(POST-GAME) Georgetown (MSG), Sun. Jan. 27, NOON, FOX / 570AM

How can he honestly point to all those cupcake wins as a sign this is just another loss and they are still way over .500?

He is incompetent as a head coach.

Doesn't recruit, doesn't coach the huddle, doesn't manage the time outs etc.....its a shame.
As to your first point-because Beast and his flock repeat the same mantra. Hopefully in his own head he is saying we have to be better and I have to look at how we can do things differently to make us better. I know he likes to give his guys confidence with shooting the rock but there is a reason Simon is left wide open to shoot 3s it is because that's what the other team wants. So maybe start with raining in Simon's shooting of 3s.
And you are saying we have to remind Mullin to curtail Simon's threes. I would have done that game 1.
Yes, in the immortal words of George Costanza THAT'S WHAT I'M SAYING!

Bama Fan, my friend, any chance of getting me into Bana fandom, since all my teams, Johnnies, Mets & Jets suck? Willing to pay.

LOL they are my salvation for being a fan of all NY teams.
About the whole Board thought we’d win today.
I think this loss is more dispiriting than the Hall game the refs stole from us.
We had a full week to recover from the Butler loss, heal, and energize, and we blew it.
I’ve got no clue what to expect the balance of the schedule: 0 & 11. 3 & 8, 5-6...8 & 3 and a dance card?
Dunno.
No clue.
Not me I didn't want to predict it on this board but I thought Georgetown would win. I think they are a better/deeper team. And I thought that 3 weeks ago after they lost.

I don't think Georgetown is great but of course neither is SJU.

After the first two years of the Mullin experiment I posted a few times that  Mullin could never consistently win at St. John's without top tier talent because the unstructured NBA system he coaches could only be effective with Blue Blood level talent.  It also requires lights out shooters that are supported by a strong inside game.

Today we witnessed everything that could go wrong with that system when one or two players shoot miserably from the outside.  Unfortunately, when Clark's outside game is off he doesn't have the skillset to bring his game inside. Even when he tried today he got stuffed like a turkey.

What was more disturbing to me is what I see happening to my favorite player Shamorie Ponds.  I don't see the fire in his belly.  I see wasted passes to teammates that can't finish plays. I see frustrating 25 foot shots with 20 seconds on the clock because he doesn't see another money player on the floor.  Part  of that is the fault of a totally unstructured system that falls off the cliff as soon as Mullin has to go to his undertalented bench.

What many have been saying since Owens announced his departure was that without a competent big body this team would struggle against bigger competition.  The top priority was getting a transfer big because Keita was a big question mark.

When we had that opportunity in the form of Femi Olujobi on April 9, 2018 the only member of the staff to greet him was Matt Abelmassih.
Neither Mullin nor Mitch were in NYC for this important visit.  The kid felt slighted.

"St. John's assistant Matt Abdelmassih met with graduate transfer Femi Olujobi yesterday. A visit is likely. Plan is to take one immediately eligible big and two sit-out transfers right now. #sub
1:30 PM · Apr 9, 2018."

On April 30th Femi chose DePaul.  Hofstra made the final cut. HOFSTRA!!

"Olujobi chose Depaul over Georgetown, Butler, and Hofstra, the schools rounding out his final four."

This staff was praised by some fans for their ability to develop players.
I never saw any development and the fact that a dozen Mullin recruits have left the program says a lot about the value of their tutelage.  Underachieving has been the hallmark and it was clearly mentioned by Owens when he chose his 5th year under a different staff.

Owens: " It hasn't gone how we expected it to go, for everybody not just me. We expected ourselves to be somewhere else we didn't get to. That alone would make anybody weigh their options." -- Tariq Owens. #sjubb

A talented 5 star player like Heron has lost his game at St. John's. Simon and Clark are exactly the same players they were on day one.  Trimble would not have gotten off the bench at Florida State.  Yes, we are transfer U but we need to remember why players transfer.

