Providence Game

Really impressive win. If we beat Creighton, I may just eat some crow and forgive Lavin for messing with the rotations for so long. Although I'm not mentally there yet.
Are you at least ready to forgive him for what he wears during games ? :)

LOL! Yes. I guess I’m old school, but he’s racked up Marquette and Providence victories since my wardrobe rant, so I’m just going to chalk that little tangent up to emotional exhaustion.

Actually, people are going to role their eyes, but I have a problem with what he wears too. I think it's an insult to SJU.
When Lavin was at UCLA he would never dare not wear a tie to games, he had too much respect for coach Wooden and the program. Plus he knew his job was never safe there, he had to always keep the bosses happy.
Now, he's at SJU and he thinks he's in a safe seat and the standards are relaxed. That's a load of crap.

Most HS basketball players have to wear a tie on game days, why the hell can't he?

I'd expect it from some of the old farts like me but I took you to be a youngster? Who wears ties anymore? Most lawyers, bankers and teachers/profs don't' wear ties anymore but some jock head coach should? Heck my dad only wears a tie half the time and he's getting photographed. Events he used to go to all formal businessy he now shows up in golf shirts and Stony Brook garb. ;) I mean it's been 15 years since I wore a tie to work each day, now it's about 5 days per year. I don't think I know anyone who still wears to a tie to their daily jobs and many are execs/upper management. Who else is in that boat? Now if the shoes weren't a statement I'd get behind you on that but he's given up on the sneakers except on special days, right?

Unfortunately I wear a tie usually 4 days a week. But if I'm meeting clients out casually I don't wear one most of the time depending on who I'm meeting if it's after the market close.

I'm assuming you work in finance Maher? In some shape or form. If you were giving an interview on Bloomberg or CNBC would you wear a tie?

There's a reason Lebron changes into a tie after every game. Gus Johnson and Raf are wearing a tie. Hell, some of our fans even wear ties to games. (I always see this guy with a red tie and yankee hat, some of you must know him)

I just think it's a respect and professionalism thing. And if he were at UCLA coach wouldn't be so cavalier about it. That's all.
yeah I work in finance. Depends on if it was a friday or depends really on the type of meeting or event for me. My picture was in Ny Magazine a few weeks ago and for that I wore a tie :)

I hope it was strategically placed. I didn't know NY Magazine did those kind of spreads. Congragulations!!

I hope it was not related to any Bernie Madoff with my money issue!
Haa. I'm the polar opposite of that guy. :)

It was finance related but good PR for me

I'm going to assume the fans knocking Lavin on his dress code never got to see a game with Looie walking the sidelines in one of his sweaters in 84-85.

Looie had earned the right to wear whatever he wanted by that point. He took his first St John's team to the NCAA tourney in the 60's. By 1984, he was taking St John’s to the Final 4.

Lavin, by contrast, has yet to produce anywhere remotely near that kind of success for St John’s. Yet he feels free to dress more casually than 99.9% of coaches out there. He must believe his job is safe—or has been told it is. As Desco pointed out, did he stop wearing a tie at UCLA? No. There’s a reason for that.

Do you own a tie shop? Lol

Lol, I should! There is another option why Lavin isn't wearing a tie: he knows he can just shove St John's and return to his broadcasting career whenever he feels like it. At which point, you can rest assured he'll have the tie on again.

So, if Looie came out there in Run DMC attire (what the group were wearing at that particular time), then it would've been okay because he earned the right, huh? Please!

Lavin is dressed rather nicely, but he doesn't don a tie. But he hasn't earned the right not to wear a tie, huh? I could see if Lavin was coming out there looking like something the cat drug in.

Rollie Massimino wore ties, but he looked sloppy to me. Even, moreso once the game was a few minutes old.

Bob Knight looked tacky to me. His stuff didn't even particularly fit right in my eyes. He sort of looked like a slob once he went to wearing sweaters and nylon tops. But I'm guessing he could wear it because he earned it, right? Tacky is tacky.

Give it a rest.

Pardon my indignation, but what the hell does someone's winning percentage have to do with his right to wear what he wants to wear. If the school had a dress code that he was violating, or if his attire was so outrageously unacceptable by societal standards, I'm sure it would have been addressed. That he doesn't meet P Simmons' standards doesn't seem to be the appropriate measuring stick.

Please! I cannot friggin believe that a discussion on Lavin's dress has gotten serious. God!! He wears a white shirt, and a dress suit. I can't even dignify this by typing another word.

I hate wearing ties. Fortunately I don't have to wear one for work. I only wear one for weddings and Bar Mitzvahs. Obviously I have no problem w Lavin not wearing a tie. I think posters are nitpicking. You want to criticize Lavin ,criticize him for taking so long to find the starting lineup. I think he looks dapper.

They are not “my” standards. As an example, here’s a Tweet from the editor of the Villanova basketball site, VUHoops.com:

Chris Lane ‏@chrisjjlane Jan 11
“Steve Lavin, please wear a tie. That is all. Signed, everyone ever.”

Nor is this a Villanova standard. Does Buzz Williams strike you as the kind of guy who wants to wear a tie? Lavin is an outlier.

But from here on in, I’ll stick to Lavin's actual X&O coaching prowess. Coincidentally, he’s an outlier there, too.

Who gives a crap what someone from Villanova tweets, and whether or not Buzz Williams strikes you as someone who doesn't wanna wear a tie?! Buzz Williams may actually wanna wear a tie. Have you asked him? Then, again Marquette may suggest that he does wear a tie.

You were blatantly contradictive, and then come back with some weak BS.

.

Just turned on the Nets game. J Kidd is not wearing a tie. That bastard!

Dude is FOS. He noticed his argument holds little weight, as he clearly contradicted himself. Then, he decides to move the basketball goals, in order to "win" the argument. LOL

I can't do anything, but chuckle.

Just turned on the Nets game. J Kidd is not wearing a tie. That bastard!

And if and when Lavin similarly gets to #2 in our conference, I'll be the first to say he deserves to go tie-less.

I try not to be rude but you do realize that your argument is stupid, don't you? First of all, it is a fashion trend. You may like it or you may not. Second, if it is "inappropriate" then one's record has nothing to do with whether it is acceptable or not. If he wins enough will it be ok to coach in his underwear?

As for the Nova guy, stfu and enjoy your coach.

What I realize as patently stupid is people who cannot see anyone else's POV without resorting to personal insults.

Disgraceful. All the more reason to hire Tim Gunn as our next HC. Not so good at the x's and o's, or knowing where the 3-point line is, but oh, what a wardrobe!

We're on a roll, have a huge game coming up on Sunday, and this is what posters are focusing on? Ridiculous.

I think his circa 1989 hairstyle is much worse than his wardrobe decisions. Gel did wonders to mask that terrible hair, but now is the time to cut it shorter.

What's even stupider than that is you trying to tell another grown man what he should wear.
