Porter Moser

Having watched Iona play numerous times under Cleuss over the years always thought his teams played very little defense and were an undisciplined chuck and duck offensive team with an over reliance on the 3 ball. If they were hot could blow teams out, cold would get blown out. Saw where that got us the past 4 years. Only watched Porter Moser's Loyola team on it's run to the final 4. Thought they played tough defense and a precise structured offense where everyone seemed to know their role and adhered to it. People worried about his conference record should note the teams in the Mizzu Valley Conf where just about every team in it has been a more renowned basketball school than Loyola except for ancient history. For those minimizing his FINAL 4 run I have to laugh. So he has made a final 4 in his what 8 years at Loyola, that's Loyola while our storied program under iconic giants in the coaching profession like Buck Freeman, Joe Lapchick, Frank McGuire, and Lou Carnesecca have made exactly 2 final 4s in over 100 years. Cleuss wouldn't be a bad hire and would support him and the team 100% but would prefer Moser as I don't really care about local recruiting or what all the BS local coaches have to say. How long has it been since we attracted the local players, probably since FF under a different landscape.
Further have never been a fan of Oliva only because he has been involved in years of at best mediocre basketball but if true that he supports Moser I am happy. I do believe however it should be Cragg's call but maybe just maybe they each have their own candidate and are working as a team to figure out who is the best one. Maybe it is a close call for Cragg and tonight's reported dinner is to give Moser a chance to win Cragg over. Anywho I just hope to goodness we finally make a good choice and whoever it is does a great job and gives us fans something to be proud of and happy about. (Probably my longest post ever. That is all. Over and out. As Detective Colombo would say...just one more thing-should I have included Norm in my list of St. John's iconic coaching giants?;) :) )
Great post, Bama. I like both guys—but all else being equal—I prefer Moser.
Let’s hope for the best.
We shall see.
As Chicago stated - great post Bama!!!
I have one word if - as apparently will happen - Moser is hired:

HOORAY!!!!
onto recruiting and setting up a fine defensive team.
Go Storm.
:)

Simple question- if Moser is such a good x’s and o’s guy, or recruiter, or both, why hasn’t he won more?

Good coaches win wherever they go. He has not. Career under .500 record. Flamed out at Illinois St. If he didn’t have one flukey run, no one would have even considered him for this job.
Twitter comes to Redmen.com Everyone gave even Norm a chance. Crapping on a coach before he even gets here. He was at the DePaul of his conference and finished first the last two years. Did you watch how his teams played during the final 4 run? Product on the floor looked a lot better than what I have seen Cluess put out on the court. But if it's Cluess will be totally behind our new coach.
I'm not crapping on him. I hope at 50 years old he turns in to something that he's never consistently been, and that's a winning coach. I don't care about his offensive sets, his defense schemes, his hard work, or any of that incidental BS. I care about his record. And his record, with a large enough sample size, tells me he's a .500 coach and that he's not all of a sudden going to become a .700 coach when he gets here. It sort of reminds of the Yankees in the 80s whenever they'd go out and get career .500 pitchers(Andy Hawkins, Ed Whitson, etc) and the delusional fan base would think that once those guys got here they'd all of a sudden become Cy Young winners, You are what your record says you are. Moser record is very very mediocre at best. Until he proves otherwise, I'll expect more of the same here. Oh and let me know if you want all the season tix next year, this hire(if it happens) is enough for me to give up mine.
COME on Monte - get over it - you will NOT give up your tix - you are a SJU fan for life - like most of the rest of us - like it or not
Go Storm
and if Moser is the man - GO Moser!!!
all the best

Anatomy of a St. John’s rumor:

Insider: I can’t tell you who it is but we have a successful midwestern coach coming in for an interview on Monday.
St. John’s fan: Bill self! John Belein! Glory days!
Insider: No, no. We can’t even come close to affording them. Think someone at a catholic school. Someone who was an assistant for a legend. And no not wojo.
St. John’s fan: Mike brey is coming on Monday!!!!

I think the insider who knew about porter moser should perhaps consider someone else to spill the beans to next time!

