Orlando Sanchez

r.i.p to this thread please its over. on another note ive been having trouble putting up picture on the site anyone else having this issue.

As has been suggested a zillion times, if this (or any) thread has run its course for you; don't click on it.
my opinion sorry it bothers you but oh well

Yes it is your opinion, but your opinion could very easily be wrong.

I dont' understand how SJU gets a pass here. This is the second year in a row that the SJU staff has not been properly prepared for a season due to their misunderstanding of the eligibility of their players. Make no mistake about it, other NCAA basketball schools were hesitant during their recruiting of Sanchez due to his potential eligibility issues. This happened last season will Pelle, Garrett & Sampson as well. The staff needs to do a better job of looking into the history and resume of each of its recruits (on and off the court) in connection with NCAA guidelines.

I am by no means saying that it is fair what the NCAA is doing to this young man, but the adults running the SJU program are not cleared of blame either due to the impact on the 2012-13 team. It seems to me that the SJU men's basketball team could use some improvement their office with a heightened dedication to eligibility issues.

I'm not saying that it wasn't worth a shot recruiting or signing Sanchez, but they should have known that there was (at worst) a 50% probability that Sanchez wouldn't have played the majority of games this season. Obviously they didn't properly grasp that, or Gift would not have been red shirted. If Gift was playing this season, I'd suspect they'd have at least 1 extra win this year based on additional rebounding capabilities. And, as we all know, one or two wins could prove to be the difference to a post-season invitation (of any kind).

at this point, i agree the person responsible for this and last year's fiascos should be asked to make other arrangements.

I have no issues with coach or staff they are after the best talent it was worth a shot and they shouldnot let this make them non aggressors Ad far a gift was concerned think it was a good idea to red shirt him Perhaps when he returns he will be a better players sincehe had more time to work on his skills What he showed was at best he would have been 6th 7th p[layer off th bench He was not competeing with the bigger forward or centers Perhaps another yr he will

its the price you pay when you recruit these type of players. its been more prevelent here because Lav had to recruit so many players at once, there was bound to be some bumps in the road. Lav and his staff cant be held totally liable, these things are sometimes investigated by detectives or investigators from the NCAA for months. Im sure they did whatever due dilligence they could not to have this happen. Look at the kid from Zona, Lav backed off him for that reason, and where is he now? Norvel Pelle was and still is just a mess, Lav was misled. Go easy on the criticism boys or else we will be back with a very conservative recuiting group,ie: Norm Roberts......In my book, i completely trust coach Lav....IN LAV WE TRUST !!!! be happy fellas, this program is on the rise!!

Does that include Lavin?

Yep

I'm not happy with outcomes of some of the recruits the past two seasons, but I accept that we had to take a few chances if we wanted some quicker-fix solutions. It's like a football team two touchdowns behind having to abandon the run and throw some risky passes downfield.

If this pattern of recruiting continued, I'd be concerned, but I'll give the staff a pass on Sanchez. By all accounts, he's a good kid and good student who fell on the wrong side of one of the NCAA's many grey areas.

We're in better shape now and should be able to land top-level talent with fewer gambles.

Interesting football analogy. Some teams get behind and opt to go over the middle with safer plays rather than long shot deep balls. In our case we always seem to shoot the moon rather than settling for less heralded recruits leaving us without a fallback position. That's how we wound up with six players last year. I've always thought we would have been better off settling for a few second tier players with upsides rather than leaving unmanned positions. There have been a lot of success stories recently where teams went pretty far without stacks of blue chippers. That's how some coaches make their bones and I think it's a really good part of the sport. The fallback position thing has been one of my biggest reservations about our program. When we wind up losing to teams with less highly ranked kids we would have ignored it's bothersome. I know Steve is in this for an NC but there's more than one way to skin a cat. Lou had 18 visits to the NCAAs using seconds when needed to build his teams. I want to win it all as much as anyone but you have to make the dance to have a chance.

I have criticized Lavin for various things, this is not oneof them. We are not UCLA. To get the kind of athlete he wants you are going to have to take chances. Some, like this one don't work out.

I promised myself at about page 95 that I'd stop checking this thread, but of course I'm a proud reader and occasionally replier on this great site so that wasn't happening. I'm not one for conspiracies either, but here in Indianapolis (home of the NCAA) I have heard tell that Ohio State has a "friend" in the NCAA that until the tattoo saga could just about reduce anything (see the 2006 investigation into OSU, which led to among other "penalties" the 98 basketball team losing the final four banner - that should have been ours - but not losing scholarships and or post season games which allowed them to still land Oden and Conley and get to the finals in 2007. I also met a guy in 2009 who thought Lavin was dirty and we'd be watched, which would have been harmless if he wasn't gainfully employed by the NCAA. Again I'm not into conspiracies but just because your paranoid it doesn't mean your wrong.

Of course if someone can rationally explain to me why Majerus couldn't buy a pizza to eat with his player who's family member died, but Wheeden was allowed to play football or Sanchez can't play but the currently employed Garrett can, well you are much more competent to understand the NCAA. Of course, crazy understands crazy

There was no issue with Weeden. He could be as old as Bobre it doesn't matter. The only issue with Sanchez's age is it tipped them off to wonder why such an older foreign kid was coming around now.

Orlando is still practicing with the team so there is no reason to end this thread.

So if he is still practicing with the team guess he still has a shot

I think the Spring Semester started today. Let's see what his status is as a "student" before we worry about whether he is practicing. Maybe Lavin will make him a "student manager" like he did Malik Stith and then to disappear without a word.

Of course it's your opinion; whose else would it be? And again, don't open it, make believe it doesn't exist. I get tired of threads but I am not so arrogant as to think I should tell other people when to stop discussing something. I don't like some posters but I am not so arrogant as to tell them not to post, I ignore their posts. So your comment per se doesn't bother me, but it smacks of arrogance and yes, I don't like that. Your second comment smacks of arrogance even more so I just found another poster I will ignore, not that that should bother someone superior enough to tell other people when to stop a discussion
wow you need to Check your bloodpressure asap. its not thats serious. my opinion still stands and at no time did i tell anyone not to open a thread i said to get over it. but anyway i wont respond anymore its pointless.

I don't fault the staff for recruiting Sanchez. You just have to weigh the risks versus the reward. Apparently they thought they had enough muscle down low with Sampson and Obkepa, that it was worth taking a chance on Orlando.
Reasonable people could disagree.

Also, we're not the only team that does this. If Kentucky has Enes Kanter they probably win a national championship two years ago.

Only took people 3 months.

No way around it......we did one crappy job of vetting this player! His status in Spain should have been crystal, the compensation issue should/could have been checked. Lazy and less than qualified compliance officers did not help Lavin's cause in this case.
