Providence Game

Funny post game video right here. If anybody knows Kirko Bangz, he's a pretty popular hip hop/r&b guy from Houston and is good friends with DLo.

Looks like DLo, CO, Myles Stewart and I can't make out the fourth person. Good to see them enjoying the win

Gut check win tonight, it saved our season
We hit 4 more 3 balls in 4 less attempts, 58% - 28%
Phil was on fire hitting 5-8

It's good to see the Euro kid getting 14minutes, Balamou 7, and Joey 6.

On to DePaul.

I think you are a little too much of an all or nothing poster. This win didn't save our season. We had the #31 RPI in the country coming in. We could have lost this game and been in better shape than were entering it by winning the next three.

I agree that it was great gut check win, but we need to avoid running for the ledge every time things don't go our way. We have an excellent RPI on our side and a very respected conference unlike last year.

You need more than a few conference game under your belt before rpi can really be taken seriously. Providence was #13 in rpi going into tonight's game.

But your point about not being a mercurial fan is a good one.

If we can have 4 scorers with more than 17 points, we'll be tough to beat and time. Hope to see more of this in the future.

Desperate time's call for desperate measures.  Props to the wizard for learning from his previous mistakes and substituting intelligently after the Obekpa foul that sent him to the bench. After going with five guards much of the game against Nova, Lavin realized the taller Friars would sleep walk to a win if he pulled that again and utilized Joey and Amar. Of course our guards won this game but I was impressed with Amar's aggressive play and cool composure. This kid does not back down from anyone and should be used in every situation when Lavin is tempted to use Christian Jones.
As it turns out, Branch cutting his finger was just what the doctor ordered. Rysheed regained his confidence and provided St. John's with another scoring option which is something Branch does not provide.  This was a must win to stop the bleeding and quiet some of us who were getting frustrated with three straight Big East losses. Now we need to take care of DePaul.

Welcome to the bright side, Class of 72.

When I saw that Rysheed was starting I knew we had a better chance than with Branch. I knew the Nova game was an anomaly for him and with four guys that can score on the floor the game changes radically for us. But, more importantly, finally utilizing Amar, JDR and Felix effectively so the starters remained fresh showed me that the staff actually reads this site and takes our recommendations seriously.

Could not see or listen to the game hence what a pleasant surprise to turn to this board and " read all about it!"
Thanks to every post - gave a good balanced ebb & flow of the game and outcome! St John's players (apparently even the lousy coach staff contributed to the "W" B) )

Now I should enjoy a pleasant sleep rather than some ptsd-like thing, whatever...
I appreciate all the comments - good for all of us - and to all a good night.

Was also at the game right on the floor.
Agree that St. John's was playing with urgency.
Whitesell was on his feet for stretches and Keady was up a couple of times giving it to the refs - particularly for the goaltending call.

DLo is an entertainer. Some guy was yelling about his tats during a foul shot and he was shaking his head like he couldn't believe the fan was calling him out, and then another time walking toward the fans and staring after he hit a shot and was fouled and playing the role of the heel. DLo struggled through the middle part of that game and still got 20. Hit some big 3's but PC's size really limited him getting into the paint for his midrange games. Also, he is a bit of an actor every time he gets hit. I am enjoying watching him as much as any Redman I've seen in a long time.

Obekpa has some stupid fouls and his offensive game is so far from the NBA. I can't think he's going anywhere. Offensively he needs A LOT of work.

Rysheed played a lot better than he has and this team's going to need him to go anywhere.

PG4 really stepped up and Amar and Felix gave them some decent minutes.

It's your opinion that this win didn't save our season, but a loss and we're 0-4. The guys would have been tight at DePaul, and they would have tried to force the issue.
I believe this win will loosen them up now, and they'll have fun.

So you think what you want and I'll think as I want.

I think you and me agree on one thing though, it's sure great to get that first league win.

Just took a look at the friar board, we are definitely the bad guys of the big east lol.

I think a big part of that is because, when you live in Providence (a town I love, BTW), you can't help but be jealous of NYC.

We can certainly agree on that. I just have a feelling that this team will respond when they have to unlike last year.

That Jordan issue almost certainly cost us a win against Butler and it was a shame, but probably a necessary step. We woudl be a different team if that kid could step up again. I'd like to see him touching the ball closer to the rim like he was at the beginning of they years--offensive boards, iso on smaller guards, etc. He's not a jump shooter.

I though Kris Dunn looked really good for Providence. I'd trade him for Jordan straight-up in a heartbeat. I don't like Jalen Lindsey as much at the two. 6'7 two guards don't really have a shot against smaller, quicker college guards. I guess they really don't have a choice with their lack of guard depth.

I also thought Cooley did us a huge favor by not playing Harris more. Did he forget what Harris did to us last year?

