Rick’s Targets

I think it's more STJ hasn't had the leadership in basketball -- up until now -- to catch up to this new reality. Hell, we never even caught up to the no stipend/dorms on campus reality 20+ years ago!

My guess is that Pitino himself was surprised by the "market" there is for players right now, and thought the NIL commitments made for this cycle would be enough. And that 2024, we will be much more ready to go.
IDT he was surprised.

Not when people have short-term or microwave views.
Also lets be real. Even if recruits have respect for Pitino it is hard to convince them that playing in the MAAC is the best place to display their talents to pro teams.

The Big East is a different story we have a long list of pro prospects who have come out of the conference since realignment

Putting this thread back on topic, I was surprised when Mahoney surfaced as the next likely commitment because his body language in those pics was tepid. i.e., less than 'happy', plus I'm not sure that he would be Rick's next 'key' piece he'd want to add for next season.
I'm not talking 'game changers' like Mgbako, but guys like Thomasson, or Luis---NOT a Mahoney.
Just my two cents.

True that the NCAA cannot “cap” an athlete’s marketing of their “name” “image” and “likeness” in its strictest sense, it may be possible for the NCAA and IRS to tighten control of the run away issues.

The worthless NCAA may be able to impose regulations requiring the payment to the athlete to be reasonably related to their performance of a service as opposed to mere payment for the athlete to attend a school.

Given the fact that the payor is suppose to be independent of the school the feckless NCAA could also impose regulations to prevent the coach or AD from being the intermediary or negotiator for the payor.

The IRS could attack the deductibility, or set strict regulations on deductibility of payments to N$Ls, or the deductibility of an N$L expenditure by and individual or business where the payee is not performing a reasonable service in return for the money received.
Why? Just let these dudes get paid not sure why it’s an issue. I guess if your doing the SJU fund it’s your money in a way but I’m not a part of that so I don’t get involved in other peoples money.

Yes, but what an unfair advantage he had over every other program in the MAAC given his background. It was the easiest thing ever for him to beat out similar schools. The guys was bringing in A-10 talent to the MAAC.

Deion had the same thing at Jackson State.

"Niagara transfer Noah Thomasson on his visit to St. John's: 'It was good. Coach P is a very genuine person. They definitely have something cooking up in queens.'

On bond with Daniss Jenkins: 'Daniss is my guy. I've known him now for a little over 5 years through the basketball world. We've definitely had conversations about playing together.'

Noah Thomasson says he is planning to visit Penn State and Pittsburgh before deciding"

Without a doubt, they are now professional athletes and for many, not all, this may be the biggest paycheck they receive for a long time, maybe ever. People are so hung up on the front of the jersey, and that has little bearing anymore. Anyone who has negotiated knows leverage, competition, choices, etc. have a huge bearing on one’s original position, subsequent gives and takes, and the final outcome.
Probably the biggest factor in current SJU recruiting is whether or not an adequate amount of NIL $ is in place and available; also the conditions on which that money can be offered, etc. The influence people putting up the money have on recruiting and a program in general varies greatly I would imagine. I have worked with enough contracts to think all of that MAY take some significant time to set up. Personally, I feel that is one of the reasons NIL seems to have exploded big time this portal period.

So we had 4-5 players visit in the past few days, and not one kid has committed. That's troubling to me. We have Pitino and the Garden. Are we literally that broke?
And none of this Pitino is behind the eight ball nonsense bc he just started. Georgia Tech is recruiting very well and they have a new coach.

Hmm "good" when 99% of the time visits go "great".

Half joking but we really need to lock him down before he takes other visits. No more excuses about us just "missing a few" of our top targets.

Hi all just wanted to throw this out from someone who's been following the program for almost 50 years and the last 20 have been mediocre at best(im being kind), we finally have the monster coach we all have pined for, so let him do his job, I've got 100 percent confidence that we couldn't be in better hands and I think we will all be very presently surprised by next year's on court results. In Ricky P we trust! Go Johnnie's.....
