Orlando Sanchez

I agree Im not mad at taking a chance on Sanchez. What bothers me is calling it a classification issue and the redshirting of Gift.
RS, we don't really know what went on between Gift and coach to arrive at the decision that was made. I do believe that Gift has a chance to be part of something special next year that was not as likely to happen this year. Whatta ya think?
I have no inside info and am just giving my opinion. I dont think Gift wanted the to redshirt. I think he would have helped us this year. If we have a slight lead at the end of the game ,Lavin cant play CO because his FT shooting stinks. Gift is another big body who would provide depth and might be able to match up well w an opponents big, and I feel comfortable w him at the FT line. This team may be a bubble team and Gifts presense might have made the difference. If we get Lawrence I think Gift will get minimal burn.. But there are no sure things in life and maybe we dont get Lawrence or Sampson goes pro, then maybe Lavins decision will pay off.

.....or Lavin's agent will quietly mention his name to whomever will listen to get him a lucrative extension at SJ, a bigger payday at USC or Lavin and Miss Mary decide that Superstorm Sandy and the blackout of lower Manhattan was the last straw and want to move back to the left coast with a promise to recruit certain players like little Cartwright and a few uncommitted 2014's.
Then Lavinwood would truly have meaning.

A little harsh ?

Rich, I'm a dope. I really thought , after all I have heard about college coaches being dirt bags, that coach Steve would not make this decision involving a top student athlete like Gift without a sit down and a lets talk it over. If he just told Gift he had to sit it out, and Gift could get the classes elsewhere, why wouldn't he leave? I just didn't see it going down that way.

Well, maybe just a little but while we are throwing all the possibilities out there...maybe getting Lawrence, maybe Sampson and or Harrison turn pro, maybe Gift plays, maybe he is pissed and transfers to Niagara, yada, yada .....maybe Lavin "transfers" back home for hardship reasons..........then again, unlike our crackerjack compliance staff, I am doing due diligence and see that no fewer than 4 of the top 30 players in the class of 2014 are from Cali and 5 of the top 30 have USC on their list, including little Carwright, and we at SJ are not really involved with anyone in the top 30, etc., etc., etc.
Now, you tell me, is it out of the realm of possibilities or am I being "harsh"?

Actually now just paranoid..let me guess some handsome guy with the gift of gab and slicked back hair stole your prom date 40 years ago, can't imagine how else you would develop this stinging distrust of coach after 2 and 1/2 years...

1) I don't see USC hiring UCLA's leftovers. And that's how it would play in LA.
2) Not sure coach would want to play second fiddle to UCLA in the city, and Lane Kiffin and the football team on his own campus.

Bottom line, if we can pay coach as much as our competitors then I don't see him leaving.
But if USC could offer him double what he makes here, say 2+ million per year, then yea he might leave, and I wouldn't blame him.

But I don't see a huge demand for Steve Lavin right now, and the SJU athletic department is set to bring in a lot more cash once this new league signs its tv deal with fox.
I'm not worried.

By your response Shecky, you seem to be the one who is paranoid as the possibility just naws at you such that you would suggest you stole my date 40 years ago. A stinging distrust?? I threw it out there like some of you armchair bloggers throw spaghetti against the wall .... Just to see if it will stick.
Hey, I trusted Franny and I trusted the bronze dome but they obviously did not return my trust.
Both were going to be here forever.
Lesson to the wise....sports attorneys (agents) and their clients (athletes and coaches) are some of the least trustworthy of individuals.
Nothing would surprise me.....especially after Lavin's jab at the fair weather St. John's fans and the New York media in his interview after the Rutgers game.

I didn't hear the jab so tough for me to comment. But thinking it may just be Lavin trying to motivate the fans and work the media. He's a savvy guy as we know. As for his making the move to USC, I certainly wouldn't put it out of the realm of possibility, but there's no doubt in my mind that Lavin (and the Mrs.) are enamored with NY. And that Lavin's ego is not going to let him jump ship without 1st accomplishing something here. Let's face it, the perception of many is that he failed at the UCLA job. If he were to leave us now, he'd be perceived as having failed here too. I think he's got to much to prove to himself and the critics, and there's no bigger stage to prove it than the NY stage.

I thought Lavin's comment was a bit of a touché and pretty funny. He let people know he's paying attention and no doubt wants to prove people wrong. 72's comments certainly harsh, but I understand his point. I don't think Lavin will take off and do those things. he was cast out of LA unceremoniously. I thought pretty harshly considering having a real good record of success at ucla. A record any SJU fan would she loved.

Fortunately or unfortunately for him, Lavin's coaching legacy will be built by building a long-term success at a school like SJU, not stepping stones. He'll make little headway out in LA because nobody cares about bball there except at UCLA and we know how that went. These reasons, coupled with the fact that Lavin and his wife love NYC are the reasons I think he's in it for at least a 10 year haul unless he decides on broadcasting or another direction.

