Porter Moser
You can’t tell me this hire is about anything other then being cheap!! I don’t even want Cluess but I know he’s a hundred times better then Moser they just don’t want to pay the buyout on Cluess plain and simple. I wanted Pitino but knew that would never happen cause we haven’t operated like a big time program since Louie retired. However if your going the mid major route doesn’t it make sense to go with the better coach who’s right in your backyard, played basketball for the school , and really wants to coach here!
I agree with you, it's probably about the money. If that's the case, then they need to pass that on down WRT ticket prices. No casual fan is going to pay top dollar to see this guy coach the team in the immediacy (maybe, if he has success over time, though Jarvis had a great first two years, and the fans still didn't exactly come out in droves). I'd say the same thing WRT concession pricing, but I actually think that's already pretty reasonable at CA (at least, compared to other places). From what paultzman has said in the past, we have no control over MSG concession prices, so I won't touch that. Now, I say this as an enabler to the problem, because I'm always going to go to the games, as long as I'm physically able to (and able to afford it, but the installment plan generally takes care of that). But, if it gets ugly, I can see a lot of ticket holders bailing out.

Also, if we don't have the money to pay a big buyout now for a coach, when are we ever going to have it? We drew at least 16,000 fans for all of our Big East games at MSG (I believe Paultz says we get 100% of the ticket money from that), we had 7 CA sellouts this year, and made the NCAA Tournament, which is extra money too (even though it was a cameo appearance). I understand we're paying Mullin, and that athletics as a whole has to see some of that money (the other sports at SJU would die out without men's basketball revenues), but that can't be all the money, can it? If it is, we're always going to be a Big East bottom feeder, except for maybe the occasional good season here or there.

Not true, that's not an unreasonable protection for Iona to have negotiated. What is at fault is SJU's legacy costs due to the poor decisions made in the past (Slice, etc.) that cause restraints on what the school, can spend now. And, someone still has to explain to me why CM is owed 2 years salary if in fact he resigned. THAT would be a ludicrous contract provision if that were in his deal (which I doubt since no lawyer would be that stupid to allow that kind of provision in an employment contract, no matter how much leverage or perceived leverage the hire had).

If I were Cluess at this point, I’d tell SJU to take a flying F if they come back to me if/when Moser turns down the job.
I made the same point on the Cluess thread, but then someone reminded me of the buyout.

$2-$3 million for a MAAC coach is an insane buyout. I don't care if he didn't have an agent--how could he could agree to that? If this doesn't shake out and the buyout was the issue, he has no one to blame but himself. Sorry.

Cluess' buyout is way out of whack with the norm for mid-major coaches. When Nate Oats extended his contract at Buffalo in 2018 --after beating Arizona in the first round of the NCAA Tourney--his buyout was set at $1 million, going down each year. That was reasonable, so Alabama paid it. In no universe is Cluess worth double to triple that.

Someone got hoodwinked and that someone is Cluess.

I'm not sure how a court would view the buyout if challenged. If a lawsuit was brought, evidence would bear that this is by far the most restrictive buyout clause among mid major college, and designed specifically to restrict the employee's movement in the marketplace. Courts usually tend to favor the employee in these cases. Make no mistake about this. Cluess is an employee of Iona College and this clause treats him unfairly, highly compensated or not. All SJU would have to do is tend him an offer waiting for his signature, and Cluess to retain an attorney who contacts the school with intent to bring suit. The school would never want this to go public, no less be brought to trial, and they would settle without trial.
It’s a mess and I feel bad for Cluess. I never would have expected this from a small Catholic university.

My opinion: If they wanted Cluess, they'd have him already, one way or another. Right now he's being kept on ice as option 2. Even if Moser doesn't come, Cluess may still be option 2.

Then, IMO, they should skip over option 1, and go straight to option 2.

I just don't see how they can feel that way, when you compare resumes. Those on here saying "I watched Moser's team during that run, they looked great", well of course they did. They were playing their best ball at the time. Nobody's as good as they look when they're playing great. I want to see the whole body of work, because holding things together when things are going bad (and keeping poor play to a minimum) are important factors in being a good coach. Nothing in Moser's past seems to indicate that he has an ability to do that.

