Revamped Big East

.... and East Carolina.

Why the Temple hate?

Tom,

Please reread your above post (#4816) that I commented on and you will see that you modified the sentence you quoted from the CBS article to omit East Carolina. My mention of ECU was to merely add the school you omitted.

Marinatto seems like he's more concerned about not hurting Conference USA's feelings than he is about saving the Big East.

That was a PR statement.

He got serious ass burns dragging his feet over the summer while the ACC was scheming to steal two more Big East teams. He has no time to have "feelings" about ConfUSA. He knows he needs to lock in Air Force in order to get Navy. But he also knows that without Houston and SMU, Boise State may jump at an offer from the Big 12 if Missouri leaves. Therefore, time is of the essence and the BE football schools want this done this week. The basketball schools can only sit and watch it unfold.

Looks like Mizzou goin to SEC. I hope Big 12 happy with 10 and stops with Boise. If they want 12 we lose Louisville and W. Va. Where would BE go from there?

Memphis and temple?

Is the Big 12 ready to make football-only offers? Because I seriously doubt they'd want Boise for all sports.

Marinatto should have had this done already. Forget about waiting for Big East Media Day. We're talking about saving the conference here. He should have had this done with Boise St., SMU, Houston, UCF, Air Force and Navy along with Memphis and Temple. This guy is horrible and now that Mizzou is going to the SEC he's going to blow this deal also. His only option now is ECU, UCF, Memphis and Temple for all sports. I doubt Houston and SMU will come without Boise St. if they go Big 12. Marinatto has wasted opportunity after opportunity. He's one step behind constantly.

I am not saying that Marinatto has done a good job because he has not; but this is driven by football and all the football schools were waiting to see the fallout from a possible Missouri move. Now if you are Boise St. do you commit to the Big East w/o the knowledge of what the league will look like? They were all waiting for invites to a better football conference, including UConn and now Louisville and Cincy. The dominos are about to fall and Big East Basketball schools may be left out in the cold or in a watered down basketball conference. The Big East being poor in Football has nothing to offer these schools who want a stronger football conference.

One key thing is that many of the schools who want to be in a stronger football conference do not have a strong enough football team to warrant an invite. With the SEC just about done, the ACC possibly done, the B1G maybe getting two more max, there's not many options left for schools to be a good fit.

 Andy Katz loves Temple also.

Big East should eye Memphis and Temple http://espn.go.com/mens-college-bas...-potential-expansion-moves-college-basketball

This is what I've been posting from the beginning. If the conference wanted to stay together in both Football and Basketball, after losing Pitt and Cuse, Memphis and Temple would be the best options to replace them as dual sport schools because of there football potential and there established basketball prowess. Then you bring in whichever of the other schools that you can comvince to join. Unfortunately, Marinatto is lost and now with Mizzou heading to the SEC I thibnk the Big East as we know it with both football and basketball is dead. If that's the case then the BBall only schools should get all the BBall only schools together and form a BBall super conference and market it as such. You have all the remaining Big East schools with Xavier, Butler, Dayton, Richmond, St. Louis with Majerus, you can add a few other A-10 schools and it would be an excellent basketball league. Would it command the huge TV money but they would be in enough big markets to get a decent deal, not a football deal by any stretch but a good deal.

I personally would go for BYU, UNLV, and SDSU if I were the Big 12 ... but I'm not, and they'll probably try to kill the Big East by taking all six remaining football schools.

meanwhile, marinatto is sitting in the fetal position sucking his thumb...wondering what the other conferences want to do with the big east before he'll make a "bold" move.

the only way the big east survives is if the other conferences are done cherry picking the teams they want.

My sentiments exactly!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A battle of wits between two horrible commissioners would have been fun to watch, but sadly, the Big 12 was too smart and fired theirs. Although I know a lot of fans aren't happy with the interim replacement, either.

And I'm starting to repeat myself way too much here, but how hard is it to figure out that Memphis and Temple need to be a part of this conference? Football will never be great, so just get to 12 teams and maybe West Virginia or Boise will go undefeated one year and sneak near the top of the rankings.

The eight Catholics need to fight tooth and nail against watering down the basketball side. They really are bending over and letting the football schools have their way with them.

This is the wrong time for manners.....We need to move decisively Boise State, Navy, Air Force, Houston, and SMU.
I would get these shools all sitting down together and pushing to close a deal now. What we are waiting for is a complete mystery.....While we are at it add Memphis State and Temple! Don't wait pull the trigger. Get it done,

And unless the Big East is planning some sort of unexpected surprise, on paper it seems like they are targeting one school too many. A 17-team basketball conference is pretty crappy. Make it two eight-team divisions or three six-team ones. The odd number screws everything up.

To seal the deal, and to guarantee a yearly sellout, the BE has announced that the annual BE football championship game will be played at historic villanova field.

Frank,

Do you really believe that any new "football school" of value is willing to commit to the BEast if they don't know whether Louisville, west virginia, or cincinnati are part of the equation?

Continuing a hybrid conference made up of the basketball only schools and the football schools that have no place else to go is merely kicking the can down the road because each of the football schools will continue efforts to exit the BEast and will bolt the nanosecond they receive a better offer from the ACC, SEC, Big Ten, or any other BCS Conference. Don't kid yourself; a paltry $10M exit fee will not discourage a team from leaving because the increased media payout from the other conference would retire the BEast exit fee in a couple of years.

As I have stated previously I sincerely believe that the long term interests of St.John's and the other BEast basketball only schools is served by voting "no" on all expansion thereby forcing the football schools to go there own ways and forging a basketball conference similar to the original Big East offering all sports except football. I spoke to a television executive last week and he believed that the following conference would have saleability:

St. John's (New York)
Seton Hall (metro New Jersey)
Providence (New England)
Villanova (Philly/ New Jersey)
Georgetown (DC metro area)
Marquette (Milwaukee)
DePaul (Chicago)
Notre Dame (national)
Xavier (Cincinnati)
Dayton (population of 841,502)
Butler (Indianapolis SMSA population = 1,756,241)
