Revamped Big East

Houston Basketball does seem like its coming back with 2 top 100 recruits for 2012. If they go to the Big East the recruiting could get even better there.

Remember, they have 4 or 5 Final 4's and a NC appearance back with Phi Slamma Jamma. Lots of history there with Drexler, Olajuwon etc. I like the Houston addition for the bball side of things. Still wanted Temple/Memphis, but hey, whatever gets this thing to stay on board and ahead of the ACC. :)

They have a great history, but like DePaul they haven't been relevant for the last 25+ years.

(And yes, I know about glass houses...)

Neither have we. Doesn't mean that schools can't recover, especially if and when Houston is in a much better basketball conference. Houston has more going for it than DePaul does IMO, but DePaul is getting there with Purnell. They'll get better as well and quite a few schools will benefit from Cuse and Pitt leaving in all actuality. I'd like to see DePaul do well. There is some talent there now and Purnell is recruiting pretty well. It takes some time, but I think they are working towards being competitive.

My point really is that Houston has some pedigree and tradition of winning. They can be there again. It helps our league to have schools playing in it that have some track record of winning. Helps our reputation basketball-wise. All I care about is maintaining a reputation for bball excellence.

IMO, Robbins is right about the NY market in a way. Rutgers is much better poised to land the lower NY market. Nobody in lower NY cares about Syracuse football AT ALL. This is about football, right? The ACC made a mistake with Syracuse and BC as well. They give them little exposure in markets that are actually valuable. I think Robbins is correct in that the new version of the Big East will actually be more attractive on the football side than before despite losing Pitt and Cuse. The bigger loss was Pitt football-wise. They don't care about bball anyway.

We are poised now to have a nice national football conference overall with quite a few additions. The bball side lost two real good teams, but is still a top bball conference without them, considering that we were sending 8-10 teams yearly to the NCAA anyway. With the right basketball coach, Houston is primed to be quite a basketball school. They have the history. The rest will be fine in time with added conference exposure.

Some thought that the Big East schools made a mistake by not striking early. Maybe not so dumb to wait till dust settles after all..

Your tone seems to indicate you are disagreeing with my post but in actuality you are in basic agreement with me.

  .... and East Carolina.

Why the Temple hate?

Why do you condider his statement "and" to be hate toward Temple? BE could lose multiple teams. BTW I think Temple would be a tremendous addition to the BE in all sports, F Nova. How's that for hate for Nova for being selfish in blocking Temple from joining the conference in the first place!

TIme to start looking at Memphis seriously as well.  Even if Big 12 takes a school or two, they aren't going to take all of L'ville, WVU, RU, Uconn. There will be some odd men out. Need to start adding schools pronto. League already raised the exit fee which is good.

Why the Temple hate?

East Caolina, like The University of Central Florida, are the fastest growing schools in their states. Three years down the road they could be powers on the east coast in football. The Big East has never had a presence in the Carolinas and ECU is really the only option there.

The bottom line is any school that Sandra Bullock attened is going to be high on my list! LOL!

I agree with you regarding Memphis. I know their football program is pretty bad but they bring an excellent basketball program and we need that to offset the losses of Pitt and Cuse

The Big East’s presidents and chancellors voted unanimously Monday night to increase the league’s exit fee to $10 million

If the Big East lost any schools to the Big 12 or other conferences, the next likely candidates the Big East would pursue would be Temple

Not so fast:
"...but the increased fee is contingent on Navy and Air Force joining the league as football only members, sources told CBSSports.com."

Looks like we already extended an offer to Houston.

John Marinatto confirms @CBSSports report: increased exit fee to $10M based on execution of expansion plan

Marinatto said he can not specifically name schools as expansion targets

Marinatto "It's our commitment to meet the standards to meet our BCS qualifications."

Marinatto: "Stay tuned (on timeframe). We're not rushing ourselves to meet anyone's deadline. The sooner, the better."

Marinatto: "No invitations have gone out."

Marinatto: "We still have pretty strong basketball conference."

Marinatto said he won't "close the door" on further expansion to strengthen Big East hoops.

Marinatto: "I think there's a right way to expand, situation that we're in."

Marinatto: "I don't think anyone will be blindsided or feel bushwhacked when these process is complete."

Marinatto: "Not going to pause during Missouri situation."

Marinatto: Pittsburgh & Syracuse will not be allowed to leave before June 30, 2014

Marinatto: "Just one team needs to agree and exit fee agrees." (McMurphy's interpretation)That means Navy or Air Force on board, fee goes to $10M

Marinatto: "No new challenges going to Mountain Time Zone."

Marinatto said league has not had any discussions on disbanding (if league loses any more members)

Marinatto: "We've had preliminary conversations with several schools"

Need it to stay together RT @Matt_HayesSN: "Notre Dame worked side by side w/other schools as we've tried to figure out way thru all of this

Marinatto: Not been contacted by any other conferences since TCU to Big 12

Marinatto: "(Big East) championship game is ultimately where we would like to go"(perhaps in NYC)

Marinatto again says that he's in no hurry to let Syracuse and Pitt go to the ACC, even if league is at 14 in football.

Marinatto confident that if "God forbid" something other team leaves that the Big East will survive. "I think we’ll be fine."

Marinatto was effusive in noting how committed Notre Dame is to Big East, lauding ND President (and BE chair) Father Jenkins.

Marinatto said there's been no discussion of how few football schools would have to remain to make Big East football untenable.

Marinatto seems like he's more concerned about not hurting Conference USA's feelings than he is about saving the Big East.
