Ricardo Gathers, PF - BAYLOR

 Marcus,

Admire your steely optimism, but am told by some AAU folks in Fort Myers at the tourney that Ricardo has put us in the rear view mirror. Hope they are wrong.

That would be too bad. Press on with Jakarr and Obekpa if that's the case.

Polee, Anderson, Sampson, Gathers, Pelle, Lindsey, a bad string.

I don't see how you can count Anderson, as he was never a commit.

Because the coaching staff, after spending the entire summer on him, thought they had him in the bag.

They also thought they were gonna bag LeBryan Nash, if he made the trip to NYC. But, I still wouldn't count him, as he never committed.

You seriously don't see the difference?

Nope! The staff also thought they had Nash in the bag, if he had made his official visit. "In the bag" is in the bag, right? So, you might as well place Nash's name in the above-mentioned group, right?

Regardless, I wouldn't place neither players name above, as neither ever committed to St. John's.

You can add Amir to that group. Hopefully, he is now qualified. Anderson and his handlers jerked every east coast school around instead of being straight with them early. I do not wish him well at UCLA....just as I gave a kid from Holy Cross the evil eye when he thought he was too good for us.

It is just crazy how the names you listed above (except Anderson) were supposed to be the nucleus of a 2013 SJ team that could challenge for a Final Four spot along with Moe and Harrison.

Yes, it is a string of bad luck to say the least. Personally, I do not think the Big East reorganization has anything to do with it. Schools like Xavier, Gonzaga, UNLV, Creighton.....are not in the BE and are putting good classes together. I know Lav and the coaches are working hard but they have fallen behind with some key players and need to ink a couple of kids with both good academics and game to steady the team.

I also don't think the Big East reorganization has anything or very little to do with it, either. Quite frankly, his sibling involvement with his recruitment just makes me wary.

I agree MJ! His brother is the reason he decommitted. With so many recruits, it is everyone BUT the recruit making decisions. That is what makes recruiting so hard....knowing who the players are and keeping them happy. One truly has to multi-task to keep a player these days.
Regardless, next year we will be in very good shape with 5 or 6 additional players and Lav and company will need to bring in one 4 star recruit every year after that to keep the program on top.
God will reward Lav and St. John's.....that I am sure!

According to Coach Keady he would disagree with you in regards to Anderson.

He wants to play on the biggest stage then goes on to say "Now, I'm thinking outside the box!" Gathers said? "Now I'm looking ahead. I'm trying to go big now with [programs like Duke, Georgetown,Kentucky]."

That doesn't sound to good for us. He is now trying to go big. We might need to move on, hope not.

Coach Lavin wouldn't.

I was thinking the same thing. I would be happy w Sampson and Chris O, but they are far from sure things. I hope Lavin is looking at other bigs and a PG even if he has to go juco.

It is what it is. Gathers seems to have become jaded somewhere along the way. He loved SJU a few months ago and now with people in his ear, things might be different? Jut gotta sit it it and see what happens this spring. It will be interesting for sure. Don't be surprised if other guys pop into the equation that we aren't talking about now. Long way to go til spring signing. Sit back and see what Lavs can do.

Lavin is not backing off of Gathers which is a positive sign that he does not believe all is lost since Puke entered the Gathers' sweepstakes.

And we shouldn't back off. If he commits elsewhere in the spring then so be it. Until he commits somewhere, we should be all over him just like before.  Oh, and if he actually wants a successful NBA career, Duke is not the place to go. They bring in tons of talent but they don't out out high powered pros too often.

not to be the devil's advocate for Puke as there is a serious family rivalry that causes me stomach cramps just thinking of saying something nice about them but....
Maggette
Boozer
Battier
Brand
Deng
Duhon
Dunleavy
McRoberts
Williams
Jones
Reddick
Hill
are all present NBA players from Duke...you could add another 7 who had brief stints in the last 10 years
St. John's
Ron Artest was the only rostered player last year
brief stints in the last decade were 8 if you include the fact that Mullin played until 2000 and Jackson until 2003.

Fine and all, but Lavin can always whip out all of his UCLA players in the league - of which I am too lazy to research write on the Googles right now.

Lavin can just tell Gathers to catch a Knick game, and check out Baron Davis for one.

Those are not all "present" NBA players. Considering that Duke brings in like 6 McD's AA's every season, there hasn't been a shining representation of them in the NBA with relation to how many studs they bring in, I'm not comparing Duketo what SJU has put out, only that Lavin has put out quite a few and Harkless will be another. Duke players often not transitioning well to the NBA for some reason. Duke signs maybe more too high schoolers than anybody consistently, but IMHO their output of stud NBA players isn't all that great, that's all I'm saying.

The only name that matters in that entire list is Brand, because that's who Coach K. will point to in conversations with Gathers.

I'm more worried that Gathers' brother is an LSU fan more than I am worried about Duke, though.
