Orlando Sanchez

I was told that USC's top target is a former UCLA assistant/current head coach who has earned accolades for tearing it up on the recruiting trail.

Mark Gottfried???

I was hoping people would panic more with my description, but yes, that is who I was told USC wants.

Sorry, I should have let you have more fun with that before I threw out Gottfried!

Thanks for passing that along

Makes perfect sense as he is doing a great job.

Money Talks and BS walks... sorry for the cliche but its true and everyone knows it.

IMO, Lavin is in for a great pay day here that no one will be able to match, and he knows it. If we make the tourney this year, and keep getting big time recruits the alumni donations will keep rolling in, I for one am not worried and think we are in a great position with Lavin, the staff, and the direction basketball program.

Don't worry, just donate!

Alumni donations will KEEP rolling in? What donations? Vitamin water millionare from SJU are one in a mill.
I hope we get one but doubt it.
We don't receive major donations! We can't even sell out 1 game

Thats the problem, that everyone thinks they have to be a billionaire to be a donor, if we can get most people to realize that donating just something we would be in a lot better shape. Unfortunately most people think like you and are waiting for someone else to hit it big and ride of that.
Yes, a vitamin water type guy is needed at every school, but everyone putting their part is a bigger day to day help.

How do you think big time schools get there, because they have many many alumni that donate constantly without being millionaires. if you donate $20 a month, thats $240 a year, have several thousand alumni that do that and it all adds up.

we also have more notable alumni than just him.

If it makes you feel better, I took the bait. Not full on panic, but was ready for a long off-season of concern.

Continues to inspire in practices. Maybe he should sue the NCAA to show cause. I am sure the NCAA will not want to disclose how it really rules on players' lives in public!

Perhaps he will.

If everything is legit regarding his paperwork, I would seriously consider legal action to move this along. Just no way should it take this long
to reach a conclusion. He is not applying for a job with the CIA. Jeez!

It's just really puzzling that he's still practicing and sitting on the bench with the team. If he's not eligible, or won't be at this point, why does he remain with the team?

I'm sure there are other posters who can offer more nuanced analysis; but the options you're talking about for Sanchez are very limited. The NCAA isn't a state actor, and so he isn't even entitled to an initial hearing, let alone an appeal, or a timely decision thereof. All the concepts we would equate to basic "fairness" don't apply to NCAA decisions.

Why is the poor kid still here? For his sake I want him to go pro overseas or in the NBA to start making money and getting playing time. It's just a tease at this point having him stay here without being able to use him. The NCAA completely booted this one.

How did the NCAA boot this? From everything that's out there it sounds like he was ruled ineligible in November because he played semi-pro ball in Spain. St Johns has been trying to change the decision ever since, basically arguing extenuating circumstances (both his parents had passed away etc etc).
How's it the NCAAs fault that no means no?

The NCAA has a ridiculous amount of faults, I just don't see how this is one of them.

Because they left Sanchez in purgatory. They may have said he was ineligible in November, but from what I understand they haven't put the hammer down and said "No. Stop trying to appeal because it's over. There is zero chance he can play". Evidence of that fact is that he is still with the team. What would the point of that be if he really was told "no" flat out? It looks like they say no, then they look at other paperwork..so what's the deal? They should just say yes or no at this point once and for all.

Does anyone have an issue with the school not being upfront about him allegedly being declared not eligible in November? Is the school permitted to release such information?
I find it unusual that, if he was actually declared ineligible in November, we receive notes from the sports information department on upcoming games etc, wherein they simply state that Sanchez "awaits an eligibility ruling from the NCAA". If they are permitted to disclose the information, and he in fact was declared ineligible in Nov., they should just say so and what they are doing about it.

I know someone who is about to start tutoring athletes at SJ, so maybe I can get the inside scoop on some of these things in the future...or just see Jakarr Sampson write an essay about Spongebob :)

You are correct! Much of what the NCAA eligibilty committee does is cloaked in secrecy and schools and conferences with political NCAA lobbyists get things resolved rather quickly. SJ is partially to blame here but when some schools are running their programs like an NBA team and with all the perks of NBA players -minus the salary- the playing field becomes uneven.
Most folks now see the futility of many of the NCAA rules and all of a sudden paying stipends is being tossed around, etc.
As for Sanchez, if he was denied unfairly to showcase his talent and it cost him the opportunity at an NBA paycheck, who is to say he did not suffer financial damage.

speaking of secrecy. why is it that no mention has been made in the newspapers specifically Rubin and Robbins of the Sanchez fiasco let alone the mistake on Gift with regard to redshirting. You would think after the Georgetown game since both referenced us being outmuscled and out rebounded that might open the door to them mentioning both issues?
