Rick’s Targets

This is all very surprising to me. We have Rick Pitino as head coach and kids are holding off committing to us bc they want to visit schools like Rhode Island, Seton Hall and Pitt. Perhaps this is just a “head fake,” but if not, what the heck is going on?

What’s going on…
lol
And seems to me if we plan to compete at a top twenty level - and all signs point to that very plan for St. Johns - well then we need to play with this factor.
If Donald Duck can manage so can we and our rich alums and supporters etc.

I truly believe that NIL has become the #1 factor for many (if not most) recruits…yes, there are other factors (coacning, PT, facilities etc..)…It just seems like they are hunting the best financial deal (which is their prerogative) and, hence, they want as much competition as possible.

Without a doubt, they are now professional athletes and for many, not all, this may be the biggest paycheck they receive for a long time, maybe ever. People are so hung up on the front of the jersey, and that has little bearing anymore. Anyone who has negotiated knows leverage, competition, choices, etc. have a huge bearing on one’s original position, subsequent gives and takes, and the final outcome.
Probably the biggest factor in current SJU recruiting is whether or not an adequate amount of NIL $ is in place and available; also the conditions on which that money can be offered, etc. The influence people putting up the money have on recruiting and a program in general varies greatly I would imagine. I have worked with enough contracts to think all of that MAY take some significant time to set up. Personally, I feel that is one of the reasons NIL seems to have exploded big time this portal period.

Agree 1000%…assume we are heading in right direction or Pitino wouldn’t have taken job…But, right now, we’re playing Niliopoly with finite $s and we have to be somewhat judicious in how we spend it. Suspect he may be playing long game, offering 4/5 star players to get our name back out there with the big boys until we can approach their budget.

Every kid wants to hear how much the other school will offer. I suspect a lot of kids will be disappointed when they realize they’re not getting the amount they were promised

I’m thinking that the NCAA better fix the NIL sooner, rather than later. Maybe each school has to adhere to a cap, so talent can be spread out across all programs.

NIL needs rules/regulations for sure. It needs to be what it was intended to be, kids making money that they deserve from autographs, jersey sales, social media posts and brand deals. It quickly turned into free money from wealthy alumni that is set up through the school.

The kid may not even have a firm offer from SJU yet.

Immediate playing time and fit right away are other factors.

If he thinks he can start or play right away at School X as opposed to School Y.

Know someone in the portal, it’s almost all about money now, doesn’t really matter too much who the coach is anymore. The money is insane.

That would not solve the problem. It might only solve our problem.

If “our” problem is solved then there is no problem.

Since most of these players never play in the NBA I don’t blame them for seeking as much N$L money as possible.

I blame the piggish NCAA for not having headed off today’s N$L issue by sharing the wealth with the athletes decades ago.

The N$L payouts have exploded postseason 2022 to postseason 2023 and likely caught Pitino off guard since at StJ’s he is playing with an underfunded N$L account and this is the first time in his career he has dealt with serious N$L payouts.

RP has to sell that intangible NYC market $. If you can make it there than you can make it anywhere! (I feel a song coming on!) 😜
Of course, I'm in marketing. ;)

Paradigm has shifted and YES it is the money...

When we talk about NIL, we're talking basically about advertising, marketing and endorsement deals, ie Player X becomes the pitchman for Brand X.

Do you think NYC is the best place for this where the competition for ad dollars is extraordinarily intense?

Or is it easier when you're the only celebrity in a town like Syracuse, Storrs, Durham, Spokane, Chapel Hill, Bloomington, etc where every company wants you on a billboard?

Question for the lawyers, which I am not. NIL was declared legal. Therefore I would think it cannot be capped unless the NCAA admits the players are professional, the players unionize, and a collective bargaining agreement is negotiated. Which seems like an extremely unlikely combination.

But I’m no expert, so I ask - do I have this correct?

Not a lawyer but my understanding is this is why the NCAA wants there to be federal legislation because another issue is the patchwork of state laws that are legalizing university collaboration.

That may be the way NIL was intended but they be just handing out free bags no work required in return other than play.
