Providence Game 2

On a subject of small personal pride, as a freshman I christened Harrison Threeangelo. The nickname faded for the more popular Dlo. At the game on Saturday after Harrison drained his second three, one of the guys seated behind me declared to his friends, "Threeangelo is back!".

Indeed.

He's a special, special player -- and he's evolved into a special person as well (under Steve Lavin, I might add) -- and we should appreciate every single minute he plays for the remainder of his college career.

Redken, I can name at least 10 guys posting here that wouldn't see it that way.
That is the sad truth.

Cain's senior season was one of my all time favorites because it was so unexpected. Not just the transformation of Cain into one of the all time clutch players but the season. You can't blame LC. Every time Cain came in he turned the ball over. It came to the point where Cain was waiting on the floor to check in and I'd start the countdown to the turnover. It was pretty much automatic and you didn't have to wait long at all. If he was looking over his shoulder that was his problem not the coach. That was also a different game when Point Guard meant a little more than it does today. If you were ready you were mentally tough and ready to lead. He wasn't.

Penetrate and dish, penetrate and dish. Never saw a better penetrating PG in a St. John's uniform. Sadly it was all limited to one year.

Buchanan cost us the Duke victory in the NCAA game as he forgot that is was Boo Harvey that got us there. He took shots down the stretch that he should not have taken and Cain would not have. However the point is moot just like Bob Kelly having a bad game against Georgia in the Tournament loss that perhaps Kevin Williams would have allowed us to win. Looie's late insertion was just that too late. Kevin who Jordan reminds me of ,ended up playing 6 or so years in the NBA while Kelly disappeared.

Right, one TO and yanked. That is not how a coach instills confidence in his player especially a pt g. Should have been allowed to play thru some mistakes especially during cupcake portion of schedule as Buchanon was not a pure pt.

@CBarcaSTJ: Dom Pointer had 20 points, 7 boards, 5 assists, 1 steal and 1 block. Huge day for the senior. #SJUBB

MVP !!! What an unbelievable year Dom is having. Have we ever had a kid improve more from one year to the next?

Hmm. And I thought Lavin was a total disaster when it came to developing talent.

Hmmm; you have a guy very highly rated come in as a freshman and he finally becomes a consistent contributor as a senior; not exactly coaching HOF stuff IMO.

There are lots of highly rated freshmen who come into programs and struggle; the list is endless. And many of them -- Duke's Crawford Palmer and Georgetown's Sam Jefferson and Grady Mateen, as well as our own Marcus Broadnax immediately come to mind -- never develop over the course of their college careers. But Dom has developed into an outstanding player -- and Phil and CO have developed as well -- and you cannot not give the coaching staff credit for that.

P.S. No one's talking about "HOF stuff." And since you brought it up, exactly which future Hall of Famers do you think are looking to coach St. John's?

You are certainly right but the truth is I have a lot of trouble giving Lavin credit for anything. I have little or no respect for him amd I'm sure it shows. But I do stand corrected by your premise and examples.

Logen you had better brace yourself because if Dom winds up on an NBA roster next year the accolades for Lav getting him to the NBA are going to start pouring in.

Accolades? If Dom makes a NBA roster? Many NBA teams today and scanning the roster of teams with horrible losing records, show them stocked with, essentially, NBADL talent..The business side of team ownership has caused many teams to jettison high priced players for league minimum contracts \as part of a business model. Sixers, KNICKS, kINGS, Minn, etc

While I agree Dom has provided more this season than all his previous seasons combined, I doubt Lavin has contributed much to his better play. Whitsell maybe, since they have him positioned better in the circle, where he has some range and also him going against other team power forwards for whom he is too quick. HE is a great leaper, in the class of a Willie Glass from our glory days.

His handle is still suspect, especially on the break, where he thinks he needs to go coast to coast every time. He doesn't. He also is not much of a rebounder, on either board . But, there is no doubt he has put points on the board and picked up some of the scoring load, as Harrison recuperates.

So, making a NBA roster these days isn't the path to Millionaire status it once was. i hope he can make a living playing BB FOR A WHILE. Better he use his education to advantage in some field. I'm assuming as a 4 year player he will graduate with a degree in something.Kudoes to him for studying for 4 years. This assuming he doesn't pack it in after the season in March. Al la SAMSPON last year.

At least the mention of Whitesell could be taken as positive, maybe.

Whether it's the head coach himself or members his handpicked staff who are responsible for a player's development, it's the head coach who takes the credit (or the blame) since he heads the program. You might recall that Hall of Famer Al McGuire never even attended practice sessions; just about everything instructional was communicated through his staff ... but he did oversee it, just as Lavin is overseeing what Whitsell et al. are doing.

Everybody throws all the blame for everything that goes wrong on the coach and as soon as one player makes a big jump from one year to the next it is Whitesell not Lavin that deserves credit?

Read JSJ's link to post article before you talk of making money with a college degree unless it's in technology Half the graduates have trouble finding jobs that REQUIRE a degree.
he is packing it in as a senior and has his degree according to Lavin.

Happy Birthday to SJU radio play by play man, John Minko who celebrated his birthday on Saturday.

As I have posted before I used to coach against John for years; he is one of the truly good ones

I believe the minimum salary in the NBA is $500,000 yearly. That is the top 1% of wage earners. The problem is many players spend the money as fast as they make it ,instead of investing some.

I thought there was some collegiality among coaches where they didn't go around saying other coaches suck? Maybe I'm just old school. Well not old school as in Old School Redman, more like Mike K, not Miguel K. Catch the drift?

Well, this one is easy; you see I don't consider Lavin a coach, to me he is a con man. In my world, people need to work at their job to earn the associated title. Catch the drift?

I've said it before, and I got loads of crap for it from posters who completely took my post out of context, but I'll say it again. If Lavin won a national championship here, I don't think you'd still be satisfied. I can just see the post now. "What the hell took him so long?" ;)

No I don't believe you are Joe3. I actually have a pretty good handle on Joe3, and what set him off and his favorite non-basketball subjects. If anything you are closer to Miguel, but honestly, I could care less. Just that it's pretty clear you've been around here for a while - longer than this user id.

You may think he is a con man, and i'd say that is your prerogative to think so. Hoever, I'd say that at face value, Lavin is the son of a guy who is recognized as the greatest player ever in the Bay area, and as such grew up around basketball. He worked for Gene KEady a six time national coach of the year, a no nonsense guy, who i've met and who I do not think would be associated with a con man for even a second. Then Lavin goes and gets himself hired by the most successful program in NCAA history in terms of champsionships. Of course he got fired, because in Westwood, anyone not named Wooden gets fired there. As a con man, he also fooled John Wooden himself, who not only befriended him, but chastised him when necessary as part of his maturation as a coach.

So if you ask me his qualifications vs. coaching against John Minko, I would say you are the one a little over the top in your vitriol against Lavin, whereas I've never heard him bash one of his players, opposing player, or coach.
