Orlando Sanchez

Earlier in this thread I has asked the question of what Orlando did between the ages of 18 and 22. The answers were a bit vague. I did some research on line and found that he had played in Spain in at least parts of 2008 and 2009. I had no idea whether or not he was compensated. I found no history of High School ball anywhere. There wasn't much information on line about him, which in and of itself was enough to raise my suspicions. And I ain't the NCAA. That's part of the reason why I wasn't buying in to the whole NCAA vendetta conspiracy theory. Knowing what we know now, clearly this kid came with some huge eligibility question marks. More than we ever suspected. .

Somehow - and I know they are two very different cases - this saga bothers me less than the Nurideen drama from last year. We sort of rolled the dice on Sanchez probably knowing going in there was a less than 50:50 chance of him qualifying.

the time and effort the coaching staff put into recruiting Sanchez rather than putting that effort in on another, knowing at best Sanchez was 50/50 can not sit well with everyone.

Yea, but what were our other options? There wasn't exactly a load of big men available last year.
And the other guys we followed aren't exactly lighting it up
Phil Nolan is playing like 8 mins a game for Uconn, 1pt and 1reb
Andrew Young the juco from CA, he's at Texas AM- plays 13 mins, 3pts, and 3reb
Jordan Dickerson is at SMU and is getting less than 1pt and 1reb a game.
Blaise Mbourga the big kid from NJ was supposedly going to SMU but hasn't played.

There is a reasonable argument that our best course of action was taking a chance on Orlando.
I don't know if I agree with it, but it's not obvious that recruiting someone else instead was the easy call.

Seriously, it's not like they walked anybody because they were recruiting Orlando. They still had other ships until they signed Christian Jones on July 1st.

Very true. Sanchez would have been just what the doctor ordered too...it's a shame.

excellent points. +1

I don't get why so many in a uproar over Sanchez recruitment. It took Coach too classes to get us a roster full of players with more on the way. We got a bunch of underclassmen 4-3 in the BE, and it looks like they might be getting better on the way to being good.

To my mind, the worst part about this was not taking the chance on him, but redshirting GG on the flyer that Sanchez might be able to play. That was not a rational decision.

Or....in Lavin we trust, recruiting is complicated and occasionally when you have ambitions to compete at the highest levels of D1 hoops like SJU does, this stuff happens

I don't get the stink being made over the Sanchez recruitment. It took coach 2 years and we have a roster full of players with more on the way.

I agree Im not mad at taking a chance on Sanchez. What bothers me is calling it a classification issue and the redshirting of Gift.

RS, we don't really know what went on between Gift and coach to arrive at the decision that was made. I do believe that Gift has a chance to be part of something special next year that was not as likely to happen this year. Whatta ya think?

I'm in the minority.. maybe even the only one who thinks this... but I think Gift is playing somewhere else next year.
It'll be very interesting to see what happens with GG, and if he plays what is role is.

While true, other than "re-recruiting" and "re-signing" Jakarr and signing Chris Obekpa late, last year almost turned into a rather below average recruiting class for the coaches and Lavin especially, who basically recruited "full time".
Both those players signed late in the Spring signing period. Going after Sanchez was a "must" IMO but the big JC loss was Cleanthony Early who was a local player. Better than Gift and Sanchez but somehow ended up at Wichit St.
With either Early or Sanchez, this would have been an NCAA tourney team ......... But hey, Orlando may be declared eligible in time for the Big East tourney......he, and we, have nothing to lose. LOL!

Do you think that will be a basketball or academic decision on Gifts part?

Anything here that we don't offer that he'd be interested in?

I have no inside info and am just giving my opinion. I dont think Gift wanted the to redshirt. I think he would have helped us this year. If we have a slight lead at the end of the game ,Lavin cant play CO because his FT shooting stinks. Gift is another big body who would provide depth and might be able to match up well w an opponents big, and I feel comfortable w him at the FT line. This team may be a bubble team and Gifts presense might have made the difference. If we get Lawrence I think Gift will get minimal burn.. But there are no sure things in life and maybe we dont get Lawrence or Sampson goes pro, then maybe Lavins decision will pay off.

.....or Lavin's agent will quietly mention his name to whomever will listen to get him a lucrative extension at SJ, a bigger payday at USC or Lavin and Miss Mary decide that Superstorm Sandy and the blackout of lower Manhattan was the last straw and want to move back to the left coast with a promise to recruit certain players like little Cartwright and a few uncommitted 2014's.
Then Lavinwood would truly have meaning.
