Apparently he’s a recruiting beast and is out there hustling. I love this from a coach and I have no doubt that if he is the next coach, he will endear himself locally if he works this hard and establishes connections. Obviously a good staff with some local ties recruiting-wise would be a big boon in conjunction with the head coach out there. Let’s face it though. Our rosters haven’t been NYC-heavy in decades. He can grab talent wherever he finds it and I’m ok with that.
Former Johnny Tim Doyle in the Chicago Tribune piece above captured part of the challenge for PM. not insurmountable but salient;

“He has an outstanding reputation in the Midwest,” said Tim Doyle, the Stadium and CBS Sports HQ analyst who played at St. John’s before transferring to Northwestern. “If you go to New York, are you OK with hitting the reset button with your contacts and connections? I’m not doubting his X’s and O’s (skills), but recruiting in New York is a politics game and you have to be tied in to those AAU coaches.”
I get that, but apparently the guy is a tireless recruiter who gets along well with basketball people and players. They say he’s a great closer. From reading an article like that, I think he can be successful here and it’s because none of our former coaches were willing to do that.

Lavin did for a while but was derailed by health concerns etc. none of our former guys worked like this guy does. He’s charismatic and while he isn’t a NY guy per se, it really just takes some time in the gyms, talking to coaches etc. if he adds some great recruiters, it can bridge that gap a lot.

I can see why SJU people think he has a lot of upside. He’s very charismatic and can win over players, seems to work like crazy to recruit and knows how to coach at both ends of the floor. He’s done a good job in last few years at Loyola and really built them up and that’s with limited resources at a hard place to recruit to. The Big East offers him better opportunities to recruit.

I’m not overwhelmed with his distant record either but he’s committed to continuous improvement and checks a lot of boxes with respect to both recruiting and coaching that our former coaches didn’t. Nobody can guarantee total success but imho SJU is pursuing the correct qualities in a coach, namely x’s and o’s, attention to detail and recruiting as well as having some charisma.

I’d be satisfied with us finally hiring a coach who understands all aspects of the job.

Mine is not a much 'shared' opinion on the Board, but i think this guy is the real deal from A-Z.
And unlike many, I hope he accepts this crazy $$$$$$$-deal we've offered him.
Lol.
We shall see.

If a prospective coach feels he needs more than five years to get the program up to a level where he wouldn't be fired, he is someone to avoid.
SJU has become a coach's dream. They pay you for doing nothing or allow you to get salary increases from your current school by interviewing with SJU.

I won't even pretend to have an informed opinion on Moser vs Cluess vs (fill in name here). But if this guy – or any of these guys – checks all the boxes as noted above, I'm game to give them a chance. A hard-working, charismatic guy who makes players better will build his recruiting network locally and nationally quickly enough.

I'll reserve judgement on whoever is hired until I see how they perform in the role here.

Not true. It has more to do with having head coach status for longer so it doesn’t effect recruiting. In addition, SJU is a poor job because we’ve been know to yank the rug out from our prior coaches. Showing commitment is a good thing. I don’t think it has anything to do with a coaches mettle. It’s about SJU administration needing to earn trust in the coaching community.

For all you hockey fans, this feels like Bobby Hull to the WHA. He really didn't want to go, so he threw out an outrageous sum at the time -- $1 million. Hopefully we aren't Moser's Winnipeg Jets and he sticks with Chicago.

A guy like Moser, with his drive and focus, 'should' succeed anywhere, imo.
I'd prop that he'll be smart enough to know the 'deal' in the NY Metro and hire a very capable NY-seasoned AC and continue to work the Chicagoland recruiting landscape.

I agree that wanting 8 years is not a good sign. He should know that if he isn't successful by years 3-4 that the entire St. John's fan base would want him fired.

This is the same article I posted about 24 pages ago and part of what sold me on him when I read it in 2018. I am with MCNPA & Chicago on this one. I believe this guy is the real deal and can get our program the kind of coaching/recruiting continuity that has eluded us. Understand many disagree and agree money is high, but if we win, everything will be OK.

Harrington and his boyfriend should be in jail. I lost a ton of respect for the school for how they handled that situation. What a disgrace. Calling us mom and pop is an insult to mom and pops!

Well said, NCJ.
I'm not trying t be contrary here.
This guy just screams 'authenticity' not 'outlier' to me in just about every metric upon which to measure a college HC.
And the success he's achieved over the past 5 years are testimony to his ability and his work ethic in my view.
I agree the $$$$$'s are high, but that may be the 'price' we have to pay to get a 'real deal' like Moser. to leave his Chicagoland-base.
We shall see but I'm hopeful he accepts and that he brings great success to our once 'storied' program.

Seems like some here just suffered a rude awakening in realizing St John's is no longer a destination that coaches aspire to come to. This downfall has been 2 decades in the making. Sad to watch it play out this way. But just be hopeful whoever is hired can beat the odds and make an impact.

Guess they don't view him as an 'outlier' or an 'epic disaster'.
Lol.
Loyola should definitely want to keep him. No doubt he's a great coach for a mid major like Loyola.

I'm just not convinced he's worth $2.2 million / 8 years.

Had he made the Sweet 16 instead of the Final 4, nobody would even be considering him. I'm concerned we're using our emotional attachment to that run and not properly evaluating his resume.

What I'm saying is we're basically giving him $17.6 million that is 100% reliant on that few games stretch. He might end up being a good coach, but regardless we are vastly overpaying.

How many high major coaches have joined the Big East in the last 20 years and how many have we lost to high major schools? The league is not a destination for big time coaches. As a whole, we can’t compete with the budgets of the SEC, etc.

Won't matter. With that salary he will be here even if he never wins a game. Zaun going to have a heart attack.

As an unimportant sidenote...having lived in the midwest now for 18 years I am so over hearing about "midwest" values like New Yorkers have none. My friends out here are just as much smack talking, beer drinking people as anyone back east. And the people back east can bbq, drink diet soda and exude social decorum just as well as the people out here.
The rest of that article made sense...his roots are there...better Chicago jobs might open for him...he has friends there...etc. But the values thing is just b.s.
Sorry rant over...just tired of people casting NYers as some lesser form of humanity.

I don't think it has anything to do with budget. Going with what gman said, I think it comes from the belief by some people (and the majority of posters on this board) that NYC is the greatest city that ever existed, and everyone is just dying to live and work here, and those who aren't are just fools. Yes, it's a great city, but it just may not be everyone's cup of tea. The sooner we realize that the lure of the city may not be as great as we think, the better off we will be.

Agree 100% as an 83 grad I have the seen the good the bad and ugly. We are and have been for a long time, a step above a mid major program. Big recruits don't come here. I am so tired of seeing NYC kids star elsewhere. Makes me appreciate Shamorie a little more because he took a chance on us. Unfortunately, nobody else followed.
