Revamped Big East

This is the wrong time for manners.....We need to move decisively Boise State, Navy, Air Force, Houston, and SMU.
I would get these shools all sitting down together and pushing to close a deal now. What we are waiting for is a complete mystery.....While we are at it add Memphis State and Temple! Don't wait pull the trigger. Get it done,

Frank,

Do you really believe that any new "football school" of value is willing to commit to the BEast if they don't know whether Louisville, west virginia, or cincinnati are part of the equation?

Continuing a hybrid conference made up of the basketball only schools and the football schools that have no place else to go is merely kicking the can down the road because each of the football schools will continue efforts to exit the BEast and will bolt the nanosecond they receive a better offer from the ACC, SEC, Big Ten, or any other BCS Conference. Don't kid yourself a paltry $10M exit fee will not discourage a team from leaving because the difference in the payout from the other conference would retire the BEast exit fee in a couple of years.

As I have stated previously I sincerely believe that the long term interests of St.John's and the other BEast basketball only schools is served by voting "no" on all expansion thereby forcing the football schools to go there own ways and forging a basketball conference similar to the original Big East offering all sports except football. I spoke to a television executive last week and he believed that the following conference would have saleability:

St. John's (New York)
Seton Hall (metro New Jersey)
Providence (New England)
Villanova (Philly/ New Jersey)
Georgetown (DC metro area)
Marquette (Milwaukee)
DePaul (Chicago)
Notre Dame (national)
Xavier (Cincinnati)
Dayton (population of 841,502)
Butler (Indianapolis SMSA population = 1,756,241)

I LOVE Temple.

Bob, You seem to be focused on Basketball only. However right now everyone is still doing all they can to save the bowl bid and football. That is why I wrote my post earlier about moving more quickly than it seems the Big East is moving. Let's do our best to put together the best teams possible in both sports. If after we do all we can to save football and hopefully the football schools (there are some good teams in basketball among them) and it doesn't work out, then let's go for broke to put tegether a Basketball Super Conference.

OTIS, so you are comfortable seeing SIX of the top 8 BE teams leave? Your list would justify calling the conference the Big Least! The only reason the Big East has had any marketability in the past ten years has been because of the basketball-playing football members. It is hard enough to replace Syracuse and Pitt but adding Uconn, WV, Louisville and Cincy to the exit list and what do we have left?

The sad truth is that over ten years now schools like Seton Hall, DePaul, Providence and SJ have not added any value to the conference. The culture of failure and mediocrity is not a future I envision for our team. Now that we have Lav it is important to have the strongest basketball conference to be a part of and not some glorified super A10.

1. Syracuse
2. Connecticut
3. Louisville
4. Pittsburgh
5. Marquette
6. Cincinnati
7. West Virginia
8. Villanova

Villanova wants to be in the Big East for football, bottom line," Wright said during Big East basketball media day at the New York Athletic Club

But our most reliable source on Villanova football, OTIS, said Nova was no longer interested in joing for Fb and withdrew its bid?!?!?

What is hysterical in coach Wright's double-talk is he fails to point out that Nova has made no investment in its upgrade attempt other than do a "study"! An optimistic timetable would have Nova upgraded by 2015. Sure, the survival of the Big East is at stake and they should admit Nova, who cannot be competitive, until 2015. Someone in the league better explain the concept of "AQ" to Mr. Wright and then have him explain how Nova helps the Big East in the AQ department in 2014.

That's the way it is; many within HS sporting communities believe that it is only a matter of time before the better players in soccer, basketball, and baseball stop playing HS altogether and just play on club/AAU type teams or elite sports centric "private" schools. The landscape of sports as we know them is going to change dramatically over the next decade or so in both college and high school.

 Newsman,

Your linked article is an excellent analysis of the options which the BEast faces. I logged into Redmen.com to post the Newark Star Ledger article but you beat me to it.

My take has flipped and I now believe that is in the long term interests of St.John's to forge a basketball focused conference without FBS.

I respect your opinion. What's your thoughts?

Thanks.

What about jay wright's idea?

I am a huge collge football fan, but what is happening now is a downright shame. No matter who we bring in football or basketball wise, it will not be the same and it won't be better. I include that with us going into some "Catholic League" as some have proposed here before. Anyway you slice it, it won't be the good old BE. 16 teams was too many, but they had to try to save the league and it worked for awhile.

