Providence Game

I don't comment here often, but I have to speak up tonight. For those of you killing Sir Dom for his play at the end, I ask you to please rewind your DVR's and watch the play again. If PC was going to let him just dribble out the remaining 10+ seconds of the game, why double up and trap him in the corner?

THAT's bush league, that's just poor sportsmanship. that's just childish.

Dom did what he had to do and for once the zebra's got the call right (after a lengthy review)!

2-0 in February.
Huge win...just HUGE. The season has opened back up baby! Providence is a tournament team. The RPI has a chance to catapult into the top 50 with a win against Creighton at MSG. Talk about a high profile game for the conference. #12 Creighton and the best player in the country play in the World's Most Famous Arena in the biggest city in the country against a red-hot St. John's team that McDermott just beat with a last second buzzer-beater. Get ready for some exposure, Big East!

This was a must win and they came through. I wouldn't say Creighton is a must-win, but a loss could render the Nova a must-win. A win over Creighton and it's off to the races.

One final thing...guys, can we please spell our star PG's first name right? It's RYSHEED not Rasheed. It's a little disrespectful and it's freaking February.

CO hitting stride...Jordan is ready...Harrison is Harrison...Sampson is on the cusp of beast mode...GG giving good minutes...Sanchez finally out of the way.
I think Creighton is more important to us because of where we are in the season. We can't lose more than 1 more game and this would give us a signature win and can really build some momentum

Pointer is the biggest ass in red storm history. WTF is he doing

That's harsh. Granted, the kid made a dumb play, but he plays with passion and I don't have a problem with that. "Biggest ass" ever? I don't think so.

Edit: Stupid maybe, but to compare him with Georgetown's Michael Graham -- I hope it was done tongue in check -- is offensive. Graham -- for those of us who remember him -- was the NCAA's all-time goon.

Graham was a dirt bag, as dirty as they come. In fact his roughhouse play led Raferty to criticize Thompsons team's overall classless play. Big John blasted Raf for his criticism of his thugs; attacking his record as a coach at Seton Hall.

Agreed. I wouldn't be shocked to hear he's done some time since leaving G'Town. Thompson asked Graham to leave the school.

Graham against Grady Reynolds would have been a great match-up. Vince McMahon would have made them both rich, signing them for Wrestlemania after their in-game brawl. Not sure as to who would be the face, and who the heel.

Who compared him to graham? pointer has a habit of making bonehead plays and this one takes the cake but it never should have happened. Why did Harrison dribble into the corner and hand him the ball? prov was just letting us run out the clock. Hold it up top and let the clock expire. That whole episode was completely unnecessary.

Who compared him to Graham? Check out page 35 of this thread. Again, I think it was probably (hopefully) done tongue-in-cheek. ... or maybe just out of frustration. Whatever. Bottom line:I have no doubt of the poster's love of St. John's basketball and -- much like Pointer's play -- it may have been a case of passion superseding reason.

Obviously a huge win. Still a bit concerning that we seem to completely lose our motion offense and rely on one on one offense when things get tough. We are so good with dribble drive and pass which opens every one up and is the main reasons behind CO and Sampson having such huge 1st half. We go to clear out offense and every one stands around watching and we have to stop that when the game is on the line or else we'll have to build large leads or else we"ll have trouble winning close games.

It's important and a game we should win. We had them beat in Omaha if not for a bogus offensive foul call on Jordan. Now we get them at home and I expect a win. I hope the bookmakers make Creighton the fave as it'll be more easy money for me. I also hope Lavin employs the same strategy by taking Wragge out of the game. Let McDermott score his pts and we still win

I hope Lavin suspends pointer. That was dumb and classless

Dumb? Yes.

Suspend him? Please!

I'm sure Pointer is getting an earful about not doing dumb things with the game in the bag.