It is easy to paint broad strokes and label all types as a certain way, but really unfair to do so. Proof will be in what Lavin does here.

Some of you old coots get your depends all twisted at speculation unless they are the ones speculating.
I listed the scenario "out there" with USC recruiting, They are involved with 5 of the top 30 players in the class of 2014. Four are from California. We are involved with none. That is not imagination, it is available for you to Google, as I did!
I listed a compendium of all of your collective "wild imaginations" such as Sampson leaving, Harrison leaving, Greene transferring, Amir leaving to play pro baseball, Gift unhappy and transferring, Sanchez this and Sanchez that.......and I am the one thinking the "sky is falling" ?? LMAO!!
When this "Sanchez " thread was started back in the 2011-12 season.......yes it seems like just yesterday...the mere suggestion that he would never be cleared at the ripe old age of 24, would have brought similar castigation about using ones "imagination".
Two writers have already mentioned Lavin's name with the USC job so it is not MY imagination skippy! I just report the news.
As for Lav and Mary being ticked pink about NYC, that is your speculation. All I know is she has not gotten one acting job here and has had to commute to the west coast for jigs.
As for USC, I will wait for Austour to weigh in on how he spoke with Cartwrights' parents and how they would send their little water bug to USC if Lavin was hired, etc., etc.

Then Lavinwood would truly have meaning.

A little harsh ?

Nothing is out of the realm of possibilities but why always think the sky is going to fall? What indication other than your imagination exists?

First olf all, you can take old coots, depends and skippy and shove them all up the same place you use for your thinking. I have never mentioned Lavin anf his wife's feelings about anything because, unlike you, I only talk about things I know something about. But hey, two writers actually mentioned Lavin's name with USC; well, shut my mouth, I guess that makes it so. As for Sanchez, anyone with half a brain knew his eligibility was a potential problem but I understand that would not fit your agenda and besides I guess no "writers" mentioned it so how could you possibly know!!

Are the two writers college kid bloggers?
Maybe its the laundry list names that are always shown when vacancies are out there.

But there are no sure things in life and maybe we dont get Lawrence or Sampson goes pro, then maybe Lavins decision will pay off.

.

Actually now just paranoid..let me guess some handsome guy with the gift of gab and slicked back hair stole your prom date 40 years ago, can't imagine how else you would develop this stinging distrust of coach after 2 and 1/2 years...

"Lesson to the wise....sports attorneys (agents) and their clients (athletes and coaches) are some of the least trustworthy of individuals."

Should we add in college presidents to this list?
As far as Franny staying here, that would have been great but SJU had other ideas and did not believe in him when he looked at ASU for leverage in getting a raise and long term deal. Franny and Lavin are both great recruiters and that is the MOST important thing in college coaching.

Money Talks and BS walks... sorry for the cliche but its true and everyone knows it.

With St. John's now being part of the "C7" and looking at the largest college basketball TV deal (500mm for 12 years) Where each school will earn 4.5mm+/- a year vs. the 1.4mm+/- they earn now, I am sure Lavin and staff will get a nice raise.

From what I recall Lavin is currently earning slightly under 2mm per year, that is great for a D1 college basketball coach. Last time Harrington spoke in regards to the new league he stated that if more money needs to be allocated to the basketball program to garner a better tv deal, then they are ready to do that. Which I know is all Lavin's doing as when he was hired one of his first interviews he spoke in regards to improving the facilities, and revamping the program.

IMO, Lavin is in for a great pay day here that no one will be able to match, and he knows it. If we make the tourney this year, and keep getting big time recruits the alumni donations will keep rolling in, I for one am not worried and think we are in a great position with Lavin, the staff, and the direction basketball program.

Don't worry, just donate!

Agenda??? This is a "forum" ! Everyone here has opinions. Just because someone writes something you do not agree with does not mean "they" have an agenda.
Wahoos like you drove a 22 year old kid off the board because he was bitching too much. The greatest writer on the Board is boycotting and rather watch granny porn. Why? Because without emoticons, winkles and other visuals, you take everything literal!
BTW, if you only talked about "things you know about" you would have a handful of posts but I suggest most of what you write are opinions on others thoughts or musings ...... Maybe even other sports bloggers stories. Nothing wrong with that.........just do not come on here so high and mighty and expect me to think your 500+ posts were only based on knowledge and not opinion.
Now...back to this never ending saga about Orlando Sanchez!

I was told that USC's top target is a former UCLA assistant/current head coach who has earned accolades for tearing it up on the recruiting trail.

Alumni donations will KEEP rolling in? What donations? Vitamin water millionare from SJU are one in a mill.
I hope we get one but doubt it.
We don't receive major donations! We can't even sell out 1 game
