Providence Game

A excellent WIN! Building the lead and then, withstanding the PC surge was impressive.

Our perimeter shooting stats speak for them selves and won us the game.. Greene, Harrison had great games. Pointer and Jordan had good games.. The Bench gets kudoes for contributing and makes you scratch your head why, they haven't been used before? But, Lavin still gives us many head scratching moments.

Some of my opinions in the game..

1. Pointer must never lead a break downcourt since his handle and himself are out of control.

2.CO must never try a dribble move to the hoop. it's not in his game. Yet or, Ever?

3. Greene shot well in this game. I dislike him having the ball in his hands so much and would give this job to Jordan. Phil wasted a lot of the shot clock throughout the game, with that incessant , unproductive dribble. There were more than a few times DLO wanted the rock out deep and phil had trouble getting it to him, with the FRIAR pressure.

4. Jordan's jumper is a tad below mediocre and he puts it up at crucial times, when DLO is a better percentage. He needs to improve his free throw shooting this year. He was better last year.
His game is just not what his credentials suggested they would be mid way thru his soph season. The potential is there but, no way he's NBA ready now.

5. Lavin decided to wear a decent shirt and perhaps will start a trend, now that the game was won.

6. Branch was sporting a huge Bandage on the sidelines. No telling when he comes back.Jordan has more impact because he's capable of scoring double digits, Branch usually doesn't reach that level.

ALL up, a good win and necessary to prevent the season slipping away. Another must win game against DePaul.

The Challenges remain for Lavin and this team going forward. Will we continue to shoot lights out again? Stay tuned. We must since we are not a good rebounding team offensively especially.

The win doesn't alleviate the body of work, of the Coach or, the ability of this team to get to the NCAA'S. It was a road BE WIN, which is always a plus.

Someone posted on Facebook, who I assume was at the game, that he was embarrassed at the behavior of the Providence fans, specifically about rude comments.

Can anyone on this board who was at the game tell us what went on? If anything at all.

So in other words, the PC fans acted just like they always do. They have always been the most obnoxious and irritating germs in the BE. When you mix part New England sports fanaticism with having to over compensate due to a (very) little brother complex when sharing a region with Uconn and BC, you get Friar fans.

And if we lose, which I expect, please no "It was a bad matchup" excuse. Our front court depth is obviously a huge deficit. In grind it out contests against team with length like PC that hurts. Hopefully Dunn has an off night, but he is really a top tier PG, blessed with quickness, instincts & athleticism.

Jordan was the primary reason why I bought into our guard oriented potential. I thought he could complement Dee on offense & cause havoc on defense. Can he it get it together & give our guards an edge? Better question may be how well has he practiced, assuming he has. :)

Jordan should stay another year his accomplishments on the court thus far does not warrant his move to the next level would be a mistake now but he does have next level skills if he works on his 3 pt shooting. Coacn can only direct him if he makes a bad decision so be it
Do you see us getting blown out by Prov by that I mean 15 pts of more Seems possible
wow good thing you guys werent right!

Enough with the PG4 bashing. Has had his lows this season but that was his 2nd good game in a row.

No, that was his first good game in a row. Versus Nova he shot 6 for 14 from the floor, 2 for 7 from 3 and turned the ball over 3 times. What we can be thankful for after last night's game is that PG4 finally has more points than shots for the year.

Here's a stat I meant to include elsewhere: points per shot

DH 1.4 - (40 % of shots are 3's)
RJ 1.2 - (29 %)
PG .99 - (40 %)
DP 1.3
CO 1.3
JB 1.2

Who should be shooting least? The guy who shoots the most. He's a no trick pony.

And your alternative? anyone else on our bench good enough to step in and drop 20 and providence and hit clutch shot after clutch shot?

What does whether there's an alternative have to do with whether Phil Greene is good at basketball? Oh that's right, nothing.

Well you're killing him for missing shots, and I'm asking you who else would you like to shoot? DLo can't take every shot, Dom struggles to score from outside 10 feet, obekpa and Jordan have struggled. Who on the bench can come in a be a legit scoring threat? Cause whether you like it or not, Greene has scored 16+ on six occasions this season.

So until you find me another scoring option, I am going to live with Greene taking a lot of shots, and also live with him having off nights, because he's shown capability to score on a team where scoring has been a problem at various points throughout the season. Nobody is claiming he is a sharpshooter or a great player, but he is someone that needs to take those shots and make those shots for us to have a chance to win in big east play

Agreed, the lowest class of fans around.

Remember the classic "Ewing can't read this" sign?

