Porter Moser
Slater saying it is an 8 y ear deal for Moser on the table. Sounds like a lot but as always the buyout is the big number.
Is it a 'big number' and does it decline over the years?
Very happy to hear we 'discovered' that mechanism.
Lol.

I wouldn't give anyone who has never coached "on the big stage" an 8 year contract
And Moser is thinking about it?
I'd sign before St John's changes it's mind

It is not all guaranteed obviously.

if cragg was on board with this i've lost my faith in him. This is baffling

That would simply be ridiculous and another sign of inept management. The only leverage this guy (a moderately successful mid major coach) has is the leverage that we gave him, so instead of bargaining form strength, we bargain from weakness. Really embarrassing.

Exactly. Given the Hurley & Cluess buyouts, just curious what levels it might be set at and when it kicks in.

If the buyout is a couple million or less then it doesn't matter how many years his contract is.

It seems that Mullin didn't have a buyout, and that's screwing us over. Make a favorable buyout so in 2-4 years we can go after another coach........

Mike Zaun Wrote: Mullin should draft a huge apology letter to the fans for his ridiculous tenure here as a coach. He was never invested and it's now known per many sources out there in the media. He wasted our time and did not recruit. What you call "bitching" is demanding effort. It's what got Lavin canned when he stopped recruiting and it's what ended Mullin's tenure. Effort and accountability are expected of any other job that pays 45k or less let alone millions of dollars. I wanted Mullin to work out for us as badly as you did. We differ in that you care about the person/emotions over the program despite failure and I care about the program over the person. Why is it so hard to understand that you can want Mullin to step down and then also acknowledge the coaching search has been a disaster? I want to cleanse the dead weight. Sounds like you want it to stay.

I am not quite sure it is fair to call the coachiing search a disaster. This is a process. Perhaps when Duke hired Coach K, all those years ago, there would have been people calling that search a disaster if the process was scrutinized to the same degree that this process has been. Social media and immediate gratification culture of today's society does not give long term analysis and patience its proper place.

For all anyone knows Moser, Cluess, Scheyer or whomever we hire will be the right choice. It is easy to be negative given our post Lou Carenesecca history, but at the end of the day we will hire someone and my hope is that when that hire is made the program thrives and is wildly successful. Trust the process, as murky as it is, someone will come here.

When the Yankees hired Joe Torre the optics were terrible, "Clueless Joe" he was called. A few years later he was Genius Joe the man with the Midas touch. Patience is the key here. Let us see how it plays out before we deem the whole thing a disaster. I for one will remain hopeful and stay positive.
It’s easy to look like a genius when team owner continuously restocks the roster with future Hall of Famers. And I’m a Yankee fan
It’s the exact same with CBB and well documented. John Wooden became a genius when Sam Gilbert came into the picture and a string of legendary players found their way to UCLA. It is and always has been overwhelmingly about recruiting.

It is my understanding that Cluess’s contract at Iona is around $600k guaranteed for 6 years- if they turf him tomorrow without cause, then he gets the full 6 years, unreduced. That is why they were able to extract the huge buyout from him. But he could make the same amount here in 3 or 4 years, and be on a much bigger stage.

Don’t know what Moser’s current contract is, other than it is around $900k supposedly. But I cannot imagine SJU offering either him or Cluess a guaranteed salary for 8 years.

Right. As i joked earlier, I'm very happy we discovered the mechanism.
And I'm not sure if Moser accepts our offer, but I do think that if he does, he'll succeed here by then, and we won't wish to seek one.
Seems many on this Board are focusing n his losing years 6 -8 years ago and not his record in the past 5.
He was 'righting' the ship at IL State in his 4th year, but the school decided to fire him. Loyola was a total rebuild, plus they changed conferences.
I truly like this guy as a 'coach'.
I concede I could be wrong.
We shall see.

Yikes.

That would be well above market value.

Nope but he once went on a tour of the Duke campus... so you know he is right up there at top of list.

Per Slater
The salary and length of contract have gone up since the negotiations began. Source indicates it began at $2M for 5 years. Now, in the neighborhood of $2.2M for 8 years.
