Orlando Sanchez

Just watched this game on line. Thank You Moose for posting the link.  Here are some observations and impressions:

First both Sanchez and Bourgault started for Monroe. Monroe played Indian Hills CC where Dwight Hardy played before he played at St. John's. Indian Hills is ranked 7th nationally. Monroe is ranked 3rd. Monroe took the lead early and held on throughout. Indian Hills made a run midway through the second half to get within a point but that was it. Monroe's leading scorer was Davon Marshall who put up up over 30 points. Marshall is a 5' 9" guard who committed to Liberty. Monroe won the game by about twelve points. Final score was 82-70 I think.

Sanchez: Very athletic can play above the rim and runs the floor well. He had about twelve rebounds and eighteen points also blocked a couple of shots. Displayed excellent skills and really understands how to play. He can handle the ball and play on the perimeter and was very good in the open court but will likely play the 4 or 5 if he comes here. He has touch on his shot and displayed a mid range game. He also passed the ball well and seemed to have a good understanding of a team concept. Lastly he made both of his free throws.

Bourgault: Played most of the game. Did not have a big stat line. Shot 1 for 5 or around there. Made his first shot an open three that was nothing but net. His game is that of the classic three. He moves well without the ball and displayed excellent court vision. Passes really well. Had a couple of nice assists. Reminds me of a cross between Fred Lyson and Sergio Luyk for those who go back that far. He is a blender and a chemistry guy not a high flyer but seems to have an ability to knock down an open J. Will mostly play without the ball in his hands. Not a super athlete but never seemed intimidated by anything during this game.

Per Eric Bossi....

@rgsaunders1 @tflanny23 Tweeted earlier, lots of St. John's talk circulating the arena for Sanchez.

I can't remember who it was, but I think the last time we heard something about chatter in an arena, we got the guy.

.
Thanks for the breakdown

He has a bad back and beautiful hair? :p

Reminds you of Fred Lyson and Sergio Luyk? Don't find that very comforting (especially the Fred Lyson part).

Fred used to warm up before Oceanside's games by repeatedly draining shots from halfcourt. I'm not saying he would have been a huge star, but a bad back robbed him of what should have been a decent career.

Let me elaborate. Bourgault reminded me of the style of those two players. They both played the three, were about 6' 6" played mostly without the ball in their hands, moved well without the ball, were spot up shooters from three and their primary purpose was to be complimentary players. I believe many good teams have role players like this on their roster.

Bourgault may have more talent, quickness and upside than either of those two players mentioned, but his role from what I could see today highlighted his complimentary skill set. Currently our roster has a void of spot up shooters at the three. Pointer and Garrett are stud athletes and bring many things to the table but adding a situational shooter to the roster is not a bad thing. Additionally Bourgault seemed to be an excellent passer and that is always valuable within the team concept.

Orlando is a good player. Not a difference maker, but would be a good role player. I'm not sure you want that from a JC. He plays at Monroe college in Bronx, so he is easy to check out.

From what I saw he's better than a role player. Role player suggests he isn't well rounded and would be used in limited capacity. This kid is big, athletic càn rebound and score.

Hey, Brady Heslip isn't the most athletic guy in the world either. Neither was Jason Kapono. There are roles for smart players and good shooters on every team. Like I said, just look at Baylor.

The more I hear about him, the more I like. I ll feel better when he formally commits.

Would love for Sanchez to commit ASAP, would be great to have for two years.
I have no trouble with coach bringing in a JC or two each season.

He seemed to display a pretty, good floor game. Whether, it's scoring, rebounding, passing and having a knack to make a solid play. We're talking about a 6'8" or 6'9" mobile kid. He's definitely a guy that I'd like to see the staff wrap up.