I came home and rewatched much of the game in fast forward and television gives you a closer and more personal look at this staff.  Burning time outs to have St. Jean rally the players while looking at your shoes and talking to Richmond is a  very  bad visual for fans.  Especially when the players come out and make the same mistakes.
As I'm sure some have mentioned, this didn't look like a rested team but an unprepared team.  It's getting futile mentioning the fact that we have no depth because when we had the opportunity to give Williams and Roberts burn in the OOC we got an overdose of Trimble.  When Clark isn't hitting and Shamorie isn't leading the offense effectively we will lose.  I expect to see more of the same in the remaining games.

Have to agree w/ '72 on all points.

Something is wrong and a W over Creighton is not the cure, just a band-aid.

Tariq's father Renard throwing some shade Mullin's way. Replied on Twitter to a critique of Mullin with an emoji zipping his lips. Basically implying he has a lot of crap he can say about Mullin negatively but won't say it.

Big reason for leaving. Owens was not developed and Renard underwhelmed by staff.

So do you think Velcro UA sneakers for Chris is the answer? :)

SJU is the easiest team to prepare for because they do nothing on offense. No movement, no screens only ball screens On defense they switch all the time. Today Govan was laying halfhearted lazy screens and immediately causing a major mismatch with keita guarding the ball on the perimeter . That one move breaks down our entire defense. We now have a guard covering a 5 with another player helping on the post. Now we're vulnerable to the 3 pt shoot with G T playing the inside out game. Any decent HS coach would have stopped switching until Govan started making hard screens. I stated back in Dec when teams start getting more video on SJU our winning record will probably take a hit

The only positive thing to come out of today's game was the attendance. Almost 18,000 for a twelve o'clock game between two teams with under 500 league records. Even if there were some give aways this has to be a sign to the AD if he brings good teams into MSG to play a decent SJU team there is hope for the future of SJU basketball.

The game was lost on 2 plays. First when Simon had ball with 24 seconds left In first half. Mullins was yelling to run clock down for one play. Simon turned to look at Mullins and the ball was stolen. 2 more points for Hoyas. Then near end of game figeroa had ball we were down 2 and instead of going to basket he takes a jumper and misses. Hoyas then go on run
How do you overcome having a player like Justin Simon? 0-3 from three. 2-11 from the field. 1-2 from the FT line. 3 turnovers...refuses to acknowledge his weaknesses.

Down 3 with 3 minutes left and Simon took a three. He was already 0-2 and just 2-10 from the field at that point. How? He's the worst shooting perimeter player the Big East has seen since Dom Pointer...yet he lives on the three point stripe.
The entire team lives on the 3 point stripe. They all have the green light. The offense generates no easy buckets. Makes it tough during crunch time. That 3 was late in the clock. Has little to do with Simon ignoring weakness. You’ve really done a 180 on this one....

How many here saw that Georgetown player stuff for 2 points in our face when the game was over no one was defending and only seconds on the clock. Mulling stopped in his tracks and just started. I hope the players took notice and remember that

Saw Ewing gave a pissed off look at that moment. He seems like the type of coach to no let that pass blindly.

Read that Ponds walked off court without handshake line but dont know if related to that dunk or just the loss

The game was lost in the effort and preparation. Nothing more, nothing less. The comeback, the missed threes, the Charles Smithesque missing of 3 easy put-backs were for show.

At first I was pissed too when the G'Town player scored 2 more with a few seconds left and a 9 pt lead. But remember NET tells everyone to try and win by double digits. Went from a 9 to an 11 pt game on that. Maybe it was that?

"It’s no time [for an] emergency,” coach Chris Mullin said. “We’ll regroup and play well for the rest of the year like we have.”
Delusional.

We need to win 2 out of the next 3 to salvage our season. It's as simple as that.

I said at the beginning of the year, staff should be judged on this year's performance. Performance lately has been bad and coaching today was questionable to put it very charitably. Still time to turn it around but sand in hourglass is running pretty low.

I'm a Simon fan, but staff needs to make it clear he doesn't have license to shoot because he has proven he can't. Williams and Keita both had good moments today and Clark had a bad day shooting, that happens. Some of quotes I read today sound like a team that is either ready to implode or regroup and kick butt Wednesday. Hope it's the latter because it is truly now or never..

Didn't bother me seeing Figueroa take that 3, one of our consistent shooters. You want another reason for the loss. How about our penetration and passes to the corner for threes, unfortunately the passes were to Simon.
