Providence Game 2

Happy Birthday to SJU radio play by play man, John Minko who celebrated his birthday on Saturday.

As I have posted before I used to coach against John for years; he is one of the truly good ones

I thought there was some collegiality among coaches where they didn't go around saying other coaches suck? Maybe I'm just old school. Well not old school as in Old School Redman, more like Mike K, not Miguel K. Catch the drift?

Well, this one is easy; you see I don't consider Lavin a coach, to me he is a con man. In my world, people need to work at their job to earn the associated title. Catch the drift?

I've said it before, and I got loads of crap for it from posters who completely took my post out of context, but I'll say it again. If Lavin won a national championship here, I don't think you'd still be satisfied. I can just see the post now. "What the hell took him so long?" ;)

Look, Beast busts my chops constantly and my replies are sometimes over the top busting his back. I don't like or respect Lavin and have reasons (not personal at all) for feeling the way I do. I get the impression you support him and I respect that; we just disagree. If you don't respect my opinion fine but I will continue to express my feelings just as you do yours.

lmfao oh yeah Beast, you really got me there. I'm Miguel. Just surprised I'm not Joe3 too, and any of those other ones that was banned on here Beast.
You're a funny one.

No I don't believe you are Joe3. I actually have a pretty good handle on Joe3, and what set him off and his favorite non-basketball subjects. If anything you are closer to Miguel, but honestly, I could care less. Just that it's pretty clear you've been around here for a while - longer than this user id.

Yep, here since those Artest teams, I guess I couldn't have been a non member and just read the site for all these years huh?
The thing with me is I won't sugar coat anything and will say it as I see it. Yeah, I know that I'll be harassed on here for having any kind of negative opinion again Lavin, but I'm fine with that.

Before we discuss what fan reaction would be after winning a national championship, perhaps we should make the tournament.

That's fair. And I get your replies are intentionally over the top. Sometimes, anyway. ;-)

As a matter of fact, some of your criticism of Lavin is, IMO, justified. And I agree with it. He is not a great in game coach; he did ease up on his recruiting for whatever reason, I don't get his timeouts when we seem to be on a roll. But at the same time, I do think he is due credit, when credit is due. That's all I'm saying.

And I'm glad you will continue to express your feelings. As will I. That's what makes this site so awesome. But we do agree on one thing: we both want a winning St. John's team!

Thank you for making my case that my post was completely taken out of context.

So you consider yourself more of a coach than Lavin?

Please see my reply to Tony in Faifield above. But as long as you ask, it is not whether or not I think I would be a better coach than he is, as I have posted before in various threads on many subjects, I believe real honest effort is the only thing you can expect out of a person; there are many outside factors that play into results. And IMO, through discussions on this board but mostly from people I know in the basketball community I do not feel Lavin has given that effort to this school and this program. That is my opinion and I don't come by it lightly. I cannot respect someone who takes the money and doesn't give 100% to earn that money. I think he did a disservice to the current players by taking time off from recruiting and we have seen the results of that laziness this year especially. He did an excellent job recruiting coming out of the shoot only to have it start blowing up by not doing his due diligence when sending several of them to summer school to try to ensure their eligibility. Since then it has been one thing after another. Recruiting non D1 BE players and then feeding a load of BS about their abilities. Troubles with Harrison, which turned out to be a legitimate feather in his cap; troubles with Jordan, which has not. The fiasco with Sampson last year playing for himself. The continued lazy recruiting which resulted in ADR and Thomas, neither of whom became eligible. All this adds up, IMO, to a man without a plan, no idea how to build a program through hard work but rather a schmoozer who was only going to go as far as his personality took him. Well, as far as I can see his one good class has kept his head above water but as Michael Ray said, "the ship be sinking" for next year. Now, one can come back with the recruits still being bandied about on the board but I don't see any of them as having strong SJU leans, maybe I am wrong, we shall see. But even so, IMO, we should cut ties now; he has shown me very little of real substance.
