Has there been an explanation of why the whistle was blown? Was it because the ref didn't see the clock start or because he thought Figgy was out of bounds? If the former, the ensuing out of bounds play should have been from the same spot, if the latter, more than .8 seconds should have come off the clock.
It seems like everyone is expecting perfection. They outplayed a pretty goad Hall team for 36 minutes on the road, then reverted to bad habits, as tired teams do, and had 2 foul shots roll off the rim. A 10 point lead isn't the big deal it used to be. The 3 point shot changed that. One critique is that our lack of bigs that pound down low and lack of drives to the hoops left us still in the one and one in the last minute. Need to draw more fouls and be in the double bonus. Hall did a great job keeping Ponds in front of them, something our guards dont do enough of on defense. Ponds apparent level of exhaustion, evidenced by his shots being short and his failure to drive more, was a factor. Sometimes I get the feeling that all the advice and critiques Ponds got playing for NBA scouts and execs this summer has screwed with his head.
Yup, the SH transfer from Sacred Heart, McKnight, really played Ponds extremely well, very quick player who stayed in front of him consistently.

Hi All,

I am a long time lurker (over a decade) who has never posted before. Thank you all for making this site such a valuable resource. I am posting for the first time today because I am so bothered about the end of last night's game- not the bad call but the lie that followed.

Here is the letter I wrote to Val Ackerman, Stu Jackson, and John Cahill this morning.

I feel what happened in last night's game is important and both should never happen again, and must be honestly and publicly explained by the Big East. After thinking over the issue for a night I actually feel it is a far bigger issue than a simple bad call. I don't really care that Michael Stephens blew the original play. That happens and is part of sports and being a fan (although that game was hugely important for St John's), but I am deeply offended he lied about it to cover up his mistake. I care that the lie was accepted by the other refs, and that in their official statement after the game the Big East regurgitated the lie with 0 critical thought.

First, I think we can all acknowledge the ref(s) lied. To debunk the absurdity of the lie takes 10 seconds of critical thinking. If my 7 year-old told me a lie that bad I would tell him his lie is too stupid to be believed, and that the thought-process behind the lie isn't worthy of a 4 year old.

But here is the really important part. I am sick of being lied to. Our biggest companies lie to us all the time, and most importantly our President and the government he leads lie to us all the time. This has to stop and I refuse to become unfazed by constant lies. The truth is important and should be defended, even if it means making a referee look bad. Admitting lies and correcting the narrative is important, not so we can get a better understanding of how a basketball team got screwed, but in and of itself. The truth should be worked for at all times, whether you are a tech company, the President, an athletic conference, a citizen, or a referee. It should also never be too late to tell the truth.

So what do I want? I don't want anybody fired/suspended. They are probably good refs who screwed up and acted like morons because they knew they blew it. I guess it happens, and I hope they learn from their mistakes. But I do want the mistakes admitted. From the first bad whistle to the lies and cover-up what happened should be publicly explained. I want refs to know (and for that matter everybody in the entire world) that mistakes are OK but lies are not. I want the Big East to set an example of honesty and integrity, to be better than our society where lies and lying have become a way of life.

Dixon was suppose to be the 3rd guard off the Bench , giving Ponds and Heron some relief . He played 3 minutes ! Not a lot for a guy who transferred with a big rep as a scorer and player . In addition to missing the front end of 2 one and ones late, I thought Clark trying to go Coast to Coast on a ill advised drive was just as costly as the missed free throws . Marvin ‘s penchant for fouling out of games is inexcusable for such a experienced player . Especially when many are the ineffective reach in foul that rarely stops the opponent shot . Coaching ? This loss was on the Players . What was it ? 8 or nine empty trips down court in the last 10 minutes ? And , Ponds , Heron and Simon need to look for Figgy more than they did . He was a fresh player at game end and they weren’t .

Yea my dad said that as it happened, he walked and passed it to a guy who was illegally subbed in, on a possession they shouldn’t of even had. Crazy to think about

I have said this since he started doing it but Ponds taking a half off and not shooting is not right. He just needs to balance it out better.

I believe Dixon played a few minutes due to his porous defense allowing his man to easily drive by him twice.

As we've all said, a very disappointing loss and a game we should have won from several perspectives. However, I don't buy that this loss will hurt us with pundits who didn't have us ranked due to schedule. We lost on a last second shot to a very good team who also knocked off Kentucky on a last second shot. If anything, last night confirmed we are a very good team despite our schedule.
Time to move on and get ready for Marquette and Gtown.

Ponds shot 0-3 in the first half and 2-10 in the second half. Just wasn’t his night.

Heron scored 15 pts in the first half and only 4 in the second. He missed a few shots in the second half that he hit in the first. His back to back offensive fouls were a killer. I like that he was aggressive and not settling for outside shots but those were two big possessions.

Guarded Powell three times. Didn't put hand up and hit a three. Drive right by him for layup. Fouled him third time.
Sorry borderline BE player. Def not on defensive end.

Painful loss. One for the Ages in a game we should’ve won. Here’s hoping the guys shake it off, learn from their mistakes, learn to not play lousy for long stretches to allow bad calls to doom them.
Take it into your hands guys.
Beat Marquette!

It is also time for him to shorten his three point shot. He's way behind the line. I've also praised him for his point guard assists but also criticized him for passing up short jumpers and even layups. He's our leading scorer, let's start acting like one.

Win the next 3, and last night's loss will probably be in most folks rear view. It won't be easy winning the next 3 games, but I still think it's doable.

Personally, I think we're going to win the next two games. Currently, the one at 'Nova has me on the fence.

Ponds has shown he can get by anyone. I still believe that. Do you think it was just great defense, or a combo of very good defense and a drained Ponds with no legs under him?

Speaking of bad decisions with the Hall closing the gap both Simon and Ponds took ugly shots off their drives to the basket.

Let's file this L away and kick their teeth in when next we meet.

Ponds was getting to where he wanted for the most part in the first half. Although, smartly, he was deferring to his teammates. I thought the McKnight kid played sound defense, as he was also receiving help on many possessions.

I think it was a combination of all the above, and Ponds also playing nonchalantly.

Think Mullin should have been on the refs about that call rather than taking it so calmly also do you think Keita will be a factor next time we meet
