Orlando Sanchez

http://zagsblog.com/st-johns/st-johns-sanchez-says-hell-play-overseas-if-not-cleared/

"If Sanchez were given an extra year, or even if he remained on campus to pursue his education, the Johnnies would be at their full capacity of 13 scholarship players and theoretically could not add a Rysheed Jordan unless someone left the program or perhaps became a walk-on. The 6-4 Jordan is considering St. John’s, TEmple and UCLA and will decide in April."

With this quote from Zagoria im confused, does that then meant that Amir can become a walk on since the rumor is that the reds are paying for his tuition? can someone clear this up?

So if Orlando is cleared quickly, do you put him in the lineup at this late stage of the season and hope for a BE tournament run and NCAA bid or do you keep him on the sidelines and load up for next season?

There is no way were talking this year. It would burn any eligibility if granted. And I dont think they would be like play him next yr plus now if you want since we were such jerks :)

This is a ploy for next year thats it. Fingers crossed it works.

Sampson/ Obepka/ Sanchez is some front line for next seasin if all cards fall into place.

Don't forget God's Gift, he'll be a nice backup. Shouldn't be outrebounded next year.

No, but will still be consistently outcoached[/quote

I don't get this. In this staffs first year they took a group of seniors that had never won; beat a few top 25 teams and made the NCAA's for the first time in I can't remember how long. Now this same staff can't coach? Was Dunlap the only one on the staff who could coach? Maybe, just maybe it has to do with the players and where they are in terms of their developement.

If a player is recruited (ie actively following them at events, they take an official visit where expenses are paid) then they cannot become a walk on. Also something where because he's getting paid for another sport he has to count against schollie count otherwise there would be schools using this advantage or something.

Not trying to boot anyone off of the team, but I see it as a strong possibility that someone transfers. There's a few players who I can't see getting minutes in the future if they aren't now, and will eventually be recruited over.

The player would have to pay their own way. A bit easier to do at a state institution than St. John's.

Aren't Hooper and Amir both in a position financially to do so---if they so chose?

At around 50k per year in total tuition and expenses (food, rent etc.) it would not be fair to ask anyone to do that no matter their situation.

Was it ever clarified if Hooper is eligible for walk-on status with his tuition funded otherwise, academic scholarship for Harvard transfer or personal means? It was mentioned a few months ago that whether recruiting visits were official or unofficial was a key factor.

The question should be is Hooper on a basketball ship now. If so, he was recruited to play basketball.
The other question is who was recruited to play basketball but no longer will fit into the equation.
My money is on the second question.

If we can get Sanchez cleared for next year, I really think it will be a huge shot in the arm for us. HUGE.

Truly don't know how this works. Jamal White on scholly as reward for devotion and effort as a walk-on when Lavin had schoolies left over. Not recruited for hoops. Can he go back to walk on status?

Looking at roster below, we can run, pound, or shoot and with a little attitude just might make a deep run in 2014.

Sanchez
Sampson
Pointer
Branch
Harrison

Obekpa
Bourgault
Garrett
Greene
Jordan

Jones
Gift
Balamou

Hooper

I'm pretty sure you can be a walk-on even if you were recruited as a scholarship player only if you pay the full price of tuition out of your own pocket (Meaning no financial aid). You never see it done at private schools because the full price of tuition is simply too expensive, and especially not in a major city like NY because the cost of living, which is included in the scholarship, is absurd. Amir got a million dollars as a signing bonus but he wouldn't be wise to blow 100k of it to play his last 2 years because if he doesn't get to the majors he will need that money saved. Hooper I know is loaded but why would his dad agree to paying 150k for the last 3 years of his eligibility when he doesn't have to. No matter how much you have 150k is a lot of cash.

White was awarded a scholarship last year but is back to a walk on this year and a Sr so gone after this year.

Anyone agreeing to pay his own way would only be for one year, not three. They could return to scholarship status next year. I know it wouldn't be fair to ask anyone to do it. Just throwing out the possibility.

Jamal white was on scholy last year. Hes not this year. Does that mean he was recruited to play basketball?

I knew that, wasnt sure if 72 did.

So Hooper would be a possibility (Harvard transfer on academic scholarship) if his campus visits were unofficial?
