Clock not starting was just a bs excuse:

1 - Why would the ref that blew the whistle watch the clock instead of the play 2 feet from him?

2 - That play happened so quickly that there was no way he would have seen the clock not moving.

He thought LJ stepped out and that’s why he blew the whistle.

The refs literally stole the game from st John's. Maybe they were scared of the home town fans. What this does is verify in the minds of the voters that our record was only the reflection of a weak schedule. It also damages chances for an NCAA bid. Those refs should be fired

Steere at game & now living on campus. Needed to stop grousing about the disappointment lol

Marquette win at home is quite important on several levels. Don’t want to dig a hole to start season in such a competitive league.

Lastly, my buddy Monte is far from a “dick” lol

Every road game is a battle. I thought the team did very well in a hostile environment in their first road game of the season. They ran out of gas the last 8 minutes, which isn't surprising considering the guards have to gang rebound and defend guys bigger and stronger all game. We go 8 deep with 6 guards, 2 of whom are lucky to be 6' and 175 soaking wet. They exerted a ton of energy to build up and maintain a lead for 36 minutes. They out shot Hall from the line and from 3. Anyone watching could see that Seton Hall played much more intense D the last 8 minutes, taking advantage of our tired legs. If you think it's fun battling guys a lot bigger than you, trying having one lean on you all night long. They did enough to win, and had the win stolen from them. The delay gave Hall a chance to draw up a new play. I'm still not sure why the players, assuming they did, were allowed to go to their bench and talk to their coaches, and I'm not sure why they didn't have to inbound under their basket. If it's because Figgy stepped out at a different point, then why have replay if it can't be overturned? Just an awful way to lose for a team that so needed a good start.

Ponds had a game like Starks did in Knicks playoffs He takes responsibility for the L and says he will be ready for the next game

Morning after and I still feel like that was the worst St. John’s loss in years. This one hurts in so many ways.

We blew it and then the refs did too. It’s kind of an unexplainable feeling. When your team blows a game and you know you kinda deserve to lose, but then they actually made a play to get the win despite that, but then the refs took that from us anyway.

I wish I could just hibernate until the Marquette game because I feel like I won’t feel better until we get a win

And as for the back and forth going on between posters who blame the team and coaching for making it close and the posters blaming the ref, as Amase said, it’s simply BOTH.

I was at the game last night and I walked out furious at the team because we played horrible ball down the stretch. I was sitting across from the St. John’s bench, so I couldn’t see the LJ play at all. Walking out, I was furious at the players for blowing the lead and playing too much 1 on 1.

But after getting home and seeing the replays of the play, it is perfectly fair for everyone to be angry at the officiating. That is inexcusable.

Like I said last night, it’s kind of karma for the VCU ending I suppose, but that doesn’t make it suck any less

I’m with you Jack. I’ve been a fan since 1979 and have seen a lot but this one hurt. I woke up 5 times last night , just couldn’t sleep. Horrible way to lose a game. Yes, Ponds and Heron both missed one and one’s. Yes, we fell apart the last 8 minutes, but , we made the play to win the game. All this does is legitimize all the opinions of the pundits in college basketball who criticized us for the week schedule. The only way it goes away is if we beat Marquette.

Feeling same, nice post Jack

Outside of the final score, I really enjoyed the game. It was my first trip to the Prudential Center and I liked the arena more then I expected. Before the game we ate at a brick oven pizza place by the arena and while the service was game day slow the pizza was good. Seton Hall did a nice job getting the crowd into it and the closed upper level gave it the feel of a true sellout. It was also nice to sit with a group of St. John’s fans and I wanted to thank NYC Redmen and his friend for getting me affordable tickets to the sold out game. I didn’t get a chance to talk to many of the group as the game was so riveting but overall it was a nice experience for my family. I am struggling with the loss. I didn’t sleep well like others and have lost some of the high that a 13-0 start would have brought to the Marquette game, but we all get to celebrate the New Year tomorrow night and hopefully for those who make it out to CA that night will see a win and much of the pain will go away.

Calls like we saw have been part of basketball since it's founding. You sucked it up and moved on;that's sportsmanship. However, since the availability of filmed replay, all obvious and clear mistakes like this one have been overturned.. The league owes the fans an explanation of why our lying eyes, and those of the HOF announcer, cannot be trusted in this one case. What is the BE's interpretation of the play and re-play we all saw? Was what we and the announcers were shown not made available to the refs? What was the leagues basis for his final call? The league owes me an explanation

It seems like everyone is expecting perfection. They outplayed a pretty goad Hall team for 36 minutes on the road, then reverted to bad habits, as tired teams do, and had 2 foul shots roll off the rim. A 10 point lead isn't the big deal it used to be. The 3 point shot changed that. One critique is that our lack of bigs that pound down low and lack of drives to the hoops left us still in the one and one in the last minute. Need to draw more fouls and be in the double bonus. Hall did a great job keeping Ponds in front of them, something our guards dont do enough of on defense. Ponds apparent level of exhaustion, evidenced by his shots being short and his failure to drive more, was a factor. Sometimes I get the feeling that all the advice and critiques Ponds got playing for NBA scouts and execs this summer has screwed with his head.

Going to reiterate that Seton Hall are trash. We have 0 interior defense and it showed last night which kept them in the game when we should have stepped on their throats. Hope the team turns the page quicker than us fans!

Again great post Jack. I've been a fan for nearly 40 yrs. all t of memorable games on both sides of the ledger

This game hurts now need to find a way to win Tuesday

I obviously couldn't watch the game, but it sucks to give (and get taken away) a win. I'm actually glad I couldn't watch the game and it took place in the middle of my nighttime.

What stings more is we have lost 7 of 9 to Seton Hall. Williard has done a lot better than I expected.

I get that a tired team played poorly in the last 10 minutes, maybe 14 by my view. However, that does not excuse the fact that LJF legitimately deflected and stole the inbounds pass with 3.9 seconds to go and the ref stopped play. Then both officials look extensively at a replay and awarded what amounts to a do over to SH. No one can justify that decision, except to say the clock never started in the home gym with the home team down 1 with 3.9 seconds left to play. St. John’s ball after the steal no matter who stopped play or why. This wasn’t just a bad call. It was a huge mistake by the ref to stop the clock in the first place, and then made worse by giving the ball back and to SH for another crack at it. Just covering his own ass. He gets demoted today if I’m commissioner. That was horrendous. And I’d say it if he did it in our favor too.

The out of bounds play cannot be reviewed and reversed because there needs to be two players involved for the review to be permissible. Why they made that a stipulation, no clue. Don’t worry about getting it right, don’t worry about the integrity of the game, just worry about the PR. So just make up some bullshit about the clock and move on. As a fan, it sucks big time: hopefully the coaches and players are looking in their respective mirrors and realizing it was their fault entirely it came to that.

I thought the issue was since he blew the whistle thinking LJ was out when he really wasn't everything that happened after the whistle is moot. It cannot be reviewed. Because in essence it was dead ball as soon as he blew the whistle.

Obviously he should have never blown the whistle then let the play go forward. Assuming Heron got possession and either dribbled out the clock or got fouled, once play stopped they can go back to the inbounds play and review to make sure it was a clean steal and save. If not you give the ball back to SHU and put 3.1 on the clock and do the inbounds. But obviously it would have been a clean steal and save and then would have been that.

The best tweet was Rothstein. SJU played terrible down the stretch (a combination of no depth especially up front and so no easy way to get baskets and give up way too many second chances) and SHU made some big shots. But the blown call/lack of review/lack of an explanation was an abominiation.
