Orlando Sanchez

Honestly, this looks good for us. With the amount of backlash and turmoil the NCAA is going through right now, this could be just the type of story that forces their hand to declare him eligible for next season.

A kid from another country who probably spoke very limited English went to play for his national team after his parents died and he gets ruled ineligible for stepping onto a court for not even 4 minutes gets a year of his college eligibility taken away? This is no Enes Kanter situation. He is a student athlete that is trying to get his education in America, regardless of how old he is. The NCAA had no problems with American-born Weeden and other athletes who are older.

No way Orlando isn't cleared for next year. The NCAA will have so much heat on them for this type of mess.

Kudos to SJU for getting Shabazz Muhammad's attorney on the case. And also the New York Times for such a well written article. We wanted public outcry for this and we got it.

I fully expect to see Primo wearing his #33 jersey for us next year!

No free tattoos, no free benz, no agent kickbacks. Just strapping the name of his home country that he is proud to represent on his jersey.

I know - and yet somehow Reggie Bush, et al, receive massive illegal off-the-book benefits and they get to play before they get caught.

You know what is complete bullsh*t about this saga? It is that the kid still loses even if he declared eligible for next season. Athletes have very short careers. The clowns at the NCAA just wasted a year of his income earning potential. What a joke.

Well, that's why attorneys had to get involved.
Point is, he violated one of their bylaws.

But no way will this kind of nonsense hold water. The NCAA is in so much turmoil right now over their shenanigans. So for a story like Orlando's to hit the NY Times, they're going to have to cave in. The kid wasn't receiving improper benefits. That is the NCAA's main sticking point when ruling kids ineligible.

Let this story gain some legs in the next few days/weeks. They'll cave in. One of the stupidest decisions I've heard made and I'd say that even if it wasn't a SJU player.

Michael Carter-Williams stole from a store, got arrested and the NCAA didn't even get involved.

This won't stick.

Yes, I agree with what you are saying. But why even jerk the kid around in the first place? They just wasted a whole year of this kids playing career - and all because some manager at the NCAA didn't have the brains to think clearly about this situation. The NCAA seems to be such an antiquated byzantine system. It really needs a make-over.

You're right, but a great part of this story is that he hasn't given up on this dream. He clearly wants to play here, as evidenced by him attending each game and apparently continuing with his education. Great to see a kid take a stand for his education and college BB vs. running for the money (which may we know may be a real option for him in the NBA based on past reports). Being an eternal optimist, I love that we have some hope with Orlando once again. If he clears for next year, how can you not give this kid standing O every time he steps on the court. Here's to hoping he can convince the NCAA to see the light. He really deserves this for what he's been through with his family and what he's endured this season.

Meanwhile Derrick Rose paid someone to take the SAT for him. Gets to play with Memphis, goes to the title game, and drafted by the Bulls. Now a superstar in the NBA.

But having both parents die growing up in a totally different country without knowingly violating any laws, and the NCAA says "too bad kid!"? They should be ashamed.

You are right - he will be everyone's #1 fan next year - by a mile.

Wow, it came out after the fact that Rose had someone take his SAT for him?

This was known a while ago. It got pushed under the rug and he went to the NBA. The SAT could have been the difference in being able to play at Memphis at all, but apparently it's not a big deal to the NCAA in that scenario. A bunch of Alamaba football players robbed a kid off campus (an Alabama fan no less) and beat him senseless. They have been suspended but not kicked off the team. There are so many other instances where athletes get off free for much worse. This is a TRUE student athlete trying to better himself, take care of his family (or what's left of it), and live a dream. No wrongful intent at all. I don't understand why you guys think he will be eligible next year now because it's getting hype...the NCAA will not change for us.

For those who don't know here is the Derrick Rose scandal:http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/03/23/derrick-roses-sat-scores-_0_n_510309.html

He says we won't have any scholarships next year. We have 12 scholarships right now, not including Orlando (meaning Orlando would be the 13th for next year).

If Rysheed committed here and Orlando was ruled eligible, I'd have no problem telling Amir to put on that Reds uniform ;)

It would be a pretty complete team, wouldn't it? Sigh......a basketball fan can dream... and it's just within our reaches!

We'd have: Shooters, a defensive post presence, offensive post presence, a guard that can to the rim at will, streaky shooting guard, effective mid-range small forward, suitable combo-guard & wing-players, defensive stopper... some upper class-men, returning conference rookie of the year..
sheesh... we'd be exactly where we would want to be...

We are getting miles ahead of things here... However, Orr wouldn't attach himself to this if he couldn't win

If that were to play out, you'd be saying so long to Gift, not AG

I still think no way Sanchez comes next year, but if he does can you imagine? Sanchez, Sampson, Harrison, Branch, Jordan (?), Hooper, Marco, Pointer, Obekpa, etc. Sanchez is that big post presence and long body defensively we need so badly. Obekpa/Sampson/Sanchez is a shot blocking machine.

That is in a perfect world where nobody transfers or goes pro. Skeptical as to how CJ feels. Would be surprised if he stuck around.

Who cares about CJ if we can have Sampson/Obekpa/Gift/Sanchez?

Thats the point. That is why i am not too concerned with the scholarship situation.

If they can get Orlando next year, and Sampson stays, they are automatically top 15/boderline top 10 nationally next year, IMO. Has the potential to be a very exciting season.