They really need to find another dis on opposing players. The can't read stuff is so 80s.

A couple of observations...

1. Phil Greene is a very good shooter when he has his feet set and is in catch and shoot mode. He can take these all day long as far as I'm concerned. What I can't live with are the step back 18 foot jumpers off the dribble. These are a very low % shot for him. Once in a while, he'll get hot and hit a couple of these, but if I'm the defense I'm saying "Thank You!" when he attempts one of these. I'm not sure why he or the coaching staff don't see this.

2. Shooting percentage is directly correlated to the quality of the shots you get. A lot of our three point shots were clean looks. That is going to raise the % of makes. PC had horrible rotations defensively in the first half. When you take open jumpers with your feet set, they often go in. When you take contested shots off the dribble, they don't go in that often. We had good spacing and ball movement. They were slow and out of position. That's why we made shots. It's the exact same formula as when an opponent makes a lot of shots against us.

A great win and a very positive sign with how well we played. With that being said we need to get to 3-3 in big east play. Many predicted a loss to providence and then two wins against MARQ/DePaul, but if we beat prov and then lose to either of those two teams it is just as bad even worse for us. We have work to do. It will be actually fun to take in the duke game knowing we are 3-3 in conference and in good position in the standings.

I'm going to live with him taking a lot of shots too, because I have no choice but to live with it, just like I lived with Bernard Rencher and Jason Buchanan taking a lot of bad shots. It's well outside my sphere of influence. That doesn't mean I'm not going to kill him for it. Because I am. If what you're saying is that Greene is the least worst alternative then sure, maybe he is. Personally I'd clear the side out for Pointer and Jordan 20 times a game because at least it would be entertaining - and by the numbers it'd be more efficient than Greene taking off balance fall away jumpers with his foot on the three point line. As usual YMMV.

Very nice win by the guys. Especially after PC cut a 17 point lead to 3. Our guys held their composure.

I say after this win we extend Lavin for six years!

Just kidding, guys. And you guys know who you are. ;)

You know what, there has been almost no, I repeat no criticism of THIS team on the board. Certainly not by me but really not by anyone. I really wish you guys were objective enough to actually read posts instead of maintaining an us vs. them mentality. I don't like Lavin as a coach, I certainly like this team. Great win tonight; on to DePaul

Are you kidding me? What about guys saying this team has been poorly constructed? That it is not nearly deep enough because Lavin is lazy? What about the criticism of Jordan that knocks his ability, his focus, and his attitude? Us has thought Dom is very improved and a key. Them has gone back to saying Dom is a bust because during 0-3 he wasn't amazing like he was during 11-1. Us vs. them? US has been saying, enjoy the season, there will be ups and downs. Us has been saying before wait till the recruiting is over before you declare NEXT season a failure. Us has been saying that this team isn't a 14-4 BE team, but it also isn't a 6-12 BE team. Them? Them came out of the woodwork over the past three games to declare this season a failure and called for Lavin's head immediately. You want to say that EVERYONE wants the team to win - I'm in with that statement. But please, PLEASE, don't tell me that no one has criticized this team, because that's a lie. It's not a perfect team, there still isn't a solid playing rotation. They are shallow up front. But they have heart and are fun to watch, and may just eek out a ticket to the dance before it's all over.

Please do me a favor and don't respond to my posts. You always misread/misinterpret/ take out of context. etc. I made a mistake in commenting in an absolute, I was really talking for myself. You take every negative comment to heart and feel it your sworn duty to uphold whatever it is you think you are upholding. You take everything negative in a post and comment and ignore anything positive. I will never respond to one of your posts again so please don't waste your time responding to mine. One last comment, I think the praise and respect reflected on the board for this years team FAR outweighs any and all criticism; it has been made clear by most people their criticism is largely of Lavin not this years team. Maybe you should take your own advice and just kick back and enjoy the season; I know I am.

When you singlehandedly stick the dagger into Syracuse as PG4 did, that's a great game no matter what his stat line says.

Look, don't take it to heart. I've liked your posts for years, and you've gotten the brunt of my responses to the anti-Lavin crowd. Like nearly all of us, I don't mind balanced criticism, but the way some guys hate him you would think his wife was their GF at some point and Lavin stole her.

Everybody is happy after a win, but while I welcome everyone is a fan, I wish that the detractors would dial it down a little after we inevitably lose the next winnable game.

Who could forget the little PC tough guy gerbils at MSG each year?! By far, the worst group of trash I've ever seen at MSG. And we have seen much trash (duke, cuse, hall to name a few).

Into the "friar" pan they went.