I wasn’t big on Moser when he was first mentioned here a few days ago, but my buddy who is a head coach in the A-10 and knows him well from coaching circles told me today that Moser is a “great guy and a great coach.” I’d still rather have Cluess with his N.Y. ties and history, but that at least makes me feel about Moser.
Its good to hear that from a contemporary.
However Norm was a great guy too.
And it looks like Moser can coach. I'm just worried that the NYC basketball landscape could eat him alive.

The staff would need ONE I repeat ONE NYC basketball guy who unites all. Who is that guy? I don't think its fair a new coach would have to occupy two spots just to appease the needy NYC basketball community. But if there is one guy who is widely accepted by all then by all means he should be on this staff no questions asked. That would alleviate a lot of my fears.
Bring back Slice.

Ok, I kid, I kid. But you are right. The construction of the staff will be paramount. Ben Howland was a west coast guy, but made the move to Pittsburgh, and hired a certain local guy to his staff, to hit the streets running and make contacts.

And Howland was a bit if an unknown as well. We heard of him because his Northern Arizona team nearly beat SJU in the first round of the NCAA tourney. He has been around, and is now at Missippi State.

Moser, like Howland, preaches defense. And defense travels well, all around the country. If the money saved from the Cluess buyout helps bring in a solid staff, I think this will work out. At least we will not have to worry whether or not our coach enjoys coaching.

No Soho, No California.. just gyms. I'll take it !!!! :)

Mike Krzyzewski's record at Duke - early years - some wanted him fired etc.because he could not COACH and could not RECRUIT
1980-81 17-13
1981-82 10-17
1982-83 11-17
end of discussion
no one knows what will transpire
how about we just chill and give the man a chance

all the best

Screw it. I could buy into the negative vibe (and was starting to) because that has been our M.O. for most of the last 15 years, but life is too short. If our next coach is Moser then welcome and kick some *&$$ing a&&. Good luck coach.

Mike Zaun wrote: If Moser comes and we get some real good recruiters then maybe we have a chance. If he can truly coach like some say as well as develop, get him the kids to coach up. We need lots of high 3 stars with the occasional 4 star HS recruit or transfer. Anyone know if he uses bigs? Or are his offenses mostly guard based chuck and pray? I am glad to hear he seems to emphasize defense more than Cluess.

Mike, their offense last year and final four year revolved to some degree around a traditional big man Cameron Krutwig (6'9", 255) with very nice low post moves. He was only real big man but was a big part of their offense (2nd leading scorer).

This is a good hire imo. Moser is a fundamentally sound HC who teaches kids on both sides of the ball. His offense keys on spacing and moving the ball and his defense is intense but is not prone to excessive fouls, which means he emphasizes fundamental body/hip positioning. He's also works very hard, is hands-on in recruiting, and is a gregarious, impressive guy.
I liked Cluess but like this hire more, because Moser is a complete coach. And his philosophy is more in sync with this Board than the wide-open run 'n gun approach that Tim coaches.
Yes, there are risks. Can he win over the NY Metro HS/AAU scene? Yes, with hard work, personality, and a great NY Metro-linked AC.
His coaching record is indeed a bifurcated mish-mash, but recent history of the past 5 years, in which he posted a 119-64 .630--winning %-age and 2 1st place finishes the past 2 years, is a far better metric to evaluate the guy than his earlier record at Illinois State or the first 3 years at Loyola, where he had to rebuild the team.
The key is recruiting. Can he recruit in the NY Metro, and/or be able to tap the Chicago scene as a pipeline, as well as nationally?
I think he'll work hard and assemble a competent and hard-working Staff.
If he accepts, we'll have a genuine indefatigable x&o HC for the first time since early-Jarvis and Fraschilla.
Let's give the guy time to prove it. Two years.
We shall see.

Not a done deal. Moser is a lifelong Midwest guy, with 4 school age kids, living in a nice affluent suburb in Chicago. SJU is potentially a high reward situation for him, but high risk as well on the personal front.

Yeah, sounds like he wants a raise to stay put.
Sounds like he may not want the job.
I was thinking this last evening but didn't want to say it. Everything was kept so close to the vest until the job offer. Very easy for something to spook him about taking his job.

Can't blame him. But that would leave us in a lurch and not looking good at all. How long will Tim Cluess be willing to hang out there (if we are willing to pay his buy out in the first place)?
