Our recruiting for next year

I'm assuming it's a guard-type as that is the way I took Marillac's comments to insinuate.

At the end of this signing period, we will look back wondering why we ever doubted Coach. He will deliver.

+1
Nobody has ever questioned Lavin's recruiting ability until now.
Most of you think the ship is sinking, but Lavin is issuing a different kind of S.O.S. I'll go on record saying we land Sampson, Obekpa, and Sanchez/Shepard.

The funny thing about the spring is that once that coaching carousel starts spinning, there is top talent available that nobody ever expected. NOBODY will have more room than us, and nobody can offer the PT at the four and five like us. Lavin will cherry pick just like he did with Jamal Branch.

Sure hope you're right Marillac(and have no reason to doubt what you're saying)-a threesome of SOS would be excellent. Sanchez or Sheppard would be fine though personally I would prefer Sheppard as I would love to continue a Findley Prep pipeline. Would like to get the Jr.PG from Findley as well-but for now would be extremely happy with the 3 or 4 mentioned above for this coming signing period.

"Couldn't be turned off by Lavin adding another recruit this week?" is the line Marillac used. I'm going to go out on a limb, and this is purely a guess, but based on Marillac's recent comments, I'm going to guess Davon Marshall, guard out of Monroe CC which would put us in good stead with Sanchez. Purely a guess though.

But also remember any "commit" right now can only be verbal. Not permanent until April with a signed LOI.

My gut feeling tells me Sampson will be the next commit. The fact that Gathers signed w Baylor may not be as bad as it seems. Sampson would be competing w Gathers for PT there. At SJU he will get plenty of PT. He has a great relationship w Lavin and our players. The original commitment of Gathers may have had something to do w Sampsons decommit.

Interesting MCN.. do you know much about Marshall? I know it's speculation but I don't think I have seen much on the board about him.

I certainly hope it's Jakarr. I like him every bit as much as Gathers. I just suspect it's a guard based on the comments. Fwiw, Marillac said hes certain Jakarr will be here so take it fwiw.

Don't know too much. 6ft tall, shoots 49% from 3 and 45% from field. Supposedly a lights-out shooter, combo guard. Also would help us with Sanchez I assume. It's just a guess, but apparently the kid is a hell of a shooter//corer, even if undersized and Marillac loves him and has mentioned him more than once this week.

And we certainly could use a shooter and backup guard. Sounds good to me.

davon marshall would be a great additon!! the kid is a flat out scorer, i know this may be a bold statement but he reminds me of a slightly smaller dwight hardy!! the kid would be a great fit with harrison, shoots it well from anywhere on the court plus he is tough as hell!!

Marillac says we'll be landing somebody this week. We certainly can use some commits...

Especially "big" commits

Would love it to be Sampson or Opekpa

You guys are on another planet. I always visit this board and never usually post, but the fact that so many of you think we're going to land Sampson is ludicrous. I hope I'm worng and that I eat my words, but I don't think there's any way in hell any good recruit would go to SJU right now.

Boo -

I'm 100% with you, all we have had is people leaving the program, outside of Branch, we have had nothing but recruits de-commit, players transfer/quit team, a coach who isn't on the court and a team that has 6 bodies on it. No kid in their right mind is going to commit here, Lavin's cancer has hit this program harder than anyone ever could have imagined, and the damage won't stop until he is back to health on the sidelines recruiting.

I think it's safe to say we have almost lost all of the momentum we gained with our class last year, and our NCAA trip last year.

This is the lowest point the program has been since the Norm years, its still a far-cry from how depressed we were back then, but there is a dark cloud over the program currently.

What's goin on at #stjbb!!!???

i think the whole good cop bad cop thing with lav and dunlop is the missing element!! dunlop is a very cold man that has difficulty dealing with kids.....i think without lavin being able to raise the kids spirits is killing us right now!
dunlop is really hurting the program if you ask me!

Hearing Providence is in excellent shape with 2012 F Jakarr Sampson. Would be another tremendous addition to Ed Cooley's monster class!

This is turning ugly..If Harkless leaves its back to the dark ages

Does anyone know what is going on? This is becoming a joke. While I don't think Harkless will leave (or should leave), and I think Branch will be a good player, I think we can be an OK team next year. But something has to be going on. Losing a recruit to Providence???? Are you kidding me??? How bad does our situation have to be that JS would go to Providence, a veteran team our freshmen smoked. They don't have enough talent to really become a great team like we do and they play in Rhode Island. This all blows my mind. Then again, I wouldn't want to play for Dunlap either.

this is getting very Ugly -

the answer is to get Lavin back on the sideline before we are screwed.

Imagine if Harkless goes pro and we have a transfer...... this is becoming a joke. Every time i hop on redmen.com either another player has left the program, or a recruit has spurned us.

Has Lavin had more fluctuation on the roster than Norm did in his 6 years?

To be fair, Lavin is starting from scratch. I expected a couple of guys to possibly leave or not make it. That is part of building your program. Keeping everyone happy going into this year was going to be a challenge. Has anybody really been in the position he has? Filling out an entire roster? But now it's getting a little alarming. He'll straighten it out I'm sure, but it does seem like a wrong turn was made.

This has turned into the exact opposite of last year, when the team was winning and highly ranked recruit after recruit was falling in line, and everyone was optimistic about our future. This year, it's been just one bad thing after another: Lavin's cancer, the Big East coming apart, ineligibles & decommits, recruits opting for elsewhere, Lavin still missing on the sidelines, rumors, and on and on ...

One thing's for sure: Lavin didn't come here to lose or be mediocre and flounder in the lower half of the conference, and -- and I hate to say this, but right now what I'm seeing and reading and hearing really has me way down -- my biggest concern (my fear, in fact ) is if he fails to sign the talent he thinks he'll need to win next year, he might just walk away from it all, which would be catastrophic for the program. Over the top perhaps, but again, that's how low I'm feeling right now. Just hoping we get some good news real soon. (Guess my negative karma rating loses a few more points with this one.)

Good for Sean, he wants to know whats going on. Steve oughta get back to him pronto. I wanted to know that same thing when my buds pulled me out of MSG at the half. Score, Marq.38 SJU 10. What happened Sean? I'm surprised, him and Dunlap being friends and all.
