I'm not saying he is best available candidate and I have no problem going with Cluess if that what is decided, but one thing for sure, Moser would be very involved in recruiting and he does his due diligence in that regard. Would obviously take him time to build the high school network of contacts he has in Chicago though which is a negative. WCJF will love the quote that Moser is a good closer!

Good post, NCJ.
I do think Moser is a solid coach. While he was 105-101 over his first 7 years as a HC, he has been winning at a .530 clip at Loyola the past 8 years, plus the 6 years with the great Majerus gives him solid creds.
But you nailed it regarding getting acclimated to the NY Metro scene. It'd take him 2 - 3 years to get that down.
Meanwhile, he may well struggle..
All in, I'm hoping Cragg is simply checking boxes and will opt for Cluess this week.
Unless he thinks he can get the Chicago recruits to come here.
True, i thought of that as well. I prefer Cluess but Moser might work out. I do think he's a solid x&o and defensive-minded coach. and he is a hard worker.
But I'd expect he would have a much steeper climb to achieve success here than even Cluess having to recruit at a higher level would.
NY is a tough scene to 'crash'.
We shall see.

Are you related?
Or, what's it you know anyways?
Lol.
I will say this: That FF team really got after it on defense and the ball movement was some of the prettiest I'd seen in a long time. The D can probably be attributed to the coach. Hopefully the ball movement was as well, and not just a bunch of kids who had remarkable chemistry.
He is a fundamentally sound coach.
Maybe it took him 10 years to get it all down.
The last 5 have been on the sweet side of the ledger.
I luv his background with Majerus.
I'm not against the hire.
We need it soon is all I'm sayin'.
We shall see.
P.S. Can we get Sister Jean as well?!?

Maybe you take a Moser and build a core of assistants that check boxes like local recruiting ties as well as keeping GSJ for some continuity.
Slightly off topic - but Moser is a spitting image of NFL Red Zone host Scott Hanson
Moser has a bit of Steve Lavin in him, in that he is definitely a promotional kind of guy. Check out his Twitter - lots of shots of him appearing on CBS, etc. Pumping up the Final Four story from last year.
Rightly or wrongly, that, plus the fact that he is 10 years younger than Cluess, is going to work to his advantage.

Just curious do you post under the same name on Jungle?
I have never posted on Jungle and rarely read it. Who stole my handle?
There is someone with the same name. Not a fan of SJU either. I think a fan of Iona or something. But he posts there and was wondering because you didn't seem like same person based on your posts here.
Funny you asked this question...was thinking same thing after having read the most recent posts on JJ...my initial take was that it was out of character...funny, makes sense now

He would probably bring assistant coach Matt Gordon with him. They have been working together since Rick Majerus‘s staff. Gordon was director of basketball operations before becoming an assistant coach the last four years. Other assistant hasn’t been with him that long.

I am warming up to the idea of Moser, but when can Oliva go away?

I know St. John's fans are concerned about Moser's 246-226 (52.1%) all-time head coaching record, but look at his last five years: 109-64 (63%) with two conference titles and four NCAA Tournament wins.

Interesting.
Who would you prefer between Moser and Cluess?

All things being close to equal, which they seem to be, not sure why we wouldn’t go with the NY guy who already has the connections to the school and the local power players?

Because SJU braintrust has always thought they're smarter than everyone else.

The ONLY sensible hire they ever made was Fran.

Oh hey, here's a guy who's tearing shit up locally, let's hire him.

Agree with you there. Although Jarvis wasn’t terrible, notwithstanding the way things unraveled. The rest were very high risk hires which turned out as expected.

I’m fine with this hire if true. Good coach. Prioritizes things like DEFENSE. Goes out and recruits and is a worker. Also much younger than Cluess and very charismatic. A real coach. Let’s get to work!

I'm about ready to say Fig can be player/coach. That being said I think we can do a lot worse than Moser. If were are going for cheapest available option Moser is certainly a value candidate. The fact we are interviewing him though makes me think that, Brey, Odom, Rhoades were too expensive.

I really feel like they are going on the cheap here. Do they even spring for good assistants? I can't see Borman going to work for Moser.

Defense everyday over offense.
