(POST GAME) (MSG) Connecticut, Sun., Feb. 13, 12 Noon, FOX

I bet that very few of you in a manic depressive state have stopped to consider that we are playing without Posh who had been our best player most of the season.

Injuries are part of the game for certain but Posh at 100% gets us at least 1 win vs UCONN or Nova IMO.

It is what it is.

A  time out was used when smith got trapped under the basket.     Could have used it
But, we made the basket despite 1.3 seconds on clock. So, not optimal but at least we made something out of it

I can’t wait for this F—king season to end!!!!!

Why is that? Looking forward to next season?   Freud would have had a ball analyzing us St. John's fans. No matter how bad things get, we come back for more disappointment the next game, and the next season, all with irrational hope that things are getting better.

It’s on the coach to have an effective 3-point defense.
Not his fault on the missed bunnies.
Missed free throws are something that can and should have been fixed at this point in the season.
I’ve been critical of coach Anderson’s in-game coaching, but I think he has been more effective of late.
These guys look so close, but for a few pieces.

How can you call Mullin days the Good ole days?  Mullin hire was a terrible experiment gone wrong.  Just a different nightmare.

Just thinking back to Mullin's 3rd year...and those great wins vs. Duke & Nova.

Good ole days.

You can forgive poor shooting, some games it’s just not your day. But I’ve never seen someone pickup their dribble more than Smith.

In the face of any pressure he stops his dribble and pivots around looking for help. A byproduct of Posh’s absence for sure but  he killed whatever rhythm we had at times.
I’ve never seen anyone jog back on defense after screwing up in the front court more than him.

They are deficient in talent.  With Posh out and opponents keying on Julius and him struggling, there is just not a reliable third guy.  Other teams have better players three through eight.  Period.  I guess it could have been wheeler, but unfortunately it did not develop earlier this season that way.

I thought it was a pretty enjoyable/hard fought game to watch and there were runs by both teams. I don't think this had anything to do with coaching but a slightly better UCONN team and a team in St. John's that can't win a close one because they don't have a go to player when you need one. After watching the game I agree we probably would have lost with Posh just as we probably would have lost to Pitt with Champ. It has just been that kind of season. We have six more games before the Big East Tournament. Hopefully we can win a few games. Hopefully Posh will get healthy soon. This team isn't very good but I think its a little better then its record. Lets finish strong.

You must be a crisis counselor.

No - I just have been watching almost every game for the last twenty plus years since the Northern Arizona NCAA win. That is after having watched almost every game for 15 plus years before. There were a lot of disappointing losses during those 15 plus years but enough good times to offset them. These last twenty years have had some exciting one offs, like the big wins Lavin's first year. The Ponds games where he willed us to win and a few other fun games and players to watch. But for the most part it is the same old same old. I wasn't expecting to win this game. Of course when we went up 7, I thought there was a chance because I am a St. John's fan but I wasn't surprised by the ending. So at this point if we play a competitive game and win a few that is all I am going to expect. Unfortunately I had to give up my season tickets this year for health reasons but am hoping to be back next year because except for a bad back from CA, I think you get good entertainment for the cost. Anyway if we win the opening night of the BET, I hope to attend on Thursday.

That Northern Arizona game was a real slog

Champ actually had a double double but no one noticed.

Champ had an opportunity to make a play that might well have won the game and passed it up. That play was not a missed shot. It was when he got the ball low in the post, early in the second half, singled up on Martin who has 3 fouls. And instead of taking the ball at Martin for a score or hopefully Martin's 4th foul, he held the ball until Whaley (I think) came over to defend him and protect Martin (after which Champ passed the ball).

That play was a microcosm of Julian's struggles this year. He either failed to recognize the situation and what it called for from him, or it took him too long to process the information, or he just didn't have the necessary aggression.

Needless to say the failure to pick up that foul on Martin led to about 12 more points from him on four 3s and cost us the game. There were other contributing factors but the team played well enough to win and that was just an egregious error IMO.
One of those potential turn in momentum opportunities, well  done! Huge difference if Martin has to sit as well as a less skilled defender taking his place to guard JC.

I think it's fair to assume that we win with Posh, as others have said, but our problem all along has been our lack of quality depth. Especially the lack of secondary ball handler. So real tough to even partially absorb the loss of Posh, on both ends, especially against a good team.

Ding, Ding, Ding

Here are some sobering stats:

1. We scored 5 points in the last 7:46 of the game
2. We had a late scoring drought of 5:46, turning a 7 point lead into a 4 point deficit
3. We went 7 for 13 from the foul line
4. We shot 33% from the field for the game
5. We missed 19 of 31 attempted layups

Our record against Quad I opponents is now 1-9

We win both with Posh

Basically you are saying we could have lost by 20

We really missed Posh.  Smith and Wusu handling the ball late is cringeworthy.

We snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. The St. johns way nowadays.

Feel like missed layups we’re a wash. Free throw shooting hurt.. Plain and simple, we have no killers on this team.  Guys that want to rise to the moment. Champ needs to want it down the stretch. Cole/Martin are those guys for UConn.

it’s now all about prep and health for big east tournament.

Actually Champagnie had a triple double; points, rebounds and bone head plays. Forced Shots, missed passes to open teammates, and poor defense all count as bone head plays.
