Didn't remember that Spencer was from Rutgers. That makes him a lateral transfer, so he doesn't apply to what I was talking about about.

The only lateral transfers we have are Allyne (who was doing OK until he hurt his ankle) and Zuby (raw, but talented).

I'm talking about guys who come from much lower conferences. You can't build your whole team around guys like that.
And Taylor

Look, he's not playing like one right now, but let's not rewrite history to try and make a point. The kid was an all Big East level player last season, projected to be a 1st team all big east player this season, and played like one for the early part of the season. Something physical, mental or both is going on right now that's preventing him from playing up to his ability. No one is happy with how he's performing, but I for one am not going to discount how he's performed in the past, and give up on him performing that way again before the season is
over.

I’m not rewriting history. I am talking about the here and now. He’s not top 3 in the league. When he’s up against the likes of Clingan, Kalkbrenner, Ighodaro, Oduro, etc he falls short. I don’t care about the Big East preseason poll, it’s irrelevant at this point.

By that rationale, when a perennial all star(baseball, basketball, etc) goes in to a 10 game slump, they cease to be an all star caliber player any more. I get it now.

PS Joel has been in a 4 game slump. 4 freakin games! If it were up to you and some of the other knee jerk posters, he'd have been thrown off the team by now.

C'mon. Saying he's not top 3 in the league is not the same as saying he should be thrown off the team.

We literally just had a list of 10+ guys who are impact players in the Big East who came from non-major programs.

Hell, looking at the national landscape on a very very quick search:
Mark Sears -- averaging 20ppg at Alabama. Transfer from Ohio
Dalton Knecht -- averaging 20ppg at Tennessee. Transfer from North Colorado
Tyson Walker -- averaging 19ppg at Michigan State. Transfer from Northeastern

The issue is that we simply chose wrong in the portal. It's not where they came from, it's about the players specifically.

I'm exaggerating, but I think you're being overly critical of the kid. Yes he's not playing anywhere near his capabilities, and his poor play has is a direct result of the teams poor play, but let's at least give the kid a chance to bounce back before we crucify him. He's earned that much with his performances over the past few seasons.

But again, on a team that was loaded to begin with. When you can just integrate them in, and let them develop, with proven talents around them, it's much easier.

You can carry guys like, but they can't make up most of your team, which is our problem.

He’s the sieve on defense. He is a complete liability playing d.
If he actually ran back and tried his hardest. I would appreciate him and cut him a break. He is the captain, set the example for the rest of the team.
He’s a shrinking violet!

I have been critical, true, although I don't think I've spammed the boards with it. I genuinely feel sorry for him at this point. He was put into an impossible position, oversold by Pitino and overhyped by the media.

what do you think is wrong with him, not sure its laziness. he seems so slow moving and thinking, it is shocking compared to his past play. he even looks disinterested.

He never should have been made captain. Some guys can't handle that responsibility.

Doesn't make him a bad guy, but he seems very laid back, in general. It worked for him, but I'm not sure it's right for most people.

Just like the Yankees were wise to never make Paul O'Neill captain. Punching out water coolers after making an out worked for him, but I wouldn't want Bernie Williams emulating that.

Not exactly. I think it is an attitude issue of for some reason not being happy and letting that affect his play on offense and defense. That is on him, whether it is petulance, immaturity, sensitivity etc. But now in the NIL world, they are not "kids" and is a paid professional (I hate it but true), so he has to suck it up and play with intensity and purpose, or be subject to criticism. He has not played that way for a long time. I think Pitino's very harsh comment is based in the fact that he is probably disappointed and maybe even a little embarrassed by how he built Joel up and made him a linchpin of the team.

On a different note- sure it was mentioned during the game on this thread- but obviously with the result- haven't seen much mention of it the past 10 pages...

How about the game- but more so the EFFORT- by Conway last night? from the top rope outta no where... dude came to play! Loved watching that- esp from a 5th yr kid buried on the bench most of the year.

Missed an Open Jumper in the final minute... but other than that- loved everything he brought last night. Hope he sees more court-time.
Got to give it to Conway. He’s been the odd man out most of the season and didn’t even see the floor often yet he stayed with it and has made some great contributions of late.

At this point in the season you know what you are gets my with every kid mostly. The only thing you can really hope for is we have a lot of winnable games left and you hope we go on a roll and build confidence. Every guy here don’t even lie you’ve been to a bar when you were a kid and got shot down by a hottie and same night you hook up with someone else even if you don’t remember what she looked like ( Monte knows that. lol ) and you are now unstoppable on top of the world.

I’m beyond bummed but just win Sunday and let’s worry about shit

I too feel bad for Joel. He wanted so badly to lead his team to a memorable year but it was not to be. Watching his face yesterday, you could see that cockiness (in a good way) and confidence was gone. He looked so worried about making a mistake he looked unsure of himself, almost scared.
