Providence Game

I guess it's a good thing that on the day after a big game, people are only complaining about what the coach was wearing.

If Cooley was our coach, they'd be complaining about his scars!

Those are not scars. I have it on good authority that he has an Italian barber and if you look closely you will see that his hair is actually sculptured to look like the boot of Italy and the islands of Sicily and Sardegna. I think it is quite a fashion statement and I consider him a honorary Italian because of it! Forza Cooley!

Really impressive win. If we beat Creighton, I may just eat some crow and forgive Lavin for messing with the rotations for so long. Although I'm not mentally there yet.
Are you at least ready to forgive him for what he wears during games ? :)

LOL! Yes. I guess I’m old school, but he’s racked up Marquette and Providence victories since my wardrobe rant, so I’m just going to chalk that little tangent up to emotional exhaustion.

Actually, people are going to role their eyes, but I have a problem with what he wears too. I think it's an insult to SJU.
When Lavin was at UCLA he would never dare not wear a tie to games, he had too much respect for coach Wooden and the program. Plus he knew his job was never safe there, he had to always keep the bosses happy.
Now, he's at SJU and he thinks he's in a safe seat and the standards are relaxed. That's a load of crap.

Most HS basketball players have to wear a tie on game days, why the hell can't he?

I'd expect it from some of the old farts like me but I took you to be a youngster? Who wears ties anymore? Most lawyers, bankers and teachers/profs don't' wear ties anymore but some jock head coach should? Heck my dad only wears a tie half the time and he's getting photographed. Events he used to go to all formal businessy he now shows up in golf shirts and Stony Brook garb. ;) I mean it's been 15 years since I wore a tie to work each day, now it's about 5 days per year. I don't think I know anyone who still wears to a tie to their daily jobs and many are execs/upper management. Who else is in that boat? Now if the shoes weren't a statement I'd get behind you on that but he's given up on the sneakers except on special days, right?

Unfortunately I wear a tie usually 4 days a week. But if I'm meeting clients out casually I don't wear one most of the time depending on who I'm meeting if it's after the market close.

I'm assuming you work in finance Maher? In some shape or form. If you were giving an interview on Bloomberg or CNBC would you wear a tie?

There's a reason Lebron changes into a tie after every game. Gus Johnson and Raf are wearing a tie. Hell, some of our fans even wear ties to games. (I always see this guy with a red tie and yankee hat, some of you must know him)

I just think it's a respect and professionalism thing. And if he were at UCLA coach wouldn't be so cavalier about it. That's all.

I do take full responsibility for bringing up this admittedly offbeat and pretty much irrelevant topic in the first place. But, since we’re back on the subject…

Why then, do 99.9% of D1 coaches still wear ties? Huggins with his tracksuit, Brey with his turtlenecks… those guys are the rare exception and they have taken their teams to multiple tourney appearances. Knight is a legend and I wonder, did Looie start wearing the sweaters before or after he had experienced success here?

Out of curiosity I did a quick Twitter search to see if any one else is talking about it.

“Steve Lavin, please wear a tie. That is all. Signed, everyone ever.”

Ok-so their coach is the best-dressed guy in D1 ball. But still....Desco and I are not alone in this world :cheer:

Everyone ever? How dramatic of the moron.

Why not be a rare exception? What allows them to be different but not Lavin? Honest question here. Not trying to bust balls.

Of the 99 problems this program has what our coach wears might appear at #90.

I think when you’ve proven yourself with your team you can take some liberties with the dress code. Huggins has taken WVU to numerous NCAA tourneys (including a Final 4) and Brey as well. Lavin has not “earned” that yet, so to speak. Just my opinion (along with my new pal Chris at VUhoops.com LOL)

And Huggins proved himself at Cincy his first coaching stop? Where he worse the same stuff as now. Brey also. So Lavin changed his style his record at UCLA as much as we all might have issues with him both us and UCLA fans was successful. No way around that. There are 340 something coaches in D1. I'm sure there are plenty other lesser coaches with their dressing styles.

This is probably true. But in the annals of ridiculous things that have been discussed on st johns message boards, I don't think this even rates in the top 100. We've debated things far more absurd than this.
Please provide a discussion more absurd than this. It's been good for a laugh, especially Austour's comments, but this is pretty absurd.

Hopefully Lavin wears a tie on Fox show with Regis Philbin today and we can all rest easy. Sheez!

THIS THREAD IS STUPID!!!

All game threads are

Oh wait you werent referring to the game thread.

Blame Maher. He hijacked the thread bringing up P Simmon's old post. Usually Maher hijacks threads about food or world travels. This time a little different :)

I think he needs more hair gel. Back in the day, he wore more hair gel.

I can remember 15 years ago when I used to wear hair gel every day but who wears hair gel anymore? My dad used to wear hair gel to support his combover. Now he's au naturel bald. Even the Wolves of Wall Street, the Ad exec bohos and the aspiring actor/waiters aren't wearing hair gel anymore! I mean get real Paul. How old are you? ;)

The only hair gel most of our users need is Rogaine.

Speak for yourself dude, I've just switched from hair gel to forming cream. Medium hold, medium shine, if you must know. ;)

Actually I didn't think Lavin had that much to do with it. He's already displayed a complete lack of ability to win the close ones. I just think the team is tired of losing and finally playing like it. The coaches have been way more active lately and all Steve has to do is get out of the way. We looked more talented than Marquette and PC and managed to hold onto to the lead and exclude the coach who would have blown it given the chance. Against PC there was no absurd Hooper insertion this time and that's all it took. I think they realize if they had held McD to thirty five the game was theirs. I expect a much different outcome this time and Lavin will have little to do with it. The kids know what to do and I don't expect them to lose until over-confidence finally sets in. An ironic but almost inevitable consequence of win streaks. It beats the coach screwing up any day though.

Closing lanes on the GW bridge has been Lavin's biggest offense so far this year.
