Providence Game

If the team continues to play well, everyone will be frothing at the mouth before the next season starts, assuming we come up short for the NCAAs. Certainly closer to being very good than I thought, making finding the few missing pieces in Europe or at the Juco level even more important. Lavin needs to find 2 missing pieces for next season. We would probably all agree on what is required. Got to replace Gift's toughness and strength, and find a proven 3 point threat with some size.

All you MF'ers who didn't give up on this team - Thanks! We are getting rewarded now.
Not many who didn't give up on 'em.

Speak for yourself. There's a BIG difference between getting frustrated and Giving up.

I know folks were frustrated (as, well as they should've been). But I'm also confident in saying some folks gave up.

All the folks who were postingon the Fire Lavin post gave up!!!! All the sarcastic remarks about Lavin saying team will jell in late January or February, what u got to say now. I think some posters just don't like Lavin for whatever reason. Maybe because he ain't kissing some peoples behinds who feel they should have them kissed . Me, I am just happy for the kids and the coaches that they are playing well.

Can we calm down? If we lose to Creighton we will essentially need to run the table to make the tournament. Don't let the slow start and subsequent run fool you, this team will go down as a major disappointment if they do not make the NCAA Tournament and even with this nice run, the tournament is still a huge longshot. And to say people gave up on the team because a hyped team started 0-5 with losses to the likes of DePaul is foolish. I often posted expressing my opinion that Lavin should be gone yet I still made the 2 hour trek out to Queens to see cheer an 0-5 team on against an Ivy League team. Don't confuse frustration with a lack of loyalty.

This team might just be like a thoroughbred that gets out of the gate really slow, and then starts chewing up track only to fall short and finish out of the money. This team may fall short, and as I've said, the Providence and DePaul losses may haunt them. But if they make a great run and fall short, so be it. Some seasons are like that. Whether you lose at the beginning, or lose at the end, it will simply mean they just weren't good enough to make the dance. For now, enjoy their play, which may at this moment be the toughest team in the Big East to put away.

I thought both should have been in during the drought. No way we don't score with Branch running the point for such a long period of time.

I sure hope the fans and students come out and support the team on Sunday night.

Don't want to hear excuses (Its snowing, I have to get up for work in the morning, I watch Downton Abbey on Sunday nights), especially now that the team is playing well.

I'm gonna DVR it so I don't miss it lmao. My Sunday night will be game then stouts and no work for Monday!!!!

Now we broke serve, and are at deuce. HUGE win. Season alive. Payback #1.

Sunday - payback #2

Can we please stop with the stupid tennis analogies?!?!?! This is not tennis....this is basketball!

Tennis analogies are stupid only if you aren't smart enough to figure out how they score. Thanks for your warm comments, though.

No fox sports down here in Mexico so really neat following this thread. Awesome that we're being led by a freshman, 2 Sophomores and a junior.

All you MF'ers who didn't give up on this team - Thanks! We are getting rewarded now.

No Beast, all St Johns fans are being rewarded. We all want to see them win.
Being delusional a month ago doesn't make you a better fan.

Hey Beast, this is the way I expected them to play the whole season, this doesn`t change the fact that they were 0-5. I`m not going to apologize for being hard on them.
This is what I f`ing expected the whole damn season, I knew they were better then that 0-5 B.E. record so that`s right I was fuming.

There`s no looking back though, full f`ing steam ahead. Lets show Creighton what we`re about. 4-6 in the B.E. but keep wanting more. A win against the #12 team in the country will do wonders to get to we`re we want to go.

LETS GO REDMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now on Pointer I get that he shouldn`t have went for the dunk, but why did he get a T? After the foul I thought he was gonna hit him but then he stopped himself and was walking away, the big idiot walked after him and grabbed his arm and Pointer still do do anything.
I know if someone grabs my arm I`m shoving him.

So was it the dunk try that was the T, because serious I didn`t see Dom do anything. Seen Sampson jawing with Delories chest to chest .

Dom kinda flung his arm and elbow at the PC player and almost looked like he was getting ready to throw a punch...but he didn't. How the PC player didn't get a tech but going over and grabbing Pointer's arm as he walked away is beyond me. Should have been a Flagrant one for excessive contact / non basketball play and a double T for actions after the play.

Big road w against decent team. Keep it up and congrats coaches and players. Your fans are applauding your effort. Give Creighton all you have..

At least he played the right six and has done well recently. That is the entire reason we are 5 of 6 recently.
Our "field goal" shooting is up because we have point guards who can drive the lane and pass back out, and they are in the game usually (not tonight with Branch but most recent games.
The exasperation and anger at Lavin was largely justified for his player round robin rotations, which well into the season. The calls for his head came when it became clear he
was not going to give Branch or Rysheed starting time, even majority of playing time, in the point guard spot over Phil G.
That was the core issue behind our lack of assists, our forced outside shots with everyone standing around for the play clock to tick down. I give him credit for adjusting after the game that Phil had to miss, resulting in the point guards, with sporadic help from Harrison, setting the table on offense.
Now he is playing a strong core and there's no need to continue the "everybody gets to bat at least once in the game" Little League nonsense. I was hoping he would give Branch some time during Rysheed's mini-collapse during the Providence run, but he played Pointer at the right times off the bench.
No one is going to agree on every move. A mistake by someone in the game is used as justification for criticizing Lavin. But Lavin finally went with a core group and we began winning. We should have even won another but for the failure to call an obvious foul when Rysheed drove the lane and was whacked good.
In my view, tonight Sanchez got all the time he warranted at the forward spot, especially since this was a night when Sampson was on fire. I'm also glad the key guys are the same ones going to be here next year. We will miss GG and Sanchez but the core has some development time together in key games this year.

2-0 in February.
Huge win...just HUGE. The season has opened back up baby! Providence is a tournament team. The RPI has a chance to catapult into the top 50 with a win against Creighton at MSG. Talk about a high profile game for the conference. #12 Creighton and the best player in the country play in the World's Most Famous Arena in the biggest city in the country against a red-hot St. John's team that McDermott just beat with a last second buzzer-beater. Get ready for some exposure, Big East!

This was a must win and they came through. I wouldn't say Creighton is a must-win, but a loss could render the Nova a must-win. A win over Creighton and it's off to the races.

One final thing...guys, can we please spell our star PG's first name right? It's RYSHEED not Rasheed. It's a little disrespectful and it's freaking February.

CO hitting stride...Jordan is ready...Harrison is Harrison...Sampson is on the cusp of beast mode...GG giving good minutes...Sanchez finally out of the way.

tennis playing thoroughbred named Rocky that likes to kick a soccer ball and wager jai alai.

This was a very big road win against a well coached and talented Friar team.
Bryce Cotton is a terrific player and my only complaint was allowing him to control the Friar offense so effortlessly in the 2nd half.  For a moment I was having a  McDermott flashback.
Rysheed Jordan emerged tonight and Chris Obekpa continued to show many detractors that he has an inside game if given the ball.  Sampson was a beast in the first half but somehow disappeared for most of the second half but through no fault of his own.  Greene played more minutes than I prefer but with Sanchez and Greene playing lesser roles the offense is much improved.
Hopefully the coaches and players learn to not let one opposing player free reign on offense like we did with McDermott and Cotton.  The biggest test of that learning experience comes against Creighton.
It is amazing how every game from here on will be huge and if we play with the defense pressure and do not force needless outside Sanchez shots, we can be a hot team during the Big East tourney.
