And Marinatto is driving the bus, right into the ditch!! This guy should have been so proactive starting a year ago when all this realignment first reared its ugly head. Instead he sat on his hands. He should have taken the 11.9 million a year per team bid from ESPN and then looked to expand in football after he had the deal and the current teams locked in.

No question, passing on that deal was a huge mistake, among the many he and others have made.

WVU headed to Big 12 if Missouri leaves

Edited on: October 25, 2011 12:18 pm

Shortly after Missouri officially announces it is withdrawing from the Big 12, West Virginia will be extended an invitation to join the Big 12, college football industry sources told CBSSports.com.

The Mountaineers invitation to the Big 12 is contingent on Missouri leaving for the SEC. Once Missouri notifies the Big 12 it is leaving, the Mountaineers' official invitation could come within "24-48 hours," a source said.

The Mountaineers would be the latest to leave the Big East Conference. Pittsburgh and Syracuse announced they are leaving for the ACC and TCU will join the Big 12 next season.

If West Virginia informs the Big East of its intention to leave before the league adds Navy or Air Force, the Mountaineers would only be held to a $5 million exit fee. If the Big East has added Navy or Air Force before the Mountaineers notify the Big East, they would have to pay $10 million. Either way, the Mountaineers would not be able to leave the Big East until June 30, 2014 – the same time frame as Syracuse and Pittsburgh.

Without West Virginia, Pitt, Syracuse and TCU, the remaining football league members are UConn, Rutgers, USF, Louisville and Cincinnati.

Two days ago in Washington D.C., Big East commissioner John Marinatto met with officials from Boise State, Houston, SMU, UCF and Navy, but no official invitations were extended. Air Force did not attend the meeting. Representatives from other Big East schools also attended.

The Big East hopes to add those schools – along with Air Force – to get to a 12-team football league. Even if the Big East adds those schools, without West Virginia, they still would need another school.

The Western contingent of the Big East's possible future members - Boise State, Air Force, Houston and SMU - are pushing for the Big East to pursue BYU. It's unknown if the Cougars, who had talks with the Big 12, would be interested in joining a 12-team Big East.

If the Big East could land BYU - along with the other five new schools - it would have two divisions: West - BYU, Air Force, Houston, SMU, Boise State and Louisville and East - UConn, Rutgers, USF, Cincinnati, Navy and UCF that Big East officials are confident would be worthy of retaining its BCS automatic qualifying status.

Besides BYU, other possible candidates for the Big East's 12th member would be Temple or East Carolina

Thanks for the info Tom. I would add Temple and Memphis for all sports also. I would put Memphis in the West for football and of course Temple in the East. This will do two things. It solidifies to football conference because with 14 teams, If a Louisville or a Cincinnati or both decided to leave for either the SEC or the Big 12 down the road there would still be enough football teams to have two divisions and a championship game. Taking Memphis and Temple would also restore the power of our basketball league and we would still be better than the ACC. Memphis is going to wind up having a top 10 program this year. They have a outstanding athletes on that team.

If they could get BYU to play in the Western conference, that would be a huge plus, and serve as an entciment to the other Western schools. But, I do agree about Memphis and Temple, the Big East needs to think about the basketball side of the equation as well, and those two teams would slot in nicely.

It shouldn't be this damn hard to throw a conference together. But I guess it is when you sit on your hands and do nothing.

too bad marinatto doesn't read these forums. he's completely in over his head...totally lost.

how did a guy who was fired as providence a-d manage to be picked to run the big east, anyway? is there a law that the commissioner has to come from providence?

With West Va. looking like they are bolting, and the status of schools like UCONN, Rutgers, Louisville and possibly Cincy tenuous, I would like to see an non-football (with the exception of ND) league "Vatican Conference" formed:

St. John's, Nova, G'Town, The Hall, PC, Marquette, DePaul, Xavier, ND, Dayton and in an ecumenical spirit (Bishop) Butler.

Arguably, the aforementioned have, within reason, a common bond as well as relatively similar student bodies and alumni.

If I am not mistaken, I thought the Big East ADs voted against the ESPN deal. I didn't think the commissioner could accept the deal without agreement from the schools.

so does the patriot league.

It's not about just throwing a conference together. It's about throwing a conference together that can maintain a BCS bid. Without WVU that will not happen. They are far and away the Big East's best football team. When this becomes official UConn and Rutgers will be gone by the end of the week. You can throw all the service academies and Conference USA schools at the Big East that you want but when it's all said and done Big East football is dead. It's really time to move on. I just want a basketball only conference that keeps the Big East name.

If I am not mistaken, I thought the Big East ADs voted against the ESPN deal. I didn't think the commissioner could accept the deal without agreement from the schools.

You're correct RedStormRising but, if memeory serves me correctly (and someone please correct me if I'm wrong) Marinatto advised them to vote it down because at that point he was in talks with TCU and he thought that after TCU signed on and he had the Dallas market that he could negotiate a better deal. Then he was talking to Comcast, who bought NBC, and that pissed off ESPN, who then went behind the scenes and engineered the deal for the ACC with Pitt and Cuse. ESPN did it puposely to try and destroy the Big East because they turned down the 11.9 mill offer and were then talking to Comcast and NBC about a deal after they got TCU. I think that's how this played out.

Why would ND stay in the basketball only league? and not move to another conference for all non FB sports?

What league do you propose? We're the only major conference that let them pull their all-sports-but-football shtick.