I wonder if there were playoffs in the "DI Bowl Division", if this would have happened?

if villanova wants in for football...let them in. as long as they're not replacing someone who could keep the league's automatic qualifier status. villanova is a minus in that area. uconn got into football thanks to the connecticut legislature's largess.. even with 90 million dollars in taxpayer money and counting, no one is confusing uconn with alabama. where is villanova going to get that kind of money?

basketball opinion? the coaches obviously hate it...but the league will never be the same. not unless syracuse and pittsburgh can be coaxed back the way tcu was coaxed into dumping the big east. how to make it better? merge with the the cream of the atlantic 10 and make their commissioner the head of big east basketball. take smu, houston, memphis, butler, boise state and air force...maybe vcu and east carolina and make a 32 team super conference with four eight team divisions. play each team in your division twice to enhance rivalries. schedule some games out of division. a 32 team tournament with the opening round in cities such as chicago, houston, orlando and new york could begin in early march. the final 16 can come to new york..with half the opening round at barclays in brooklyn and the other half at msg. the final eight or four could be at msg. this tournament would be better than the nit and almost on a par with the ncaa... people will be "practicing" filling out their brackets before they get another chance a week later.

you have to think big. quality size matters. huggins, pitino and calhoon may no like it...but so what? their schools are still flirting with leaving. it's time to get on the offensive. it's past time.

West Virginia looms as next Big 12 target

The Big 12 as expected will lose Missouri to the Southeastern Conference within the next few days, but according to sources in the Big 12, the target team to replace the Tigers is West Virginia.
According to sources in the Big 12 and Big East, the Big 12 expansion will hold at 10 teams for the time being. And while Missouri will leave for the SEC next season, West Virginia will not be available to the Big 12 until the 2014 season since the Big East will enforce the 27 month departure rule for all of its teams (Syracuse, Pittsburgh to the ACC) who are moving,
With Missouri's decision, and only the departure of West Virginia, the Big East is expected to offer inviations to Boise State, Southern Methodist, Houston, Central Florida, Air Force and Navy over the next several days.

West Virginia will become a football doormat in the Big 12! LOL!
In the BE they were top THREE, in the B12 they become bottom 3!
Who the heck is making these decisions?
Bobby Huggins must love the idea of playing in the Texas/Oklahoma conference! Good-bye New York area recuits!
The good news would be that Morgantown will never have to be visited again down the road.

I know there are a lot of people on this sight with access to contacts at St. Johns and in the Big East. Someone needs to get to Marinatto. He has to bring in Temple and Memphis also. There's not guarantee that the Big 12 will not try to poach from us again down the road. They have to get Memphis and Temple in now and solidify this thing.

No less strange but no stranger, right? Not sure if the pot (synthetic or otherwise) has anything to do with that.

While I agree generally that the BE should look to go big I think that 32 team behemoth might be too much to handle and be too watered down. Suggest they look to 24, 4 FB only, 12 BB only, 6 remaining FB schools plus two more both. Proposed schools:

FB Only:
Navy
Air Force
Boise State
SMU (can't have Doh sullying the reputation of BE basketball) or UCF

Both:
UConn
WVU (replaced by Houston if they go B12)
Rutgers
USF
Louisville
Cincy
Memphis
Temple or BYU (how long can they really last as an independent)

Hoops Only:
STJ
G Town
UND
Providence
Seton Hall
Nova
DePaul
Marquette
Butler
Dayton
Xavier
Gonzaga (not likely), Creighton or VCU (most likely)

This type of alignment would still maintain a viable football conference that should be able to maintain a BCS bid but also where teams can stay and compete for that bid as opposed to run away and flounder against the big boys that, let's face it even if they won't, they'll never be. It will also give the basketball schools a bit of peace of mind in a viable standalone conference if things go sour and a strong hoops voting block to try and keep that from happening.

24 instead of 32 would be okay. i'm more married to the four divisions with built in home and home rivalries and a great tournament at the end.

now that i live in new jersey...i can thank governor christie for pushing through that medical marijuana law. it'll do wonders for my aches and pains.
