Providence Game 2

One more thing that stuck out about today was the refs. They were tremendous with the exception of one questionable call on Sir'Dom for going over the back when he never touched the guy. When I saw Jim Burr on the floor I thought we would be in for a long day but they really let the kids play.

Truth is both sides think they're in for a long day when they see Jim Burr on the floor. :(

Can't say enough about how phenomenal Dom was. Not just in terms of locking down Henton, but also playing within himself. Wasn't out of control off the bounce much at all. He's turned into a very good player and I just wish he had one more season to really work on that jumper and he could be a legit NBA prospect. Hard to see it right now at his size without a semi-consistent jumper though.

I wish we had another year with Dom. We got cheated last season with Sampson forcing him into a role he wasn't suited for. It was a completely lost season.

When he gives us a monster effort, we can play with and possibly beat anyone.

Sampson coached last year?

I am more accepting of Lavin than most, but I do take him to task on his lack of defining the roles of his forwards. Sanchez, Sampson, and Pointer averaged 25 mpg in our the front court and none of them had a clear role on offense. Gravity is pretty strong, but it is nothing like the pull of the three point line to a big man with carte blanche.

Better coach and staff would have figured out how to play Dom and Sampson/Sanchez together. Or all three. Sampson was very comfortable shooting mid-range jumpers and a creative coach would have had Dom at times operating from the foul line with Sampson on the baseline/mid-wing, and forced Dom to crash the boards instead of constantly lingering 25 feet from the hoop.

Two great calls fkaSJU- but David Cain's, more than anyone else that I can think of, turnaround was truly unbelievable . After three seasons as a virtual non-entity and showing no promise he became a star point guard and led us almost singlehandedly to the tournament. It took a really good Arkansas team to put us out in the round of thirty-two in a close game.
Cain just didn't play for 3 years.so I don't consider it a turnaround. Lou just didn't play him

I don't think that's true at all. For three years I remember getting the shakes every time Can went in the game. He was awful and then Sr year, boom!

You know, I didn't want to say anything but that was my recollection also. So much so that during his excellent senior year, I just felt game to game that he was playing over his head and expected a return to earth. In the end his improvement was legitimate and I'd have to look at rosters year to year to see if it was more a matter of just clearing space for him to run the team that precipitated his emergence.

That's because he was always looking over his shoulder because after his first mistake he would be yanked. Lou was not one to use his bench. You really think Cain could be a terrible player for 3 years and a miracle improvement during one off season made him have a terrific senior season. No, the talent was there but Lou didn't get it out of him. Saw Cain in a high school all star game and he was fastest baseline to baseline player I ever saw.

Just got back from the game. One Providence loudmouth who was quiet all game started talking sh*t with about 2 mins to go, chating "NIT, NIT". It was dumb enough because Providence is no lock themselves for a bid, but when no one reacted, started yelling, "Where's Harrison's brother?" Then when no one reacted started yelling, "In jail for 25 years." At that point I turned around to look for him but he had shut up. Still steamed, and should have said something.

Greg was in my row again. Good guy. Nice game.

Prov fans should be happy. Worst fans in the BE.

Of course it took Cuse and Uconn leaving for them to take the mantle.

What a bunch of a**holes PC fans are. It was unbelievable where I was. Four drunk idiots happen to find my nice quiet row at halftime almost ruined the game for me.

I spoke to Cain outside the Garden after a game and he told me he was going to transfer. He was killing it in practice and never got run, typical of Looie. I told him to hang in their and I believe Mahoney must have clued him in that he was in his corner.Hence his blow out senior year. I believe Riley loved him when he tried for the pros. Just too small/

@CBarcaSTJ: Dom Pointer had 20 points, 7 boards, 5 assists, 1 steal and 1 block. Huge day for the senior. #SJUBB

MVP !!! What an unbelievable year Dom is having. Have we ever had a kid improve more from one year to the next?

Hmm. And I thought Lavin was a total disaster when it came to developing talent.

In looking at this replay, I thought I saw Zendon, who's been regularly sitting right behind the bench most of this season, standing with the team during a TO. Was I seeing things? Maybe it's been explained in another thread, but what exactly his connection to the program, if any?

That's him,
Volunteer assistant coach.
BTW, great shot of new president Bobby G cheering on the guys in the second half.

Hmmm; you have a guy very highly rated come in as a freshman and he finally becomes a consistent contributor as a senior; not exactly coaching HOF stuff IMO.

Logen you had better brace yourself because if Dom winds up on an NBA roster next year the accolades for Lav getting him to the NBA are going to start pouring in.

There are lots of highly rated freshmen who come into programs and struggle; the list is endless. And many of them -- Duke's Crawford Palmer and Georgetown's Sam Jefferson and Grady Mateen, as well as our own Marcus Broadnax immediately come to mind -- never develop over the course of their college careers. But Dom has developed into an outstanding player -- and Phil and CO have developed as well -- and you cannot not give the coaching staff credit for that.

P.S. No one's talking about "HOF stuff." And since you brought it up, exactly which future Hall of Famers do you think are looking to coach St. John's?

agree 100%...i liked Cain even in 1st 3 years...yes, he made misatkes but yiu could tell he had PG instincts that Buchanan simply did not

On a subject of small personal pride, as a freshman I christened Harrison Threeangelo. The nickname faded for the more popular Dlo. At the game on Saturday after Harrison drained his second three, one of the guys seated behind me declared to his friends, "Threeangelo is back!".

Indeed.

Indeed.

He's a special, special player -- and he's evolved into a special person as well (under Steve Lavin, I might add) -- and we should appreciate every single minute he plays for the remainder of his college career.
