Game to game it is hard for me to predict how this team will perform. I headed into this game with trepidation and then when I arrived at the Garden and heard Heron was not playing I was extremely concerned about our prospects of winning.
Then the game started and we burst out of the gate and went up 28 to 5. Most importantly Shamorie was playing really well, Clark was hitting threes and not accumulating fouls and Simon was shutting down Powell with stifling defense. Additionally Seton Hall was turning the ball over at an alarming rate and could not hit a three pointer. From there they changed defenses and went to a zone press and tried to work their way back in as they had in the first matchup.
The surprising difference last night from the first matchup was the effective use of players who had not been contributing all that much previously. It was one of the big reasons we did not run out of gas, were able to rebuff their late run and seal the deal.
Sedee Keita was hurt and did not play on December 29th but was absolutely terrific last night. He battled on the interior strongly (blocked 4 shots), defended the perimeter on switches really well, made a couple of open shots, grabbed some big rebounds, made great decisions with the ball and did not accumulate fouls at all in 25 valuable minutes. I think with a year of rust from sitting out and the early season knee injury slowing his progress we had not gotten to see the best of him yet. If last night is any indication there will be some really significant upside moments to look forward to from him in the future.
Marcellus Earlington was also a presence in eleven effective minutes. He blocked three shots and defended really well, grabbed a couple of rebounds, showed strength on the interior, displayed Big East level of athleticism and skill and fit right in to the team concept and flow. It is refreshing to watch him finally emerge from being glued to the pine to getting meaningful court time and validating his abilities to be a rotation contributor here now and in the future.
Lastly Greg Williams Jr. was really good. He displayed a very high level of athleticism, blocked three shots, handled the ball well and played the best defense he has all season during sixteen significant minutes of court time. Williams is another who has a big upside and will hopefully be a presence in the program for years to come. He has shown flashes previously, but I thought last night was his best sustained moments on the floor this season.
Hopefully the bench's contributions will give the coach more confidence to call on them down the road, so that they can help us to finish off the season in style.
