Porter Moser

Not true, that's not an unreasonable protection for Iona to have negotiated. What is at fault is SJU's legacy costs due to the poor decisions made in the past (Slice, etc.) that cause restraints on what the school, can spend now. And, someone still has to explain to me why CM is owed 2 years salary if in fact he resigned. THAT would be a ludicrous contract provision if that were in his deal (which I doubt since no lawyer would be that stupid to allow that kind of provision in an employment contract, no matter how much leverage or perceived leverage the hire had).

I made the same point on the Cluess thread, but then someone reminded me of the buyout.

$2-$3 million for a MAAC coach is an insane buyout. I don't care if he didn't have an agent--how could he could agree to that? If this doesn't shake out and the buyout was the issue, he has no one to blame but himself. Sorry.
I wonder if Matt recruited Clayton Custer at Iowa State before he transferred to Loyola. That's who go them to the final four. Thank Ben Richardson for recruiting Custer, a lot of luck, and blame Hoiberg for being somewhere in this story.

Moser is a guy who caught lightning in a bottle at a mid major school. That's it.

Once again, our decision makers are getting duped.

If it’s the buy-out I sort of get it. That’s why I keep saying “all things being close to equal monetarily”. Have a hard time believing that they were prepared to shell out 3 Mil for Hurley(which would have been insane IMO) and can’t make the numbers work with Cluess. But then again so much of this is guesswork.

The money for Hurley's buyout apparently was coming from Repole, not the school.

Apparently, he was unwilling to shell out for Cluess.

A guy like Moser saying "ehh I don't know" to us should immediately result in us rescinding our offer. Obviously in reality that would be stupid since other coaches wouldn't like that, but that's how disrespectful it is IMO. You coach at crap Loyola Chicago in a mid major league making less money and a Big East school offers you the job and you act like you can do better at Loyola? Is this really where we are? It should be an absolute honor to be offered a Big East job coming from his crap school.
I’m sure he doesn’t have to feel pressure from fans following a tourney year. They love him at Loyola. Our Babe Ruth didn’t get 5 years.
Only one school in the country fires coaches who make the tournament. Everyone without SJU blinders on looks at the school and shakes their head.

At this point, the University should just make this an hour long game show special. Get full entertainment value out of it.

" [insert candidate name], you're the next contestant on the Coach is Right."

The candidate who comes closest to the budget available for the coaching position, without going over wins.

Decision makers gripping the bat too hard to come up with a candidate that will lead us to glory on a limited budget.

I'm not upset with losing Hurley, but this was like the Mets going after A-Rod. Not that Hurley is anywhere near comparable, but the Mets went in with an offer that was far below what it would take to get A-Rod. SJU did same with Hurley and it was far too easy for ASU to retain him.

Moser is NOT viewed as a high demand commodity by all schools looking to win. Was his name even mentioned for jobs at UCLA, Louisville, even Nebraska, or any of the big conference jobs that came up? St. John's just rummaging through the bargain bin trying to come up with a gold necklace. They have a rock solid choice under their noses if his track record means anything. Moser should stay put - he doesn't need to join Fraschilla, Mahoney, Jarvis, Lavin, Roberts, and now Mullin as a guy who will leave here without a serious coaching opportunity again in his career.

Did hear that it was his job if he wanted it. Seems to be the biggest hold up right now
Yesterday he was definitely the next coach, which is it ?
Lol..relax. He's the coach

Think Cragg is sorry that he came to St John's?
He's probably humming Anthony Newley's hit, "What Kind of Fool Am I?"

You can’t tell me this hire is about anything other then being cheap!! I don’t even want Cluess but I know he’s a hundred times better then Moser they just don’t want to pay the buyout on Cluess plain and simple. I wanted Pitino but knew that would never happen cause we haven’t operated like a big time program since Louie retired. However if your going the mid major route doesn’t it make sense to go with the better coach who’s right in your backyard, played basketball for the school , and really wants to coach here!

Why?

Put yourself in his shoes. You are a coach who wins and competes hard to win. You've climbed the ladder of your profession with your eye ALWAYS on coaching in the BE in the NY area. Now you are 60 and that dream job is offered to you and you are going to turn it down because you weren't their first choice? You are going to walk away from a chance to achieve your life's ambition out of spite? Seriously?

Its possible, but I doubt it. If that were the case he wouldn't want the job in the first place since we passed on him for Lavin AND Mullin.

If I were him I'd certainly use the leverage we've given him to get a better deal, but I'm not passing up what could be my one and only shot at coaching in an elite conference.

Don't disagree but I would not blame him discerning that under the circumstances he's better off staying put.

Or James Taylor's "Carolina in my mind"

I don't know how connected The Maven is to the program these days, but he tweeted that Moser will turn down the job, Cluess will take it and it will be announced at a Wednesday press conference.

I'd be shocked but very happy if that were to happen
Zagoria tweeted that several area coaches wished that SJU would consider Paul Hewitt
You can't make this crap up!!!

Cluess' buyout is way out of whack with the norm for mid-major coaches. When Nate Oats extended his contract at Buffalo in 2018 --after beating Arizona in the first round of the NCAA Tourney--his buyout was set at $1 million, going down each year. That was reasonable, so Alabama paid it. In no universe is Cluess worth double to triple that.

Someone got hoodwinked and that someone is Cluess.

That's one example, not sure it is representative. And that still doesn't excuse St. John's from handcuffing itself by all this wasted money on guys who don't have to show up. Or answer the why is CM entitled to the money questions.

When was the last time the school did anything that makes sense as it relates to the basketball program? If nothing else, they’re consistant.

I'm not sure how a court would view the buyout if challenged. If a lawsuit was brought, evidence would bear that this is by far the most restrictive buyout clause among mid major college, and designed specifically to restrict the employee's movement in the marketplace. Courts usually tend to favor the employee in these cases. Make no mistake about this. Cluess is an employee of Iona College and this clause treats him unfairly, highly compensated or not. All SJU would have to do is tend him an offer waiting for his signature, and Cluess to retain an attorney who contacts the school with intent to bring suit. The school would never want this to go public, no less be brought to trial, and they would settle without trial.
