I bet that very few of you in a manic depressive state have stopped to consider that we are playing without Posh who had been our best player most of the season.

Injuries are part of the game for certain but Posh at 100% gets us at least 1 win vs UCONN or Nova IMO.

It is what it is.
We win both with Posh

St. John's has played 3 or 4 games where the opponent was missing a key player, or had some players playing hurt.  Especially during the pandemic, you have to be able to win, especially at home, with an important piece missing. I'm plain out of excuses for this team. The refs, the injuries, the full moon, whatever.  Some teams find a way through clutch play and execution. Some find a way to lose. The effort is there, but the smart and timely play is missing.  No other way to put it.

Let me qualify, we should have won without Posh. I believe we definitely win with Posh. No excuses. I am not all that impressed with UCONN. Good team, play hard not a juggernaut.

We have 3 players that any Big east team would want as important players. Not enough.

A poster on here said before the game that we should take it to the basket and try to get their bigs in foul trouble. How did that work out? UConn had at least 14 blocks today. We tried that the first time we played them with the same results. What is it they say (and I paraphrase). The definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over expecting different results.

The players played hard.

Another moral victory ..... Rah- Rah- Rah !!!!!

That was absolutely the correct strategy. Just the wrong guys taking it to the hoop. Actually was working but we didn’t take advantage. When Sanogo went out, we should have gone to Soriano down low. Let them have to work. He’s not Jabaar but bigger than anyone they had especially with Sanogo out. We opted for small ball with a team that does not shoot well nor make layups. Play inside out and maybe we foul someone out or get some open looks on the perimeter.

I want to know what the plan was at the end of the game? We had 12
seconds . They have to have champagne take that last shot for 3

The plan at the end of the game is the same plan as the first Anderson game. Work the ball around and whoever feels they have an open shot take it. Nothing has changed in three years.

On a positive note:  Soriano Has progressed well.

Now I can’t tell if this is sarcastic. Cause 1, I think he definitely has progressed, but 2, today he killed us. Martin hit 2 of those 3s in his face. Fumbled a pass for a layup. Didn’t come up with the rebounds we needed late.

You must have especially liked the move where at 6'11 and right under the basket he put the ball on the floor and bounced it over his head. /media/kunena/emoticons/wink.png

It’s on the coach to have an effective 3-point defense.
Not his fault on the missed bunnies.
Missed free throws are something that can and should have been fixed at this point in the season.
I’ve been critical of coach Anderson’s in-game coaching, but I think he has been more effective of late.
These guys look so close, but for a few pieces.

Absolutely correct

I agree with Lawmanfan: I despise UCONN! Letting them back in the Big East was really annoying. (a mistake IMHO)

I think that is why today's loss upset me so much. We could have and maybe should have beaten them twice this season. The lack of the box out on Sanogo at the end of the first game and the erroneous foul today called against Mathis, that wound up sending Cole to the line instead of turning the ball back over to us made my blood boil.

Perhaps I am too emotional about all of this, but I was looking forward to attending this game all week and was derailed by a Covid positive yesterday. I think my neighbors must have thought someone was being murdered in my apartment when I screamed when Champagnie bricked the front end of that one and one that should have led to tying the game at 59.

I still love the team, the coach, the players, and the program but it is definitely frustrating to constantly be saying if this or if that after losses. That said, I am still watching and rooting for a strong end to the season.

BTW, the below post by MarkRedman touched on many of the relevant stats that defined today's loss.

MarkRedman wrote: Here are some sobering stats:
1. We scored 5 points in the last 7:46 of the game
2. We had a late scoring drought of 5:46, turning a 7 point lead into a 4 point deficit
3. We went 7 for 13 from the foul line
4. We shot 33% from the field for the game
5. We missed 19 of 31 attempted layups

Our record against Quad I opponents is now 1-9

The end of game was a tough spot. It required setting the defense up for the inbound play (decision was to double Cole and leave the inbounder unguarded, which was fine except Cole got the ball anyway), instruct to foul, and then put in the options for down 1 or 2 or down 3 depending on how that played out. The right guy took the right shot at the end, under the circumstances.

My consistent critique of Anderson is halfcourt and crunch time play design and execution, but he didn't do a terrible job in that spot.

The most frustrating thing to me was that we let Sanogo and Martin play something like the last 17 minutes of the game with 3 fouls each. I don't know if that's on the coach or the players (other than the Julian mistake when he had an opportunity to pick up #4 on Martin, which had me tearing my few remaining hairs out when it happened, and it wound up biting us in the rear). But it isn't the sign of a team with a high basketball IQ.

In fairness the PG is usually the brains of your on floor operation and Posh and Pinzon are both out, but we have other guys who should be better at analyzing and executing even given the occasional deficiencies in tactical coaching.

No use crying over spilled milk, I guess. This is just going to be one of those "always a bridesmaid" seasons and hopefully we return enough of this core and add a couple of impact players to get married next year.

And at the same time, he was underutilized today. As we (you, I and many others) have said, he should not be switching on perimeter (unreasonable expectation). He should have been in the game when Sanogo was in FT as an inside out focal point.

Its  so silly for so many to day well if we had Posh we'd win today , beat Nova etc.

Love the optimism, but there are so many fans who live in fantasy land.
