Providence Game

I'm going to assume the fans knocking Lavin on his dress code never got to see a game with Looie walking the sidelines in one of his sweaters in 84-85.

Looie had earned the right to wear whatever he wanted by that point.

So, if Looie came out there in Run DMC attire (what the group were wearing at that particular time), then it would've been okay because he earned the right, huh? Please!

Lavin is dressed rather nicely, but he doesn't don a tie. But he hasn't earned the right not to wear a tie, huh? I could see if Lavin was coming out there looking like something the cat drug in.

Rollie Massimino wore ties, but he looked sloppy to me. Even, moreso once the game was a few minutes old.

Bob Knight looked tacky to me. His stuff didn't even particularly fit right in my eyes. He sort of looked like a slob once he went to wearing sweaters and nylon tops. But I'm guessing he could wear it because he earned it, right? Tacky is tacky.

Give it a rest.

I can only imagine what the other boards are thinking and saying when they come here and see us arguing over Lavin's dress!

Agree, it's time to give this argument a rest.

Arguing over Lavin's clothing is misdirected. Few people here know that coach Keady does not wear underwear or that Tony Chiles tee shirts are XXXL or that Ron Linfonte wears Jockey underwear, etc. Lavin's problem in terms of his look is that he is trying to comb his hair like Elvis!

Guess Gene Keady "Commando" Bobble Head Night is a possibility then 72.

I think his circa 1989 hairstyle is much worse than his wardrobe decisions. Gel did wonders to mask that terrible hair, but now is the time to cut it shorter.
Lavin must be doing something right if this is what people are criticizing him about.

After that candid disclosure, i'll never look at the bench in the same manner. In fact I might never look at the bench again. I'm just curious how you know this. Maybe Lavin's ties are all at your house. :)

Thanks! :furious: That is now an image that I will have a hard time deleting from my mind! ;)

Looie had earned the right to wear whatever he wanted by that point. He took his first St John's team to the NCAA tourney in the 60's. By 1984, he was taking St John’s to the Final 4.

Lavin, by contrast, has yet to produce anywhere remotely near that kind of success for St John’s. Yet he feels free to dress more casually than 99.9% of coaches out there. He must believe his job is safe—or has been told it is. As Desco pointed out, did he stop wearing a tie at UCLA? No. There’s a reason for that.

Disgraceful. All the more reason to hire Tim Gunn as our next HC. Not so good at the x's and o's, or knowing where the 3-point line is, but oh, what a wardrobe!

We're on a roll, have a huge game coming up on Sunday, and this is what posters are focusing on? Ridiculous.

Funny you should mention Tim Gunn--the Georgetown blog, Casual Hoya, actually awarded Lavin a Tim Gunn fashion award last year!

"Tim Gunn Fashion Award:
Would it kill Steve Lavin to wear a fucking tie? It's bad enough that we don't have a dimmer switch at Verizon to class up the joint, but Lavin's tooling around the sideline in a suit with no tie made it appear that he was just coming from a casual dinner and his poofy hair was nearly walk-of-shame quality. Contrast that to our JT3, who was resplendent in a gray suit and dressed to the 9s as usual. We win!"

Tie. no tie. who cares, 5 of last 6, 4 of last 5 in the Big East with a rematch game on Sunday against the only lost during that stretch at home.
Let focus on the game and not what our coach is wearing. This is a sports forum not a fashion one. You want fashion go to fashion week.

Turner was pushing Cooley for Big East coach of the year yet in the last 2 min and the lead down to 5 he never double teamed Harrelson when SJU was taking the ball out of bounds. Seem to play right into our hands the way he was shooting foul shots.

I hated it when Harrelson got the ball, Pete Rose ran over him.

Didn't know that "resplendent" was a synonym for "rumpled looking."

He's winning but people need to gripe anyway.

I hated it when Harrelson got the ball, Pete Rose ran over him.

I remember Buddy saying after that game, "I hit his fist with my eye."

Rose ran over everyone. See Ray Fosse.... http://m.mlb.com/video/v5766041/rose-crashes-into-fosse-at-the-plate[/quote]

I was at that game in 73...Harrelson was my favorite player. For my 50th birthday, two of my buddies from SJU gave me a Bud Harrelson autographed baseball and a Bill Bradley autographed basketball (Dollar Bill was my favorite player when I was a kid). SJU friends are the best.

I was a kid and already a Yankees fan but I still watched Mets games. Harrelson looked like Don Knotts and Pete Rose was big and burly. I don't know if it's true but later on I heard they were actually friends off the field.

I think Harrelson was maybe 150-155, Rose was about 205. Rose knew only one way to play the game - full tilt. He did drop his shoulder though and barreled into Harrelson, who instinctively went after Rose after getting wiped out. Wayne Garrett, at third raced from third to defend Harrelson, and it was a full blown fracas for about 5 minutes.
