Recruits for next year?

Would not shock me if Lavin gave a scholarship to David Lipscomb. He & Delarosa brothers would not excite me. Hopefully DL remains a walk on. (Joey D as well) Adding a PF of consequence seems imperative, since Adonis is not ready for prime time. A fifth year transfer, who can score, like Mason, would also help, as Marillac has noted. Just saying...

It's a little troubling that we're answering all these questions now. In almost April.
Lavin's recruiting has been so good that it's basically above reproach, but this season is baffling me. But I'll give him the benefit of the doubt on recruiting.

He will justify it with comments about how hard they practice.

Give one to Ndiaye.
At least he started.

Think you are right on Paultz

.......... If Mr.Lavin has done such a great job recruiting [your term: "beyond reproach"] during each of his 4 years at StJohns then please explain why StJohns (a) came in 5th place in the Big East regular season, (b) failed to qualify for the NCAA Tournament, (c) lost first round in the NIT, (d) has reportedly made 14 scholarship offers during the 2014 recruiting cycle but has failed to secure any recruits, and (e) has failed to secure any recruits for the 2015 cycle despite the fact many schools have already secured one or more quality players for the 2015 cycle?

(a) they tied for 3rd place.
(b) their record wasn't good enough.
(c) they were outscored.
(d) they would't give Whitehead's coach a job.

And the notion that we actually recruited 14 players from this class is laughable.
Besides McCullough and Whitehead who else did they even go to watch play?
Lavin has his faults but he didn't go 0-14 with recruits this year. He de emphasized this class and concentrated on 2015, which I think is a mistake. But he didn't go 0-14. He's too good of a recruiter for that to happen

Desco, they did also aggressively go after Terrell, Abu and Paschal Chuwku. They came in late, but tried.

Tom, Desco, and Paultz made good points in their recent replies to Otis.

@Otis: To coat-tail ride Desco's reply.... Lavin is too good of a recruiter to go 0-14. I've stated several other times that we weren't actually after all of those kids you believed we missed out on, Otis.

Paultzman is correct.... We were aggressively after Terrell , Abu (though, I sense he was pushed to NC State), and Chukwu. But came in a bit too late.

I would've loved to have gotten Whitehead, and if it was up to him, then he'd be teaming up with Jordan and Harrison in the backcourt a season from now. Unfortunately, we all know how that went down.

@CasualHoya: Temple transfer Anthony Lee is reportedly visiting Georgetown today.

We did not finish 5th in the conference, we ended tied for 3rd. We were seeded 5th.

You are so unbelievably negative all the time. What is your deal? Are you even a St. John's fan?
Nobody is happy with the way the season ended, but we aren't a blue blood program. Lavin has coached us to twenty win seasons in two out of the three full seasons he has been here. His recruiting at two schools has been flat out ridiculous, and anyone that tries to take that away from him has an axe to grind is letting their biases get the best of them. What he does with the top rated talent is a completely different story. No coach in the country would have done any better 2011-2012 with nothing but freshmen and no depth or size.

I don't know that I would classify his recruiting at sju flat out ridiculous.

I don't know that I would classify his recruiting at sju flat out ridiculous.

He signed more top 100 recruits in one season than Norm Roberts did in 40 years. We were completely irrelevant, and this guy comes in without scouting or recruiting for over a half-decade and out-recruits guys that have been building relationships with those players for 4 or 5 years...guys that have had the same recruits on campus for camps and sat in their living rooms before Lavin even took the job. I'd say that is pretty ridiculous.

I don't like excuses, and it wouldn't be valid if it were to happen now, but when Moe Harkless left it was devastating. He was the first recruit. He was the guy Lavin build around, and we had no upperclassmen to replace him. Nobody could have expected him to go that early. He was a kid that wasn't even in the top 50 at that point. Knowing he had a well-rounded kid like Moe and then Harrison shortly after, Lavin went out and grabbed raw athletes with incredible upside. The WV model doesn't work too well if you remove Devin Ebanks. I think Lavin learned his lesson and it shows in the last few recruiting classes. He has gone after kids with skill. Getting a top 25 kid to St. John's is a coup and that JUST HAPPENED. The year before brings in Sanchez and two top 75 kids everyone wanted.

The more we win, the more swagger the guy will have in recruiting. He's building relationships now. He is in good at OSNA, he has a walkon whose father has to top 75 kids on his high school team, he has had kids coming to St John's games and camps, etc.

Sensible poster ALERT! Let the knives come out.

Btw, I think Lavin has done an awful job coaching this team this year (and I know NOTHING about basketball). I would love to have Dunlap back and I hope Whitesell can help with the offense.

I have no complaints about Lavin's recruiting.

Lavin's recruiting has been so good that it's basically above reproach, but this season is baffling me. But I'll give him the benefit of the doubt on recruiting.

.......... Rivals claims StJohns offered 14 recruits during the 2014 cycle, Scout claims Lavin offered 7 recruits, ESPN claims 6. ... but in the final analysis, it doesn't really matter whether Lavin offered 14, 7 or even zero because StJohns has zero recruits coming in next year with the possible exception of transfer Joey DeLaRosa, his brother or some unknown player found during a late scramble. The recently completed season was a disappointment to all but a few StJohns fans yet Lavin has seemingly failed to bring in any new talent into the program for improvement while most Big East teams have reloaded.

So Yeah, I disagree with the above quote that Lavin's recruiting is so good that it is beyond reproach.

IMO after his first season at StJohns Lavin has by and large brought in talent that has proven to be "pretty good" (Sanchez and Obekpa) to "mediocre" (Balamou, Bourgault, Jones, Hooper, Joey DeLaRosa) with just one big time recruit (Jordan) during the last 3 cycles.

If Lavin's recruiting has been so good than why didn't StJohns do better than a 5 seed in the Big East Tournamapent? ..... or beat Robert Morris?

I regret that my remarks are seen as "negative" but to me saying that " Lavin's recruiting has been so good that it's basically above reproach" is at best, wishful thinking.

You keep coming back how many recruits Rivals says we offered (probably not the best barometer) and whiffed on. The year is still not over. What if Calipari whiffed on 30 recruits this year? Would everything he has done be wiped out? I'm not saying Lavn is Calipari, but applying the logic you use to back up your arguments it would render his past accomplishments worthless. Lavin can recruit. Can he instill toughness in his guys? Not that I've seen. Can he develop players? Debatable. Is he an x's and o's guru? I'd want him drawing up plays as much as I would want Otis to lead a St. John's pep rally.

You gotta be kidding, right? Do you think those things directly correlate with his recruiting? Indirectly, that's a possibility, but certainly not directly.

If that's the case, then you may wanna question the recruits of many teams who were a particular seed and bounced by a "supposed" inferior opponent.
