Porter Moser

I know St. John's fans are concerned about Moser's 246-226 (52.1%) all-time head coaching record, but look at his last five years: 109-64 (63%) with two conference titles and four NCAA Tournament wins.

Who would you prefer between Moser and Cluess?
C) Pitino.

Honestly, I thought I'd take Cluess before Moser initially. But I'll have to say Moser's last 5 seasons has been pretty darn decent. I don't know enough about Moser other than what I saw of Loyola-Chicago in last year's NCAA Tournament (I briefly watched 'em for about a half this season). I've seen a lot of Cluess' Iona teams, so I'm able to make a more sound reasoning when it comes to him. Neither coach would be on my itinerary, if I was doing the hiring. But I'm not doing the hiring in this case.

Being Moser is 10 years younger, has recently (in the past 4 or 5 seasons) shown his chops in a much tougher conference (than Cluess), made a Final Four, his team has shown they'll dig deep defensively (was #5 nationally this season and #6 last season), and he has a bit of pizzaz about him then I may be leaning a bit towards Moser in this case.

I don't trust those "local power players." They mainly have their own agenda. If we need a "local power player," then just hire Borman. Problem solved, IMO.

Are you related?
Or, what's it you know anyways?

I know that he will be the next coach

I’m hoping and fully expecting that we will

IMO, if Moser gets the job over Cluess, it will be as much an indictment of the MAAC conference as anything. And don't forget that until very recently, Creighton and Butler were both Missouri Valley teams.

Well at this point it looks like you have at least a 50/50 chance of being correct.

Was on the Hurley train, but this all depends on how he builds staff.

Was at 100% early this morning. Meeting/dinner with higher ups a formality.

This Moser buzz seems to be taking off. My only concern with the guy is the hurdles he'll have to overcome to access the NY Metro HS/AAU recruiting circuit.
I think he makes between $900K - $1mm+, so may cost as much as Cluess.
Don't know if he has a buyout, but was extended by Loyola through 2025-26 last year following their fabulous FF run.
He is a very solid coach.
I'd be a bit surprised he'd come here: a 'Chicago' guy whose family loves the Chi-area.
Just do it this week, please, and include a high-powered AC recruiter with local ties.
Thank you.
Lol.

I honestly prefer Moser, but won't mind either hire and will root like hell for whichever one becomes our coach. I really enjoyed watching that final four team play (beautiful basketball), like what I've read about Moser and they did finish tied for first in conference this year but lost a two pointer in conference tourney so wasn't a collapse after final four team.
Regarding recruiting, while he concentrates a lot on Chicago (not a bad source of talent), their leading scorer this year is from Edison, NJ and two of first seven rotation players are international kids.

He was making $420k 3 years ago, so that would be quite a bump, even with the Final Four appearance. I agree on the family stuff--he's got 4 young kids--although presumably he thought about that before coming to the interview.

..... and a guy (Cluess) who really- really wants to be coach of StJohn's

We seem to hire guys based primarily on who they charm, and I'm afraid this is no different. Hopefully Moser actually does something here with the program.

Charm did not get him to the Final Four.

Right, Loyola is mum on the raise other than describing it as a 'hefty raise' and believed to make him the highest paid coach in the MVC. That had been Ben Jacobson's 'plum' at $900K, previously.

I’m sold. Moser will coach an all around game and focus on defense. Hopefully assistants will local contacts will fill the gap of being unknown among the NY area coaches. Not against Cluess and have a lot of respect for his resume, so I think either of these guys could be successful.

Moser is a very good coach. That’s what we need. Very charismatic, doesn’t skip out on recruiting and has a good eye for talent. He’s got a great pedigree coaching under Majerus and is hungry. Some point to an underwhelming record, but I’ve seen his teams play, and they play good basketball. Get him better talent and we can be tough. Coaches both ends of the floor, not just rolling the balls out. I think he’s a good long term choice to build this and has experience and knows what success takes. I’m all on board. He will also use social media and energize fans.
