.

I'm sure after a few cycles the market will stabilize and we will know more in regards to actual financial deals. If Timberlake made enough to buy a house in Braintree MA this cycle, I'd venture to guess his 600k+ deal is in the top 5% of all NIL.

$10K/$20K pay day ?

I am not sure you appreciate how much N$L money is being paid to these kids this off season.

The UCLA N$L is reported to be paying each of the 13 scholarship players on its mens roster a minimum of $100,000 per year. One ACC team reportedly paid each player a minimum of $60K this past season. One ACC starter last year recently transferred and received $625,000. One UMiami starter this year was reported to have received $800,000 to transfer to Miami, and so on, and so on.

If N$L was only $10K/$20K payouts then Pitino would likely already have a full roster. My understand that Pitino is competing in the N$L sweepstakes with an underfunded account. No angel (a/k/a “Mr. Green”) has yet arrived with a big check.

The N$L payments have spiked this season. Hey, the salaries of D1 coaches have spiked, so don’t begrudge the athletes for taking what is available.
With all due respect, using extreme examples from the top 40 or so wealthy NIL collectives does not make it "S.O.P." for the other 300 D1 colleges.

That is why I said that the top 25 basketball powers with high value television exposure will always get the top players. The NIL scam is just another way to influence the decision of elite athletes to attend their university.

If you think that the over 1500 basketball players that have entered the portal are going to be getting anywhere near $50-$100,009 per year then you should expect all 4,758 D1 basketball players from all 366 D1 schools to enter the portal in 2024 for a chance to play at one of the top 40 basketball programs in America. Somewhere along the line it will become a losing war of attrition for players because the classification of "elite" basketball talent is limited to fewer than 200 players nationwide.
The other 4,558 players rarely see any NIL compensation beyond $10,000.

In fact, colleges can now legally pay their athletes for academic performance up to $5,900 annually and barely a quarter of all colleges bother to even budget for performance bonus to athletes because of the prohibitive cost, especially at State schools which are often underfunded.

Everyone here is hung up in getting into bidding wars for a limited number of marquee athletes. You should embrace the reality that nothing is guaranteed by "individual" athletes but teams made up of competitive athletes coached by excellent coaches can make it to post season, which it all about. FDU, Princeton, FAU and San Diego State were not even THIS CLOSE to having multi million dollar NIL collectives. Where did Syracuse, Louisville, Pitt and UNC play this year?

St. John’s will be hosting five-star wing Mackenzie Mgbako of Roselle (N.J.) Catholic on an official visit Friday and Saturday, a source confirmed.

The 6-foot-8 Mgbako, a consensus top-10 prospect in the country, signed with Duke, but got out of his National Letter of Intent after multiple players at his position passed on the NBA to return to school at the ACC powerhouse.

Pitino and his staff already had made an in-home visit with Mgbako and there is confidence they have a legitimate shot at landing him.

St. John’s is looking for a forward capable of stretching the floor to pair with Joel Soriano.

The Red Storm have five open scholarships remaining, and have been active with a number of targets, such as four-star high school wing Brady Dunlap, Oregon State transfer Glenn Taylor Jr. and Massachusetts transfer R.J. Luis. All three visited in the past week.

Zach moving on from Noah as well huh

The difference between under the table pre-NIL and the current environment is the risk has been eliminated. Most of the players getting NIL today would not have been worth the potential sanctions risk in the past, With those risks gone, its a free-for-all and just about everyone is getting $.

Not saying I blame these semi-pros from seizing this opportunity. But, at risk of beating a dead horse, not good long term prospects for colleg sports.

Make no mistake about it, these are not semi-pros, these are pros. And this is no longer college sports, this are pro sports.

Or a single, stolen base, bunt him over to third
Modest hopes 😀

I know I am guilty of watching this site too often looking for good news. Creates unrealistic expectations. If I only checked once or twice a week and let the process play out, it would eliminate a lot of frustration. It’s that instant gratification thing rearing it’s ugly head again haha!

We're all doing the same thing. I'm only checking about 100 times a day! 😜

I blame the people on here for suggesting unattainable recruiting possibilities.
For years I would advocate for a mid major coach who would come in and emphasize the 3 and recruit to fit his style. This was always shot down as people clamored for the quick fix.

Well we are basically doing what I always wanted only with Rick Pitino instead of mid major coach. If Rick can get a difference maker every couple years we can be really good. And if he can’t I do believe we will always be in the conversation for the tournament.

I never paid attention to recruiting before and going to stop doing now.

I hear the years of frustration that often dictates projecting more of the same. It makes sense after all these years to see the dark side coming, but to be clear Pitino is not Norm Roberts, Mahoney, Anderson, Lavin, Mullin or Jarvis. He has been pretty successful in all of his college gigs. It is too early to judge anything yet, the roster is still being built, there are still a number of irons in the fire and even when the roster is completed it will be difficult to assess how the roster pieces will gel and perform together on the court.

The era of the transfer portal has altered the way we evaluate talent. Who here on this board was saying that Souley Boum coming from UTEP was going to make Xavier a force last year or Baylor Scheierman was going to go from South Dakota State to Creighton and be a main reason why they were nationally ranked last season. Let's not forget that last year's Big East player of the year was Tyler Kolek. I don't remember any projections of greatness for him when he transferred from George Mason to Marquette a couple of years back. The truth is there is far more here that is unknowable then there is anything that is knowable at this point. For me I will be in wait and see mode until we have played a bunch of games next season.
I talked to Kranmars . Your paragraphs are excellent but, they are long . Not excessively but , try and break them up into more paragraphs

Content is superior and consistent with prevailing commentary from many posters .
