Providence Game

A note after re watching the game:

1) Balamou was back behind the bench with the other red shirts, what is up with that that?

We finally got our chemistry, this is the team I use to dream about this past summer. We still have a long way to go but we are starting to look like a team.

Lavin finally has a rotation going, a 9 man rotation realizing that hooper is a liability on D and won't see the floor. Phill has been playing much better, I guess he realized that he is a spot shooter and is now making the extra pass. GG and Sanchez know there roles now . Dom does the little things to win, huge steal at the end of the game, low IQ overall as a player but he brings that hustle man mentality that every team should have. Branch hasn't been committing that many turnovers anymore and he seems to just be playing instead of thinking on the floor. Jordan , Jakarr, and D are our go to guys on O. CO is now getting consistent minutes.

Creighton is due for a loss and we will give it to them on Sunday I am that confident. No team is going to want to play us in the big east tourney. Lets go johnnies ! Lets fu*king get it !!!!!

2-0 in February.
Huge win...just HUGE. The season has opened back up baby! Providence is a tournament team.

Providence is not a tournament team, and we will still need to win the league tournament to go the NCAAs. If we win out and lose in the championship game, then maybe.

A month from now we'll know whether you're right, but I really think you are overrating the league. Nova and Creighton are good, but it wouldn't surprise me if both are gone before the Sweet 16. Xavier may go farther than either of them, if it gets in. Everybody else ranges from mediocre to bad. The A-10 has better teams than the BE and will get more bids.

It is good to see that we are playing better. it seems that Coach may well have been correct in all of his early season quotes about how we would be good at the end. It's a shame it took the team so long to gel, but that can happen when you start a different lineup every game, not to mention some of the other things that may have impeded the progress of the team. Better late than never, I guess.

If we win out, we are in. That's a fact, with a great SOS and RPI, and the committee using a "what have you done for me lately?" system, we would be in. If we win out we are

22-9 (12-6) with solid wins vs Creighton, @ Nova, and at home against Xavier. Tonight was a solid win as well

If we win out, we would be going 11-1 in our last 12 games, rendering us the hottest team in the nation, and would probably get us in the top 25.

I'm not saying I think we will win out, but the thought that we "might" make it if we win out is off based. I think you are under rating the league a little too. Beating Xavier, Gtown, Nova, and Creighton in our last eight are all good wins.

We will see, but I think some of you are still so mad at the 0-5 start you don't realize an at large bid is still very much there for the taking.

Now hopefully they take it.

Yea I saw that to , I think he is back to red shirting that's if your allowed to do that . Anyone have any info on Felix??

You are wrong on both accounts. If the season ended right now, there would be no doubt that Providence is in the NCAA tournament. They are #37 in the RPI, already have 16 wins, and came into the game tonight winning six of their last seven conference games. They still have Depaul and Marquette left to play at home and very winnable road games against SH and Butler (and Xavier to a lesser degree).

St. John's does not have to win the Big East tournament. Even if they lose on game in the regular season they won't even have to win a single BET to earn a berth. If they won the rest of the games and a game or two in the BET, they'd be ranked in the top 25 and would probably be looking at a five or six seed.

Pointer is the biggest ass in red storm history. WTF is he doing

That's harsh. Granted, the kid made a dumb play, but he plays with passion and I don't have a problem with that. "Biggest ass" ever? I don't think so.

Edit: Stupid maybe, but to compare him with Georgetown's Michael Graham -- I hope it was done tongue in check -- is offensive. Graham -- for those of us who remember him -- was the NCAA's all-time goon.

Graham was a dirt bag, as dirty as they come. In fact his roughhouse play led Raferty to criticize Thompsons team's overall classless play. Big John blasted Raf for his criticism of his thugs; attacking his record as a coach at Seton Hall.

Agreed. I wouldn't be shocked to hear he's done some time since leaving G'Town. Thompson asked Graham to leave the school.

Graham against Grady Reynolds would have been a great match-up. Vince McMahon would have made them both rich, signing them for Wrestlemania after their in-game brawl. Not sure as to who would be the face, and who the heel.

Who compared him to graham? pointer has a habit of making bonehead plays and this one takes the cake but it never should have happened. Why did Harrison dribble into the corner and hand him the ball? prov was just letting us run out the clock. Hold it up top and let the clock expire. That whole episode was completely unnecessary.

Who compared him to Graham? Check out page 35 of this thread. Again, I think it was probably (hopefully) done tongue-in-cheek. ... or maybe just out of frustration. Whatever. Bottom line:I have no doubt of the poster's love of St. John's basketball and -- much like Pointer's play -- it may have been a case of passion superseding reason.

