4 games and these 4 things are really bothering me

1. This is one of the worst switching teams on defense I’ve seen in years

2. Wayyyyy too many turnovers that are real careless head scratchers.

3. Waayyyy too many cheap stupid dumb pick another adjective fouls

4. Never seen a team fumble the ball or miss so many shots point blank range.

The switching has been terrible, so far, that I was hoping we'd not switch anything or simply play zone tonight.

The missed bunnies, as frustrating as it is, has been going on for awhile it seems.

My big takeaway is the CMA needs to sit down with both Earlington and Moore and explain what their roles on this team are going to be. And if they are not going to accept those roles, then they should be benched. As far as Earlington goes, I'm not sure what the reason is for his regression through the first four games, but he needs to figure it out. Under no circumstance should he be taking the 3rd most shots, just as under no circumstance should Moore be taking the 2nd most shots.

If half their shots go to Cole, Posh, Julian, or Williams, we win that game.

Maher, saw you ask about Cole's body language. When he went to the bench, teammates went to high five him. He did acknowledge them, but gave them half hearted quick slaps with a mug on his face and his head down angry. Believe there was another similar incident but with CMA last game. I think he's very frustrated but he can't let it get him down so much. Gotta have a short memory here. It's a shame we can't get Cole wide open looks like every other team seems to get their best shooters at times. It seems like he's forcing shots instead of letting the game come to him. Same with Moore. He can shoot...he has good offensive game for a big. But he is wild at times and takes many crazy shots. BYU takes 20 seconds to pick our defense apart like they're doing perfect surgery. Then we get the ball back and immediately chuck in the first 5 seconds with an arm in our face. Brick, rebound, BYU ball again...and another bucket for them. That was the game in a nutshell. Really reminded me of the Mullin era. Other team making 3's all over, and we start chucking trying to match them...but can't. Before you know it we are down 10. I just don't get how BYU and other teams are always finding average athletes but deadly shooters. Still early, but Cole has not been able to get good looks.

Have to agree with Mike. SJU shoots fifty per cent from two point area , nineteen per cent from three and yet takes twenty one threes. There is very little movement of the ball to get a good shot. The whole roster seems to operate on a “ if you feel it take it “ attitude without spending time to get a better shot.
SJU will be a better three point shooting team than in the recent past but not good enough to beat talented teams.

I am disappointed like everyone else here but we are 3-1 and have played 4 D1 teams who were well coached and this loss was to a good BYU team that is picked to finish #2 in their conference behind Gonzaga.  It is a team filled with a good mix of experience with grad transfers and juniors rated 4 star players out of high school.  That maturity proved the difference tonight.
We, on the other hand, are a relatively young team looking for an identity.  We are going to rely on two talented junior college transfers and a true freshman point guard.  Our best player, JC,  is a rapidly developing late addition from  last year who only needs to become stronger and more aggressive to become one of St. John's best players out of high school like Shamorie Ponds.
Once Williams gets more comfortable with the new players and Rasheem Dunn returns this will be a fun team to watch in the most unusual season ever.

I was not able to watch it live. Yikes. What a disappointing performance. I knew when vegas had byu favored by 2 we were in trouble. Just ugly all around.

They could have, and should have, played better. But to use a boxing analogy, we were ready to fight one opponent that was scratched, so we fought another that we didn’t prepare for, which always lead to surprising outcomes. We are better off for it, on to the next.

Tonight's loss was frustrating mostly because I believe we underperformed. I felt BYU would be a tricky matchup for us anyway but we had an edge in certain aspects of the game that it seemed like we did not take advantage of.

For the first time in four games this season, Posh never asserted his will on the game. He was more passive than he was in the other three games this season. He had gotten to the line in every other game multiple times but did not get there once tonight. He did have one great steal from Haarms but that was it. In our first three games he seemed to be stealing the ball or deflecting it constantly. Posh definitely played a decent game tonight and was effective with assists and rebounding but he was not the force he was in the first three games. It may be unfair to lay this on a Freshman but we will probably go as far as he takes us this season. He may not be our very best player (perhaps Julian is) but he might be our most important.

Moore and Earlington's shot selection left much to be desired but sometimes others were too passive in finding their shots when those two weren't chucking up ill advised attempts. In the half court set Julian was very comfortable but others were never in rhythm. Getting others in the flow of the half court offense is something that needs to be better developed.

Much of our offense typically comes in transition and other than the first five minutes of the second half that part of the game did not really get going tonight. I think for whatever reason BYU brought more energy to the game than we did. The blue collar nature of CMA's team demands that they don't get outworked. I felt tonight BYU outworked us.

I think this is going to be a fun team and much of the problems around tonight's performance can definitely be fixed. I think our next two games will give CMA the opportunity to continue to build the team's confidence and tweak our offense and defense before meeting UCONN on December 11th.

This was a good BYU team, most of the basket guru's like Rothstein and Katz have them as a tournament team and finishing 2nd in the WCC. BYU and Gonzaga are outliers, they are in a mid-major conference but both of those programs get high major recruits. Losing to BYU on a neutral court isn't going to hurt tournament resume in March, they will be a 20+ win at Large bid team.

With that said, very disappointing loss, this game was there for the taking, they played really bad, outside of Champ. This is a game where a guy like Dunn makes a difference. First thing, he takes those minutes away from guys like McGriff and Caraher. Those guys are giving the team almost nothing at this point, especially Caraher, he's lost all confidence, he's just throwing shots up hoping for something, it looks absolutely horrible. Next, we have to remember Posh is still a freshman there's going to be ups and downs just like how Champ had last year, on these down games like this, Dunn is capable of picking up that slack and giving 10-12 points, he's already proven that last year.

Some other observations...
-Moore has got to calm down, love his energy but he gets too outta control and takes bad shots and forces things, I'm sure CMA is aware of that, and going to have conversations with him on that. He's still by far the best of the bigs, Toro and Roberts haven't given much at all.
-Vince Cole is slowly losing confidence, you can tell the frustration, he's really gotta work on his ball handling this off-season, these last 2 games when competition has stepped up, he's struggle to score because of poor ball handling. He's going to have to figure that out and get in the gym and get his confidence back, otherwise I'm not sure how effective he will be against high major competition.
-Wusu continues to impress, his role is going to continue to grow if he can stay out of foul trouble.
as the Rock would say " Know your role "
And while on the topic, I didn't initially notice Haarms after the Posh steal until watching it later on Twitter. His reaction looked like a heel who just cheated with a low blow or foreign object, but the good guy kicked out of the pin attempt at the count of 2.9.

This team needs Champ, Cole and Williams to get most shots. With the way Earlington and Moore throw up shots, they can't be taking more than Cole, Williams, Posh and Wusu. Just can't win that way. CMA needs to establish some roles here or we're going to see more games like this. Frustrating and annoying loss. Team could easily be 4-0. What concerns me is that we all repeatedly see these shortcomings, but it takes almost an entire season for the coaching staff to get everyone on the same page.

Everybody is down on Earlington. He’s struggled a bit, but he is one of our best offensive players. As I predicted, Cole is limited because of his lack of athleticism and poor ball handling. He really does remind me of Avery Patterson.

And cole is ice cold from 3. I think hes 1-14 in the last 3 games. And seems to have a bit of an attitude to boot.

Yeah everytime we get a good shooter here, for some reason they all of a sudden suck for us.
Being serious wtf is up with that.
