(POST GAME) (MSG) Connecticut, Sun., Feb. 13, 12 Noon, FOX

Haven't read this thread and don't intend to, but I'll just say this game went exactly how I expected it to.

I really believe that we lose many close games because, when the chips are down, we do not collectively as a team have a very high basketball IQ and make a lot of unforced errors and/or use poor judgment.

Agree 100%. And we don’t have guys who are particularly good at putting the ball in the basket. Who on this teams best skill is going to get their own shot? No one. Well it might be Smiths best skill but he hasn’t been able to do it at this level.
Smith is not close to a one on one player especially at this level (lacks quickness).

I agree. But that is his game.

Then, he probably should have stayed at Vermont.

Not only are the defenders much quicker here, but they're also probably 2 or 3 inches taller, across the board.  Double whammy for a player like that.

Specifically in the half court set, lack of a sophisticated offensive plan puts the players at a disadvantage. If you don’t beat your man off the dribble, it’s prayer city.

Just back from the game which heightened my anxiety.  Good thing about noon start-plenty of time for brunch after--needed those unlimited bloodies.

Posh Is God--supremely missed

Champ does look like BE POY/First teamer

Mathis finally got--NO threes (and he made his FT's)

The opposite is true for Nova and Duke, makes a big difference in close games.

This is divorced from reality. You must not be watching the same games. We have among the best assists to FG percentage in the conference.

Biggest difference to me this year is julian doesn't have the swagger of a get on my back and I'll carry the team type of player this year
He doesnt have the ability to do that.  He can knocks shots down when hes open but thats about it.  You cant give him the ball and get out of the way and he will score.  He has 0 ability to create seperation or beat anyone off the dribble.  He was singled up on Sonoga at one point and had to pass it because he couldnt beat him.  Anyone top player should be licking their chops getting sonoga one on one on the perimeter.

Getting on him for stuff like “not wanting it” is wrong.  He does want it.  Hes just not capable of it.

Again, as I watched this game, I never really felt we would win.  The shooting percentages (FG, 3PT, FT) are such that it is a miracle we were competitive.   I did see good effort from the kids, but the team assembled is flawed.

This sounds trite but we need better players.  Everyone is blue in the face with coaching, free throws, the press, missed layups, etc.  I get it.  Always have and I am right there with you. But...we need better players.  It’s actually pretty simple.

Crowd was great today.  Probably 60-40 st johns and nearly all game outcheered uconn fans.

I met a grad student from sju who bought tix next to mine who said his dad is a big supporter of sju and was friends with Belson.  Nice guy

I am sorry, but playing a home conference game in front of a 60-40 crowd should not be acceptable.  I agree that St. John's fans were great today, but so were the UConn fans.  The strong "Let's Go Huskies" chant in the closing minutes was embarrassing.  It can't feel good for our guys and it's something a recruit should never witness.

If we have any self respect, next year we will move this game to UBS or CA.  We need to stop checking our pride at the door for money.  Move the game back to MSG when we're winning and can attract enough fans to flip the dynamic.

Clearly we are not watching the same games. Rushed, forced, low percentage shots in the half court set has been the norm. That assists to FG% includes transition baskets off turnovers, which is the only thing keeping us in games.

I get your point JF, but IMO moving the game out of MSG because we're fearful of losing is not the solution. Putting a better team on the court and kicking UCONN's butt is the solution.

You may be watching but you’re not seeing. We get plenty of good unforced shots and cuts to the basket.

The crowds have been great all year.  Maybe not in quantity, but certainly in quality.

I'm sure some of that is people just being happy at being able to go to events again, but also, the games have either been victories, or close late, except for Kansas, which was not part of the season ticket anyway.

The only games where we were not competitive in were Kansas (and even that was a 3 point game midway through the second half), and the road games at Creighton and Villanova.

Unfortunately, we just haven't won many of the competitive ones.

So play fewer games at MSG. That should be great for recruiting …

Today reminded me how much I dislike UConn and their fans

MSG is a great recruiting tool for big time recruits but At the mid 3* level Anderson generally recruits and attracts, MSG might not mean too much because we don't win with that talent level.

It's especially bad optics on TV, when seats behind the bench (MSG & CA) are left unfilled too. Thats happened a lot. So the season ticket holders are likely not showing up consistently either.
