Porter Moser

Guess they don't view him as an 'outlier' or an 'epic disaster'.
Lol.
Loyola should definitely want to keep him. No doubt he's a great coach for a mid major like Loyola.

I'm just not convinced he's worth $2.2 million / 8 years.

Had he made the Sweet 16 instead of the Final 4, nobody would even be considering him. I'm concerned we're using our emotional attachment to that run and not properly evaluating his resume.

What I'm saying is we're basically giving him $17.6 million that is 100% reliant on that few games stretch. He might end up being a good coach, but regardless we are vastly overpaying.
I agree the comp level is high for a mid-major coach, but the $17.6mm total is not all guaranteed.
We also do not know the level of the buyout or how it's staggered through the years.
I admit I've drunk the Kool-Aid on this guy and am praying that's a correct 'view'.
Lol.

If Moser declines, who would you like SJ to pursue?
As an unimportant sidenote...having lived in the midwest now for 18 years I am so over hearing about "midwest" values like New Yorkers have none. My friends out here are just as much smack talking, beer drinking people as anyone back east. And the people back east can bbq, drink diet soda and exude social decorum just as well as the people out here.
The rest of that article made sense...his roots are there...better Chicago jobs might open for him...he has friends there...etc. But the values thing is just b.s.
Sorry rant over...just tired of people casting NYers as some lesser form of humanity.
Wholeheartedly agree...

And while we're at it, can we stop referring to people outside the metropolitan area or in the "flyover" states as illiterate, redneck, cow-tipping rubes?

Moser may be a good coach, well have to wait and see. But what bothers me most is our program is now bereft of any talent (except maybe Heron). This process needed to be done sooner and contingencies needed to be prepared for.

They could've hired Cluess or Moser or GSJ. Any of them could work out. But who ever the hire was needed to be in place weeks ago before transfers and recruits jumped ship.

Talent wins. Bottom line. Coaching is secondary to that. Whoever the coach is he needs to bring A level recruiters to his staff and the university needs to be prepared to pay them well. Then, the whole staff needs to recruit. Team effort. Every person with "coach" in their title needs be involved in the recruiting process. No one is above or excluded from it.

If in fact the $$$ & years are correct, the buyout for a school trying to poach him better be in the neighborhood of $10 million. If we are going to take such a long term chance we should be sure that he will be here for the long term.
I assumed part of the appeal of Moser is that he'd come cheap. Nobody else has attempted to get him.

$2.2 million per year at 8 years is insane. There better be an affordable buyout number.

Oliva is a disgrace to the program.
We are bidding against ourselves for this guy
It's not like he's a hot commodity - he wasn't mentioned in any other coaching search
He's been offered a contract that would more than triple his salary for 8 years
And he didn't jump at it - what does that tell you?
I think Moser will accept the job. The word is that he feels that he has hit a ceiling recruiting at Loyola. Also, after his FF appearance, the big offers really never came.

I hope he takes the job and I think he will ultimately be a very good hire. Hopefully we know by the end of the day. I am sure SJU and Moser have agreed on a deadline for him to accept or decline.
I watched a 3 minute video of a head coach running practice and teaching basketball and I got a chubby. Better than porn.

Paying Moser $2.2 over 8 years makes no sense. Why not try to get creative with Cluess. If SJU is really his dream job, tell him that his buy out is prohibitive and buy out his contract but back date his raise. Pay him what he is making at Iona for a year or two, and increase his salary after we break even with the buyout amount. Or agree to a home/away games with Iona, or to get Iona in MSG doubleheaders, something that will generate some dollars for Iona and see if they would be willing to reduce his buyout based on an agreement (probably burned this bridge by not reaching out to Iona though).
I do not get paying Moser $2.2. He's probably making $1 million or less. Worse part of this is that it ties the programs hands for way to long.

Making GSJ the headcoach would be a better alternative until the program gets its finances in order.
As far as recruiting NYC and I think it will tell you all you need to know.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/w...-overlooked-coaching-strength-recruiting/amp/

Apparently he’s a recruiting beast and is out there hustling. I love this from a coach and I have no doubt that if he is the next coach, he will endear himself locally if he works this hard and establishes connections. Obviously a good staff with some local ties recruiting-wise would be a big boon in conjunction with the head coach out there. Let’s face it though. Our rosters haven’t been NYC-heavy in decades. He can grab talent wherever he finds it and I’m ok with that.
He’s a “recruiting beast” who has landed such incredibe talent that he’s made exactly one NCAA tournament in 15 years? And coming out of some pretty weak conferences. That makes him either a horrible developer of talent and/or a horrendous game coach.

Hi Paultz. He may well decline, although if that annual number is right, maybe not.
If he declines, at this point, I’d opt for Tim Cluess.
If he’s too miffed at us to accept, then Scheyer with top ACs tapped.
My 3rd choice is Odom, although I view him to be 1 tweet away from the ACC.
Correction: Rhoades #3 and Odom #4.

Everyone wants everything sooner. That is society today, however, it looks like this guy might be running our program for the next 8 years. What have we really lost for waiting a few extra days? A few players from a disappointing team? The only players that left that I wanted back and could possibly be back are LJ, Simon and Heron. Lets let the coach bring in his OWN players to run his system and rebuild SJ. I also watched a few of Moser's videos and he looks like a coach and sounds like a coach. Give him a chance and lets see how he does.

Agree if all those years are gtd. Wow. That’s even a lot to accept with my Kool-Aid buzz.
Lol.
But we don’t know that yet, do we??

How can you explain a mid major coach not jumping to sign an eight year contract at a one million, three hundred dollar annual raise with a major program?
He must be having serious doubts about coming to NY, family objections like that of our prior coach or he is s negotiating with SJU simply to get Loyola to give him a half million dollar raise.
He certainly doesn't consider SJU his dream job and if he does eventually sign with SJU I hope he doesn't say that baloney.

If this means we get Cluess, it's a net positive, IMO.