Very nice win by the guys. Especially after PC cut a 17 point lead to 3. Our guys held their composure.

I say after this win we extend Lavin for six years!

Just kidding, guys. And you guys know who you are. ;)

You know what, there has been almost no, I repeat no criticism of THIS team on the board. Certainly not by me but really not by anyone. I really wish you guys were objective enough to actually read posts instead of maintaining an us vs. them mentality. I don't like Lavin as a coach, I certainly like this team. Great win tonight; on to DePaul

Are you kidding me? What about guys saying this team has been poorly constructed? That it is not nearly deep enough because Lavin is lazy? What about the criticism of Jordan that knocks his ability, his focus, and his attitude? Us has thought Dom is very improved and a key. Them has gone back to saying Dom is a bust because during 0-3 he wasn't amazing like he was during 11-1. Us vs. them? US has been saying, enjoy the season, there will be ups and downs. Us has been saying before wait till the recruiting is over before you declare NEXT season a failure. Us has been saying that this team isn't a 14-4 BE team, but it also isn't a 6-12 BE team. Them? Them came out of the woodwork over the past three games to declare this season a failure and called for Lavin's head immediately. You want to say that EVERYONE wants the team to win - I'm in with that statement. But please, PLEASE, don't tell me that no one has criticized this team, because that's a lie. It's not a perfect team, there still isn't a solid playing rotation. They are shallow up front. But they have heart and are fun to watch, and may just eek out a ticket to the dance before it's all over.

You must be talking about another Cooley. Certainly not the best BE coach there is and the one we should be thankful for if he was our coach.

K
Greene Harrison and Dom with huge plays after Prov cut it to 3. Sr leadership. Nice win Johnnies!

And we scored 83 points, nice spread amongst our starters. Nice win Mr. Lavin.

Indeed, and Greene takes a lot of heat on these boards. When Prov cut to 3 he hit a 3 from the corner then had 2 nice takes to the hoop and made the bucket both times . Showed heart.

Am one of those critics who tips my hat to him tonight. Nice game under control, key reason why we won.

You mean like when he raced the ball up court late in the game when the situation called for a long
possession, drove with a man on him, and I screamed, waking up my wife again, "no!!!!!!!!!!", and he made the shot, then "YESSSSSS".

He made the first big shot when Obekpa found him deep in the right corner on a wild drive to the hoop. Great night for PG4. Take the good with the bad, because 1) the good is very very good and 2) because that's all we can do.

Jordan is raw talent. He can make a superb decision to do something, then when it's just about finished, get careless - like his late drive to the hoop that got blocked. He sees and feels things most guards don't - and can create those three on two situations even within a half court offense to make the brilliant pass for an easy layup. But being raw, he will also make bonehead mistakes. I hope the biggest one isn't leaving too early before he develops into a solid round 1 draft pick

1. Congratulations to Harrison on becoming the 3rd all time scorer at SJU.

He has gone from a verry unlikable player to someone who is very easy to root for and without him we would be dead.

2. I am pleasantly surprised....a Very Nice win by the team, i was completely wrong with my prediction going into the game i expected an 8-10 point Friar win. especially the way the lead was built with Chris out on the bench with foul trouble. I thought him picking up 2 that early was the end for us but we shot the 3 well and PC played some very uninspiring basketball.

3. My concern: Phil Greene scored 20 on 7/13 from the floor and 5/8 from 3. As a team we shoot 51% and 58.8 from 3!!! And Providence shoots 14/25 at the line and 39% from the floor.....and they destroyed us on the boards.....i just hope it will not take shooting efforts like this for us when we play better the league's better teams to be in a position to win because if we cool down then for all intents and purposes we will not fair well.

4. The bench, although the contributions werent stat sheet stuffing, they did their part. Albogosachjcdsgjdcsjkcdbjkdwcg played great i thought....he provided the toughness we needed...i would continue giving him more minutes than JDR who can barely keep up running up and down the floor. Branch should be ashamed of himself....last year the tooth ache now this...no toughness at all from him....very disappointed he was a DNP "injury" in our biggest game of the year....it didnt cost us last night thankfully but the idea of him missing games for things like cuts on a finger and a toothache are absurd to me....

5. Lavin invested in an actual dress shirt instead of asking the equipment manager for a sweatshirt and he looked the part of a coach on the sideline for once...job well done by him and i really cant get on him for anything last night....the team played well...they shot the ball well...that will make a coach look good anyday ;)

Onto DePaul now a game we win i think but we have to be careful we lost there last year and a loss on Sunday (a special thank you to the Big East for scheduling this game up against the NFL playoffs) would completely wipe out last night's inspiring performance by the team.

Someone posted on Facebook, who I assume was at the game, that he was embarrassed at the behavior of the Providence fans, specifically about rude comments.

Can anyone on this board who was at the game tell us what went on? If anything at all.
