(POST-GAME) DePaul, Sat. Jan. 12, 6p, CBS SN / 970 AM

Mullin put greater blame on the officiating crew, citing DePaul’s 28 free-throw attempts versus St. John’s six.

You look at the stat sheet, you can digest that,” Mullin said. “Everything’s similar except one thing.”

The series of profanities unleashed by Mullin in the second half eventually cost the Red Storm. With just over five minutes remaining, the coach was given a technical foul, and watched his team’s six-point deficit double in three minutes, prompting Mullin to flash a sarcastic thumbs up towards the referees.

“What we’re gonna start doing is when people crash the boards, we’re gonna hit ’em in the neck so they don’t come back anymore,” Mullin said. “We’re gonna start boxing out like that.”

The fight could be a lot tougher than the 12-0 start made it out to be.

My guess is 13 wins will definitely win the league, maybe even 12.

3 loses in the first 5 is not great but next 4 are winnable. But clearly Ponds means a ton to this team and if he is out for any substantial stretch they can forget about winning the league.

Simon and Clark

Hopefully, it's not worse than a strain, but wouldn't be surprised if Ponds is kept out for the next two games, and then the week off leading up to being healthy for 1/27 G'town game.

Next two may be tough.

A doctor friend and his son went in my stead for their first game at Carnesecca. The kid loved the game but not the result. Mullin's F bombs were clearly heard by the fans. He should spend more time coaching his players than f bombing the refs. He deserved the technical. But saying stupid things is becoming too common for Mully. Publicly stating you will encourage your undersized team, which he is responsible for recruiting and putting on the floor, to play hard and dirty shows he has a long way to go in learning how to handle pressure. He also had an arrogant response in defending his no rebounding policy while addressing the rebounding deficits.
"San Antonio [Spurs] probably has the best transition defense in the world. They do not crash the offensive boards. So yes, we like to get back on defense and not give up transition baskets. When my guys are open, they are free to shoot open shots and then get back on defense, not crash the boards and have a bad defensive transition possession. That’s our policy. Thank you for the question.”
So, they are also free to have bad defensive possessions, take any open outside shot and totally neglect the inside game.
Well, genius it showed tonight! The two DePaul forwards scored 45 points on you. The most they have scored all year.
Great policy.
Hi Mikey Dixon!

Oh wait
Mikey is at the pool in sunny Phoenix.
Our short bench got shorter but coach needs to learn how to use that bench he was responsible for assembling.
We won't be ranked for the rest of the season but Buffalo will be. The coach of that team regularly goes 8-9 deep into his bench with point production. Yes, Buffalo, in the tundra of the north.

Couldn't watch tonight, glad I couldn't. This loss is a killer that will haunt us. No Ponds, but shouldn't have mattered at home. Since our ranking the wheels have come off. But that's life as a SJ fan. Ponds and LJ catch the injury bug just as we are in the thick of our conference play. Heron has not been giving us anywhere near what we figured he would. In a year where every game is so huge, you cannot lose at home to DePaul of all teams. Our NET went from like 24 to probably 45-50 now after losing 2 in a row. If Ponds and LJ have nagging injuries and miss another game or two, our NCAA hopes are in real jeopardy. Also, the refs have been atrocious. 28 vs. 6 FT attempts? I never remember the refs being this terrible across the board. Incredible.

LJ was our best player today. If he was injured, then I'd love to see what he can do when healthy.

The refs were not the reason we lost. However, if we continue to play with the short rotation, then the refs are a factor in every game we play. For example, we would have been much better off getting the refs who worked Georgetown/Providence today. They were basically letting those players get away with assault and battery.

This isn't the NBA and we don't have to be the San Antonio Spurs. How many college teams run lethal fast breaks? Sure you have to get back on D but do you need all 5 back immediately? Can't send one or two guys to offensive rebound especially the shooter who may know his shot is off and have a good idea where the rebound may end up.

Unfortunately Mullin wants to coach this team as if he had NBA talent. These are college kids who will never whiff the NBA. He makes so many contradictory statements it gets hard to decipher if he really knows the impact of his words in public forums. The trainer and players knew Shamorie was playing hurt but he "just found out today"? He played Shamorie into the ground and exhaustion last game so maybe he is clueless about his players or maybe he makes stuff up as he coaches his imaginary NBA team. This whole experiment has been so surreal nothing would surprise me but not having an experienced coach next go you is on you.
It reminds of the quote often repeated here about what a former UCLA player supposedly said about Steve Lavin. The statement implied that they had the talent to do better but didn't have the coaching to get them further along in the season. We have the talent but and a lot of deficiencies. No depth, no height, substandard recruiting class on the bench, and 4 guys that had never coached in their lives. All of that is hard to overcome unless you get top talent that minimizes coaching deficiencies. I became resigned weeks ago that all those deficiencies would only get us so far this season. I'm still hoping for a Precious gift to make next season bearable.

What happens on Monday?
i gave up alcohol sugar meat etc. Monday is 72 hours and hopefully I’m not in such a destructive mode because a lot of things pissed me off this game
I had Peruvian stir fried beef (lomo saltado), washed it down with a Stella, and had Peruvian cheesecake (Lucuma) for dessert. As Lloyd Bridges In the Airplane movies said, you picked the wrong week to give up alcohol.
I love Lomo and Lucuma and if you said Pisco Sour instead of Stella I’d probably hate your guts right now :)
They have a Peruvian bar near me in South Florida that used to be a Peruvian restaurant. Happy hour from 5-10PM. $2 bottles and $5 Pisco Sours. You won't need more than a few to feel better about tonight's game. Plus half price appetizers during happy hour.

It was only a matter of time before the circling vultures of this board decided to land.
We lost because we didn't have the best player in the league and one of the best in the country playing. Hard to make up the 34 points between scoring and assists he's responsible for.
Mullin is right, if we're gonna get called for bs fouls anyway, might as well foul them hard.
My only hope is that Ponds returns for our next game so that the trolls can go back under their bridge.

Trolls is a harsh word.

In the post game presser Marvin said he knew for days Ponds would be out. Mullin said he found out day of the game. Clearly based on the picture tweeted out during the week where Ponds wasn't dressed for practice that would raise some doubt if he could play. It was clear this staff had no plan without Ponds...just played the way we always play and you can't do that without a player like Ponds. At the minimum we should have been pressuring the ball full court earlier in the game. We let Depaul get too comfortable in the half-court and they were dominating us inside.

As for Mullin overall...I sense the pressure building. He was downright unpleasant in the press conference. He's got to regroup quickly. 9-9 or 10-8 is where we are headed and quite frankly that isn't good enough from him this year.