I said he is our Michael Graham because people were killing him for the play. I am the biggest (only?) Sir'Dom fan on this board and I love his toughness. Eff anyone who didn't like the reference...or the play! If they wanted him to dribble it out, they shouldn't have trapped him. Btw, I don't blame the Provo guy for fouling him either. He did what he had to do in that situation. And the Refs called it right.

Simplyred, I didn't name you, or slam you (said I assumed your comments were tongue-in-cheek), because I agree with you about Dom's toughness. For the record, you're not the only Pointer fan on this board: I have never said a negative word about him, and whatever his shortcomings are, never will. I've always appreciated his hard work, his willingness to be a role-player, and his passion. And for the record, yes, Dom did go for basket when he should have just held the ball, but, once grabbed from behind, he did not lose his cool despite the double T, which I felt was unwarranted.

If we win out, we are in.

Bingo! Nothing else needs to be said.

Still lots of work ahead, though.

As I said, I don't know if it can be done. But breaking it down, we have three games that should be victories given we already have own against these teams (Marquette, Butler, SHU)

Marquette should be challenging in their own building, but we slaughtered them, at msg, can't see us losing to them.

Then the other five games are all games against teams we have lost too.

Our payback tour started with Providence. We won.

The tour continues with Creighton Sunday night, need a victory.

If we beat Creighton I will be a firm believer this team can make the dance.

Now, we take these one at a time, but wouldn't it be awesome to square it with every team we lost to - GTown, Nova, Creighton, Xavier. Like the line from the Godfather, "Today we start finishing all the family business."

DePaul too!

Great game tonight. I'm officially pumped for Sunday. Just bought tickets and I'm bringing my wife to her first STJ game. She watched Creighton crush Villanova with me, so when I told her we had Creighton at home, she decided she had to come and cheer us on!

C'MON JOHNNIES. MY WIFE MAY ACTUALLY STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT ME WATCHING EVERY GAME IF YOU BEAT CREIGHTON!!!

Solid-waste management. How fitting.

DePaul too!

That's "Today I settle all family business ... so don't tell me you're innocent." Michael to Carlo after the baptism and before Carlo in strangled in the car and kicks out the car windshield.

I got two tickets in Sec 120 for $14 each. Another 14 bucks for Fedex delivery. Not bad at all.

Just finished reading 375 posts. Great win!

Huge win...just HUGE. The season has opened back up baby! Providence is a tournament team. The RPI has a chance to catapult into the top 50 with a win against Creighton at MSG. Talk about a high profile game for the conference. #12 Creighton and the best player in the country play in the World's Most Famous Arena in the biggest city in the country against a red-hot St. John's team that McDermott just beat with a last second buzzer-beater. Get ready for some exposure, Big East!

This was a must win and they came through. I wouldn't say Creighton is a must-win, but a loss could render the Nova a must-win. A win over Creighton and it's off to the races.

One final thing...guys, can we please spell our star PG's first name right? It's RYSHEED not Rasheed. It's a little disrespectful and it's freaking February.

CO hitting stride...Jordan is ready...Harrison is Harrison...Sampson is on the cusp of beast mode...GG giving good minutes...Sanchez finally out of the way.
I think Creighton is more important to us because of where we are in the season. We can't lose more than 1 more game and this would give us a signature win and can really build some momentum

It's a big game no question. You're right that the biggest impact might be killing/hurting the momentum. I think we probably have to win one game against Creighton or Nova, so that's why I say it's not a must-win. A loss against Creighton really raises the importance of the Nova game! If we lose both, we'd have to win two games in the tournament IMO.

Gtown is a must-win. We both have strong RPI and SOS rankings relative to our respective records, but they have much better quality wins while we have less bad losses. Both teams are in position to make pass Xavier for NCAA tournament berths with strong finishes.

If we finish 7-1 then I agree, we`ll need one of the Creighton/Villanova games.
If we go 6-2 then 2 of those 6 wins MUST come against those two.

It`s a bitch playing now with the margin so slim, but they got themselves in this whole. Can they dig themselves out.

Though I am loving this never say die attitude. Maybe tomorrow just relax, and three days of practice.
Defenseively: For the first 36-37 minutes I`d make McDermott beat us, then the last 3-4 minutes make anyone else beat us, just not him.

Well 4-1 since saying I`ll be back in march lol. So I must disappear again, see ya after the Creighton game.

Yea I saw that to , I think he is back to red shirting that's if your allowed to do that . Anyone have any info on Felix??

Supposedly trying to get a redshirt for having to go back to Africa

They must have good reason to think he'll get it between the injury and his mother's illness. Honestly, I'd be shocked if he was granted the redshirt.
