Orlando Sanchez

He says we won't have any scholarships next year. We have 12 scholarships right now, not including Orlando (meaning Orlando would be the 13th for next year).

If Rysheed committed here and Orlando was ruled eligible, I'd have no problem telling Amir to put on that Reds uniform ;)
I have a problem with what you are saying. Amir is a kid who stayed loyal to us after not being cleared initially. Came to school last December and played hard for us and now you are saying you would have no problem telling him to go, SMH. People are always talking about loyalty on this board and why players renege on their commitments but you have no problem telling a young man who has expressed a desire to stay at St Johns and get his degree, "sorry fella we got someone better so get lost".I can't believe that you had the audacity to even post something like that.

Many of the posters on this site have a love affair with the NCAA and seemingly believe that it is a fair and just organization. IMO the NCAA is a self serving corrupt organization that is more interested in blocking for the "old boys" than protecting the rights and interests of the student athletes.

If anyone has followed the Miami investigation by the NCAA, the NCAAs investigation of Muhammad, or the "investigation" of no show classes at UNC understands the failings of this entity.

The good news is that the role of the MCAA has begun to lessen with the emergence of the BCS and the consolidation of super conferences.

There is no reason whatsoever why Mr. Sanchez should be prevented from playing college basketball simply because he appeared at the end of a national team game for less than 4 minutes.

if i had a guess, i'd say orlando doesn't sign an agent...then goes to they myriad of nba tryouts so pro teams see where he stands.

he had great coaching at st john's. maybe it's time to think about making some money.

Garrett over Jones...c'mon! Garrett is a warrior and Jones is a ballerina.

If they can get Orlando next year, and Sampson stays, they are automatically top 15/boderline top 10 nationally next year, IMO. Has the potential to be a very exciting season.

Absolutely not. Talent doesn't always mean instant success. Do you know how hard it is to be a top 15 or top 10 team? Cincy basically had to go undefeated for a long stretch to open the season to be #14. I think we would be maybe a #23-#25 team if it worked out.

Was it ever clarified if Hooper can be on a non-BB scholarship and would that render moot the need of some on this board to write about members of the STJ team as though they were slices of meat being exchanged at the butcher shop?

Whoaaa! Unless, I'm misreading the latest information on Sanchez, there's no guarantee that the NCAA will reverse its decision and yet here we are saying get rid of Amir, or take back some other guy's scholarship, projecting next year's starting five, etc. We were all pumped up at the start of this season that a favorable decision on his eligibility would be coming, and look how that turned out. Yes, this news gives us hope about Sanchez joining the team next year -- which would be a huge plus, especially given the loss of Lawrence -- but unless I'm missing something, it's far, far from guaranteed and I'm not eager to set myself up for another big letdown at this time.

Agree. At least we have some hope.

Just pisses me off to no end how so many thugs are passed through while the NCAA turns away, yet here is a genuinely good kid with a 3.0+ GPA, lost both parents, been through hell and back and all he wants is a chance.

Sorry Newsie but new rule for early entry is you have to declare by the deadline which is before all camps and pro days. Even if you don't sign with an agent you lose your eligibility the moment you declare. No more turning back between declaration and the draft

At least we can rest assured knowing we are doing all we can to get the kid to play. We have one of the best in the business on our side representing us.

what if he assumed he wasnt going to get drafted. Can he not declare for the draft and simply try out for teams after the draft and pick the camp he wants to go to and decide then if he want to come back to school if he somehow gains eligibility ? Is that even possible ?