Obviously in reality that would be stupid since other coaches wouldn't like that, but that's how disrespectful it is IMO. You coach at crap Loyola Chicago in a mid major league making less money and a Big East school offers you the job and you act like you can do better at Loyola? Is this really where we are? It should be an absolute honor to be offered a Big East job coming from his crap school.
I’m sure he doesn’t have to feel pressure from fans following a tourney year. They love him at Loyola. Our Babe Ruth didn’t get 5 years.
Only one school in the country fires coaches who make the tournament. Everyone without SJU blinders on looks at the school and shakes their head.
I dont have a problem with any of the coaches who were let go except for Fran, and he brought that on himself. I did have a problem with all of their replacements at the time they were hired, except for Jarvis. Like all of the other coaches. I’ll support whoever we hire...for a time.

Agreed Monte, and at that point you just give the job to St. Jean and hire Borman and Hsu and call it a day. Either that or you bring a guy like Scheyer in here and hope you catch lightning in bottle.

I’m thinking about this and wondering why in God’s name Moser would even want this job? He’s going to uproot his entire family and move them to one of the most expensive cities in the world to work in this circus atmosphere? He has to know that if he doesn’t meet with success in a relatively short period of time that the fan base and the media will be calling for his head. He will be placed under a huge microscope from the moment he arrives, especially since most of the fan base wouldn’t be happy with the hire. Regardless of our past failures, expectation will always be very high here. And this being the media capitol of the world, nothing gets overlooked. And it’s not like the shool is opening the vault for him, so not really getting how this move makes sense for him.

I want Scheyer if Moser says no which appears likely. Apparently Cluess can't happen. Apparently Pitino can't happen. Hurley wants to be irrelevant in the desert because the sun feels nice. I have really had my eyes opened at just how poorly our program is perceived by others during this process. Everyone is heading for the hills...even mid major coaches. Does anyone want millions while playing at MSG on national TV? Jesus man.

Feeling Moser declining quite possible

Mike Francesa said when you want to hire a coach it must be cleared by the NCAA. Does anyone know if Pitino would be if we called? If the answer is yes he would be able to be hired, we are looking at bum candidates instead of a HOF coach who is from the NYC area. You want to make a splash and shut everyone up making fun of us right now? You hire Rick Pitino. Screw the moral BS. It's time to win...bigly.

Sounds like it’s time to cut out losses and figure out a way to land Cluess or get another good candidate lined up somehow that wants to be here. This certainly hasn’t been pretty. Cluess’ contract I’m sure not helping.

This whole thing is an embarrassment. Starts from the top down. Need to cut the head off the snake.

High risk, high reward for Moser. He’s now had a taste of the fame that comes with making the NCAA Tourney and doing well, but is stuck in a conference that only gets one bid. He’s also gotten a nice little taste of NYC media spotlight, appearing this year as an analyst on the CBS Tourney broadcast.

I’m sure from a purely professional standpoint, he’d jump at the opportunity to coach in the Big East, play at MSG and he could probably handle the double-edged sword of the media spotlight. But the family/personal considerations have to be huge coming from the Midwest with 4 young kids.

Agree. It’s the main reason we aren’t getting better candidates imho.

It's about having a possible show cause penalty. These are put on coaches who leave or get fired from schools facing NCAA penalties. It stops coaches from escaping any responsibility while the new coach and players deal with the fallout. I think Bruce Pearl had one for 2 years. If a school wants to hire a coach under this penalty they need to abide by restrictions that will be placed on that coach. Pearl sat out his penalty period so when Auburn hired him he was already out from under it.

That would be egg in the face of Big Joey. Never wanted this Midwesterner so in long run it would be a positive, but no faith in these guys getting this right in a process that has been embarrassing.

#FreeAndGetCluess.

Probably fans should think twice from now on about complaining about coaches who bring us to NCAA tourney as last two have.;) ;)
On side note my son's CYO basketball coach last year guided them to the championship for 4th and 5th grade. Not sure he would leave for ST John's job but thought I would throw him out as a candidate.

Agreed, but we have as legitimate and respectable candidate in our own backyard who has won everywhere, wants to...….Go get him.