Once I was at an AAU tournament, with our team getting ready to take the court as the prior game finished. With about 20 seconds left and a team up comfortably by 7, the best player on the winning team submarines a kid on the way to the hoop. Flagrant foul. The kid then slams the ball on the floor as the ref calls the foul. T #1. She goes back to the bench as the kid goes to the line all alone. Kicks a chair loudly onto the court. Tech #2. Team gets 6 foul shots plus the ball. Kid makes all six. they get the ball back and scores. Game over. The kid who melted down was the coach's kid. As the game end, the coach screams to the ref. "Hey, shove it up your...' and throws another chair. My all time favorite comeback

Really? Wow.

It's a big game no question. You're right that the biggest impact might be killing/hurting the momentum. I think we probably have to win one game against Creighton or Nova, so that's why I say it's not a must-win. A loss against Creighton really raises the importance of the Nova game! If we lose both, we'd have to win two games in the tournament IMO.

Gtown is a must-win. We both have strong RPI and SOS rankings relative to our respective records, but they have much better quality wins while we have less bad losses. Both teams are in position to make pass Xavier for NCAA tournament berths with strong finishes.

Basketball players pushing each other after the play....stop the presses.

These video reviews of every semi-hard foul have blown the most benign confrontations into big spectacles.
A hard foul to stop a guy from scoring in garbage time, ok. Nothing wrong there. Dom says something about the foul, so does Sampson. Again, none of this bothers me. It's all part of the game.

Refs need to call two fouls and keep the game moving. Nothing either guy did was out of the norm. This stuff happens on every basketball court, from cyo to an old man's-rec league, to HS, to the NBA.

Could not agree more. When they doubled him in the corner and he broke out I said out loud, "now jam it". Dom has nothing to be sorry for.

Dom is a straight up idiot.

I'm sick of his antics.

Usually I'd agree. But I feel as if they were actually defending hard and bit just letting us dribble it out, so why not put it in the hoop if they're over playing in defense. This team needs more of an edge more NYC fight in them, this will help

They were playing hard fouling and I would have gone to the hoop also. This was not a surrender.
Plus that was a hard flagrant foul. Da Rosa also went after Dom and pulled his arm. which brought the T. Dom's swing was probably seen by the refs in the replay and the cause of his T.

Dom is not just any player, though. He has a reputation with officials and for good reason. How many current players in the country have a landed in-game punch on their resume? I'd venture to say it is a single-digit #. He also has about a dozen reviewed calls this season.

Good road win, great first half. I, for one, did not predict it. Hope I am wrong about Creighton as well ;)

Now we broke serve, and are at deuce. HUGE win. Season alive. Payback #1.

Sunday - payback #2

Can we please stop with the stupid tennis analogies?!?!?! This is not tennis....this is basketball!

I think some of Doms fouls can be not so smart but after looking at the play again I didn't have too much of a problem with it

I also am modifying my initial comment. I guess I am prone to jump on him, because he is chippy too often.

I hear ya. Initially I was thinking oh Damn not again. But then after seeing it I had more of a problem with Friar Tuck

Providence is not a tournament team, and we will still need to win the league tournament to go the NCAAs. If we win out and lose in the championship game, then maybe.

A month from now we'll know whether you're right, but I really think you are overrating the league. Nova and Creighton are good, but it wouldn't surprise me if both are gone before the Sweet 16. Xavier may go farther than either of them, if it gets in. Everybody else ranges from mediocre to bad. The A-10 has better teams than the BE and will get more bids.

It is good to see that we are playing better. it seems that Coach may well have been correct in all of his early season quotes about how we would be good at the end. It's a shame it took the team so long to gel, but that can happen when you start a different lineup every game, not to mention some of the other things that may have impeded the progress of the team. Better late than never, I guess.

Me neither. I would like Sanchez to drink whatever Dom does pre-game, so he too can get a little fire in his belly. Nothing wrong with a will to win.

I said he is our Michael Graham because people were killing him for the play. I am the biggest (only?) Sir'Dom fan on this board and I love his toughness. Eff anyone who didn't like the reference...or the play! If they wanted him to dribble it out, they shouldn't have trapped him. Btw, I don't blame the Provo guy for fouling him either. He did what he had to do in that situation. And the Refs called it right.
