Providence Game 2

@CBarcaSTJ: Dom Pointer had 20 points, 7 boards, 5 assists, 1 steal and 1 block. Huge day for the senior. #SJUBB

MVP !!! What an unbelievable year Dom is having. Have we ever had a kid improve more from one year to the next?

Just got back from the game. The Mrs and I visited with our son for a while and then went out for dinner, hence the late hour.

What a very satisfying game to see, for all the reasons already stated. I like the way SL used our bench today. Glad to see JDLR get a bucket. And I believe Amar will only get better.

Surprising to hear about the Friar fans. The ones sitting around me, and there were a few, were fine. Cheering on their team, but no nasty comments.

Was a little nervous about the way my day started. As I was waiting for my train on the platform, a strong wind gust came, blew my St. John's hat off my head, and directly onto the track just as the train was approaching. All I could think of was, "Oh no! A bad omen!" But, fortunately, was not to be.

Now on to Butler!

Id nominate David Cain in his last year, but Sir Dom's transformation has been wonderful to watch.

And cleary Dwight Hardy

Or have these type of comments interleaved with nasty stuff about him when we lose.

One more thing that stuck out about today was the refs. They were tremendous with the exception of one questionable call on Sir'Dom for going over the back when he never touched the guy. When I saw Jim Burr on the floor I thought we would be in for a long day but they really let the kids play.

Two great calls fkaSJU- but David Cain's, more than anyone else that I can think of, turnaround was truly unbelievable . After three seasons as a virtual non-entity and showing no promise he became a star point guard and led us almost singlehandedly to the tournament. It took a really good Arkansas team to put us out in the round of thirty-two in a close game.

Cain just didn't play for 3 years.so I don't consider it a turnaround. Lou just didn't play him

I think the 2years Karr was here Jamed up Doms game. I wish I could explain better. Kinda like Doms space to operate was taken. Did Karr help anyone's game? Dom turned out to be the better player.

I don't think that Kar helped anyone's game nor did he care about anyone else's game but his. To think that we lost Rico Gathers because we re-recruited Kar. If we had Rico Gathers right now with his rebounding ability along with CO and Dom with their shot blocking we would still be a top 15 team.

You're right Dee, Cain did not play much for Lou. However I remember that any time he did hit the floor he had that deer in the headlights look. I don't think anyone could have predicted that he would be anywhere close to being that good. In retrospect Cain made Mahoney look like a great coach that season and that in itself was a remarkable achievement.

@JasonKingBR: Baylor forward Rico Gathers has 115 offensive rebounds this season, 53 more any other player in the Big 12 Conference.

I know exactly what you are saying. Sampson did that to a lot of guys...nobody more than Dom. He forced Dom into a role playing 25 feet from the basket, and it really just left us with two combo forwards better suited for the four but emotionally invested at the three.

Dom has had an incredible year. It makes you think "what if" about last season. What if he was given this role and Sampson bought in entirely?

Was at the game , just got a chance to post. Nice win Dom and Phil were great and quick hands and some key blocks . But Harrison hits a 3 to put STJ up 10 with about 4 30 left, crowd gets loud and Lavin calls a TO? I didn't get that one, but we were all pumped up, revenge on Butler next !

Can't say enough about how phenomenal Dom was. Not just in terms of locking down Henton, but also playing within himself. Wasn't out of control off the bounce much at all. He's turned into a very good player and I just wish he had one more season to really work on that jumper and he could be a legit NBA prospect. Hard to see it right now at his size without a semi-consistent jumper though.

I wish we had another year with Dom. We got cheated last season with Sampson forcing him into a role he wasn't suited for. It was a completely lost season.

When he gives us a monster effort, we can play with and possibly beat anyone.

Even with the questionable shot, think he's got a chance to stick with a team as a 2G off the bench.

Sampson coached last year?
